Brigitta and Brendan are self-proclaimed transit nerds with public transit playing a strong supporting role in each of their lives. From childhood, when they learned to ride transit, to taking them to and from dates as they grew older. It’s no surprise that their first kiss took place on the platform of Commercial–Broadway Station as they waited for their trains. As their relationship blossomed, Brigitta knew it was time – she was ready to propose to Brendan! What

better location to pop the question than on transit! The couple hopped aboard SkyTrain to Waterfront for dinner in Gastown.

As dinner ended, they received an “emergency phone call” to help a friend at the foot of Lonsdale in North Vancouver. They rushed to Waterfront Station and crossed the Burrard Inlet on the SeaBus. After getting off the SeaBus, Brigitta led Brendan onto the neighbouring pier overlooking the harbour, its bustling boats and glimmering city lights. It was there she asked him to marry her.

What Brigitta didn't know, was that Brendan had already suspected that this night might not have been just any ordinary night. Anticipating an impending proposal, Brendan, a few hours earlier, travelled via bus throughout the city to make, print and box his tiny response. When Brigitta handed him a ring, Brendan responded with his folded square paper creation adorned with the word “YES!❤”. But a yes just wasn’t enough. His paper folded out revealing 10 squares, each with another reason why he wanted to marry Brigitta.

The newly engaged couple returned to the SeaBus, taking photos to share their joy with the world, and their other transit-loving friends. They capped the night off with a trip on Canada Line to finish celebrating their new engagement by travelling on all modes of transit.

From all of us at The Buzzer, we wish you a lifetime of love and happiness and many more transit journeys to come!

The date was September 25, 2009. The time was 2:39 a.m. Michael was heading home after a night out in downtown Vancouver. The N19 pulled up, and Michael piled on with the rest of the late-night crew. The bus was packed and everyone was feeling chatty after a night on the town. Michael joined a conversation with a few people he didn’t know — one of whom was Crystal, a woman who would later become his wife.

It was a long ride to Surrey with people getting off, seemingly at every single stop. But, Michael didn’t mind – he was having a great conversation.

Michael’s car was parked near Scott Road, so as the bus crossed

the Fraser, he knew he had to do something. He mustered the courage to ask Crystal if she was single, and they exchanged numbers.

It was early the next morning when Michael's phone rang. He looked at his phone in disbelief – it was Crystal. “Do you want to go out for Vietnamese food?” she asked.

Michael and Crystal had a great time talking a lot about transit. Despite Michael working at TransLink, it turned out Crystal was quite the transit enthusiast herself having logged years of transit, commuting between Surrey and Vancouver.

Michael and Crystal dated for a few years and after many adventures on planes, trains, buses and automobiles, Michael was ready to pop the question. They flew down to Los Angeles, took a few rides on the LA Metro and got engaged with the Hollywood sign in the backdrop. Naturally, a transit-themed wedding was in their future. They were married in 2016, complete with a wayfinding map-inspired seating chart and bus-shaped table numbers.

And the rest is (transit) history…
