    WHEN DEVOTION RAINS!

Vast stretches of dried-up crops, stunted castor and millets, this once a naturally endowedfertile village in Ranga Reddy District was presenting such a drastic picture which was a contrast

to its past glory. With the situation turning worse, men women and children, have started migrating for work.

This situation was similar in almost all the Villages in Telangana, Rayalaseema areas. Thedrought situation was grim and unparalleled. It was unusual in the Kharif season. It was thethird consecutive year that the state was facing a severe drought and in several areas the cropshad withered away. Most of the water sources including tanks and bore wells had dried up.Women were forced to walk four to five kilometers for fetching drinking water. A large number ofpeople were migrating in search of work. Cattle were dying without fodder. Power supply waspoor. It would be difficult to enlist the sufferings of the people further.

In the Vedas from Taittiriya Samhita 2nd Kanda, it is mentioned about one long verse thatif recited with devotion in waist deep water, it could bring bountiful of rains.

Yes, this mantra was named as Varuna Mantram and the recitation was capable of attractingrains. "Marutamasi Marutam......"

We decided to start the Japam on July 16th and complete 108 times standing in the waistdeep water of Osman Sagar Lake, which was adjacent to the Temple.

16th July will be the start of Varuna Japam at Chilkur said the press release in one of theleading dailies, in Hyderabad. The grace of the lord was such that it started drizzling at on theday of commencing the Japam itself.

Why cant they do this in every temple for the benefit of mankind? If I am not wrong, thisis the only Temple where such a Japam is being done in this trying times. said the PhotoJournalist who had come to cover the event.

In the sankalpam (Invocation) the ritwiks had prayed for filling of all the tanks, rivers and

all water bodies. They had prayed that if the rains fail the humanity will suffer and hence therewould be no yagams, festivals etc.

The devotion, the dedication and concern for the sufferings of the society were clearly visiblein the group of pundits who were reciting the Mantras. The environment was responding to thedevoted chanting. The sun was shining brightly. When the recitation started after the punditswalked into the lake, people who had seen would believe; the clouds started forming on thelake and it poured heavily and continuously. Even the illiterate villagers of the tiny hamlet weretouched by the dedication of the archakas.

Today if such a special puja has to be performed, the commercial angle always takes the preference. The devotion and concern for the well-being of humanity which will result by performing suchJapams gets sidelined. With the result, the Veda Pundits also have become commercial. Thepower of such recitations by them, which would be in return for some monetary benefit, gets

diluted and the benefits are not as has been evident at Chilkur. This dedication and concerncannot be achieved by paying any amount of money in return. The grace of the Lord was immediatelyfelt as everytime the Pujaris stood in the Lake, it rained.

The archakas words have come true. Ever since the japam was started, the State has beenexperiencing incessant rains.

Till the time this article was getting ready for print, we have information that all the Tanks areslowly filling to their full capacity and the Power situation may be better with less blackoutsand the Government may be having a peaceful smile. It is the grace of lord Balaji at Chilkurand Varuna Japam for the believers.

    VERITABLE VICTORY

    Sri V.S. Karunakaran, Chennai

    Anecdotes on Vishnu Sahasranama -149

During the days of their childhood, the three sonsof Kunthi and the twins of Madri had the fortune ofvisit to the Ashram of their parents by eminent sageslike Bhrugu. When Bhrugu visited their Ashram,Kunthi made her children prostate before the saintlypersonality. When child Arjuna knelt at the feetof Bhrugu, Bhrugu told Kunthi that her son will bethe star among the sixty.Kunthi said with all respect, " May I know whatthe great sagemeans by this?"He said, Sage Veda Vyasa is coming here shortly;he will explain to you what exactly I had meant."

After a few days, Veda Vyasa called on them. Kunthinarrated to him about the visit of Bhrugu and askedhim what the blessing of the sage meant. Vyasaheard her and exclaimed "Star among of the sixty?"He thought for a while and then he smiled at Kunthi. He said, Can you tell me the name of the sixtyyears?Kunthi said Why not? She went ahead Prabhava,Vibhavha, Sukla, Pramodoota .. Veda Vysa interrupted Please narrate them bycounting with your fingers like One Prabhava TwoVibhavha three Sukla and list the names in their

serial order.Kunthi went on counting the names with her fingers. She said, "...Twenty Six: Nandana Twenty Seven:Vijaya.Stop says Veda Vyasa and added, Twenty sevenis the number that is connected with stars as thereare mainly twenty stars mentioned in Vedas. Theyear Vijaya is the name of the twenty seventh amongthe sixty. Bhrugus blessing that your youngest sonwill shine with that name means this child will bepopular by the name Vijaya as he will be the VeritableVictory. What does exactly the word Vijaya mean when itrefers to a Year? asked PanduVeda Vyasa said this name is given to the yearamong the sixty that represent the Kala Swaroopaof Lord Narayana "The Time". Narayana is VeritableVictory. Hence a division of Kala Swaroopa of theLord is also called by that name. I have also includedthis name Vijaya as one hundred and forty ninthin my collection of thousand names of the Lord whichwill be narrated to your sons by your uncle Bheeshmaand made public at the appropriate time to be decidedby the Lord.

You may now ask why the Lord is called by thename Vijaya. The Lord is called Vijaya becauseHe is the embodiment of Victory and thus veritableVictory. That means unconquered or unconquerableby any force. We know the trinity of deities Brahma,Vishnu and Siva. Lord Vishnu himself created bothSiva and Brahma to carry on the creation anddestruction under His guidance. But as it happensthe two deities who were created and given theassignment gradually felt that they were doing itwith their own power and this made them some-what haughty.

People also thought that Lord Vishnu is also onemore deity just like Brahma or Siva. Talks that allthe three are equal or all the three are the samesingle force in different forms started doing their rounds.Sages once met at the bank of Saraswathy anddiscussed this. The Supreme force among the threethat guides and leads the other two should be madepublic. Someone has to interact with the deitiesand show to the world beyond doubts who amongthe three is the leader and so is the veritable victoryfor no other force can challenge the best amongthe three.

They chose Bhrugu to undertake the assignmentfor he alone had the spiritual power to undertakesuch an assignment. He went to Satya Loka, the abode of Brahma thedeity of creation who happened to be his father inthe sense that he had created Bhrugu. When Bhruguwas to enter the chamber of the Brahma in SatyaLoka, he was stopped by the door keeper sayingthat Saraswathy and Brahma were resting in privacyand it was not proper for him to enter Brahmaschamber. But Bhrugu did not care for them. Brahmawas furious and was about to slap Bhrugu.Bhrugu said You have reached a great position but

are not able behave in the manner that matchesyour position. Hence there wont be many templeson the planet of earth for your worship. He then went to Kailas the abode of Siva. ThereNandi prevented him from entering the personalchamber of Parameshwara. Parameshwara is dancingwith Parvathy doing rehearsal for the ensuing Aarudrafunction to be held at Kailas in which all sagesincluding you are going to participate. You aretherefore not to disturb them now.

He tried to stop Bhrugu. But Bhrugu gatecrashedinviting the wrath of Paramasiva who went to theextent of trying to insert his Trisula in the chest ofBhrugu. Parvathy intervened and said, Bhrugu isa sage and your brother. You are trying to kill him

giving him a punishment highly disproportionate tothe mistake of his in gatecrashing into your privatechamber. Do you want to commit one morebrahmahatya and wander carrying his skull like youdid after plucking the fifth head of your father Brahma?Bhrugu smiled at this and told Siva You have beengiven the position of destroying the world and preparingit for a fresh cycle so that the world gets purifiedbut I find you have not purified yourself. Worshipfor you will be only in a symbolic form the Lingaintemples It is said that because of this curse Lord Shiva isworshipped only in the form of Linga in theSanctumsanctorums of temples and not in his ownform in the frame of a statue.Bhrugu then went to Kaarya Vaikunta which issupposed to be a replica of Vaikunta Loka in theBrahmanda. It is the branch of the absolute Vaikuntalike the temples of Venkateswara in the TTD centersin various cities in the country where a replica ofthe temple of Tirumala and the deity at Tirumalagive darshan for the devotees not able to go toTirumala. Super human beings like Bhrugu can visitthis Kaarya Vaikunta at their will. The absolute Anode of Lord, the actual Vaikunta

is inaccessible to the souls till they get liberatedfrom the bonds of Punyas and paapas. Those whoreach the Absolute Vaikunta led in a specified routedescribed as Archiraadi in Vedas will not return tothis world. When Bhrugu entered Kaarya Vaikunta none of thedoor keepers stopped him. He could directly getinto the chamber where Lord Narayana was restingin Adi Sesha with Maha Lakshmi caressing His feet.Bhrugu went and kicked Lord Vishnu on His chest.Lord woke up and came to the sage pleading guiltyfor not having received him properly. He requested

Lakshmi to bring hot water and massaged the feetof Bhrugu telling the soft flowery feet of the sagewould have been affected by getting in touch withthe rough chest of His made bumpy and dumpy bythe various missiles thrown on that by Asuras inthe wars between Asuras and Devas.Bhrugu decided Lord Vishnu is the embodimentof victory because He has even won over His ownself in that He is not prone to anger the greatestenemy putting all beings in danger has behaved ina royal manner. His behavior was matching to the

exalted position and hence He alone is embodimentof victory.Because the Lord is like this He is called by thename Vijaya said Veda Vyasa. He then addedKunthi! by the blessing of Bhrugu who proved Lord

Vishnu is Vijaya your son also will be always victoriesin wars and even in wars with his own self. He willnot be conquered by lust and will be known asVijaya. How true was the blessing of Bhrugu and Veda Vyasa!Even the beauty of Urvasi could not tempt Arjunawhen he was a guest of honour in the palace ofIndra. When Arjuna had annihilated the Nivatakavachasthe enemies of Heaven after he was blessed withPaasupatha by Parameshwara He was received withhonour by Indra. When the celestial damsels wereintroduced to him, Arjuna showed his eagernessto meet Urvasi. It was in his minds that she wasthe mother of his dynasty by virtue of her havingbeen the wife of his ancestor King Puru. But Indraunderstood otherwise. He thought Arjuna was eagerto have the company of the celestial damsel whowas ever the sweet seventeen. He advised her togo to the chamber of Arjuna. She dressed up withsuch stuff that would tempt even the most saintlyones and reached his chamber with dreams of thecompany with a great Mr. World! But when sheentered his apartment She was shocked at Arjunacalling her as his grand- grand - grandmother! She could not believe that there could be a human

being that would not be led to lust at her sight andprostrate before her like a son would do before hismother! This victory of Arjuna over his own-self made himVijaya and he was chosen by the Lord to be Hisstudent to get initiated in Geetha!Arjuna became Vijaya only because of a trace ofthe Grace of the Lord who is the absolute Vijaya!Nirukti sums up thebasis for the Lord being called

    Vijaya thus:-

u\z \ToyDear Readers of VAK, those of us who chant thisname meditating the form of Lord Balaji at Chilkurwill be Victories even on our own selves and avertthe danger that follows anger.Recently my classmate in Engineering College ShriM. Mohan had forwarded to me an E mail which

    reads as follows:-

Anger is dangerousRemember that the word Danger has anger!!Dr. Rajendra Prasad was the President of Indiafrom 1950 - 1962.

During his presidency, he had an attendantcalled Govind.

Govind was honest and efficient, and lookedafter the needs of the President very well.

One day, as Govind was tidying Rajendra Prasads

desk, a pen fell out of a file. When he picked the pen up, he noticed thatits tip was broken.

Just at that moment, Rajendra Prasad enteredthe room and saw what had happened.

He got very upset, because it was an expensivepen and was a gift from a close friend.

He was so angry with Govind that heimmediately dismissed him from his job.

Govind was devastated and begged forforgiveness.

But Rajendra Prasad was firm and orderedGovind to leave at once.

That night, when Rajendra Prasad went to bedhe suddenly remembered the unhappy event.

He then started thinking about it.

What was Govinds mistake? he asked himself.

The pen was damaged because I left it in thefile without its cap on.

    Surely, Govind is innocent.

Moreover, he is obedient, sincere, honest andloving. Oh! I was harsh and unjust to him thismorning. These thoughts of regret and repentance

disturbed Rajendra Prasad so much that he couldnot sleep all night.

As soon as he woke up the next morning, hesent for Govind.

He took Govinds hands into his own and said,Govind, you should forgive me, I was very harshto you yesterday.

Please resume working here, I cannot affordto lose you. Govind was moved by these wordsand thanked Rajendra Prasad, as he resumed

    working for his beloved employer.

Thereafter, Rajendra Prasad would often narratethis incident to others and caution them to thinktwice before losing their temper.

Anger is like a dangerous dog, he would say.You must keep it properly chained.

Otherwise, it will bark at everyone and mayeven bite an innocent man!

    Moral:

How often do we come across situations likethese, where we are quick to get angry at othersor others get angry at us, only to realise laterthat it was not totally the other persons fault!

How nice it would be if, even in such situations,we could think calmly and take action withoutgetting angry.

Anger is a deep rooted impression in ones mind, and the only way to overcome it is by developing

a stronger impression of love and purity in us,so that it is this pure impression, instead of thatof anger that guides us.

A pure impression in our mind can be developedby repeating (chanting) the Name of God, whois the purest and most loving of all.

I thought this email is relevant to this anecdoteand have reproduced here with gratitude to ShriMohan my dear class Mate!

Incidentally this name is appearing in the anecdotesof Vishnu Sahasranama during the Tamil year called

    Vijaya.

Perhaps it is a coincident proof of His will that thisarticle appearing in the year of Vijaya explainingthe name Vijaya of His is to make all of us victoriousin all our affairs including the affair of control ofAnger that comes with Danger despite our havingreached positions.

    Let us chant

    Madhura Vijayam - 22

Based on 14 century incidents famous writer Sri Venugopalanwrote this story. In this story the hero is utsav idol of Lord

Ranganatha of Srirangam. During the invasion ofMohammed- bin-Tuglak Lord Ranganatha was takenprotectively outside of Srirangam facing several difficulties.Lord Ranganatha escaped from being taken away by theenemy soldiers..... This story was presented in part-I nowwe are presenting part-II name of MadhuraVijayam....Vallabha and Dutta decided to change their courseto save the captured lady from the hands of her captivators. The trader chief approaches the friends fast with raisedsword to test their valor. After a playful and serious dualhe hands over a message from the young lady kidnappedin the carriage addressed to the youngsters seeking helpand left them alone with an open offer to join him in hisjourney.. . Gopanna also got convinced and startedthinking. Meanwhile Raja Vallabha and kaladuttareached Pookulathanallur and there they got to knowfrom the choultry Head that Makaravizhiyal was broughtthere by some soldiers and she was not well..... LaterDatta fell ill with high fever and he was taken to thesame hospital where one of the soldiers of the teamwhich captured Makara Vizhiyaal was alsorecuperating... (Read further).

That girl is none other than his Makaravizhiyaal. Not having the fortune of being seen by her washighly disappointing to Vallabha. There was a newpain in him when he kept thinking about this event.Such a pain was not experienced by him before. He was totally in a gloomy mood that whole day.

Whenever Rajavallabha goes to the roof top of thehouse for basking in the sun the deva dasi SukrutaRatna becomes watchful. She informed him aboutsoldiers searching for him throughout the town.People who can only use lathi sticks have nowbecome army commanders. The whole country hasbeen destroyed. When will this country go toprosperity? lamented SukruthaRatna.Truly the whole town has been under the grip ofsome fear. Those soldiers have created such fearacross the town. But no one knows what is thatfear and what is the cause of that fear. Some peoplesaid they are decoits and not soldiers ofSambuvaraya. Some people felt they were justkidnappers of having kidnapped a lady. The wholeof Poongulathunallur was under the grip of fear. That fear was lasting only till that night. Next daythere was news all over that the soldiers have leftthe town and every where there was a sign of relieffrom people. The days of rain have not stopped. There was onlya small break for 2 days. The third day the rainlashed. The whole lake was running full and lookinglike a sea. Water was gushing with great soothingsound. There was a small mantapa next to thelake side. It was a 16 pillar mandapam with some

half finished sculptures in the pillars. The mandapamwas offering shelter to people going in that route. The travellers used to stay there and enjoy thescenic beauty of the lake and the green fieldsassociated with it. In the night even when the rainstopped the wetness of the soil was very high andthe roads were water logged. The wind was blowingwith a wet soil smell. There was some one insidethe mandapam crying with pain. That was a voiceof an aged person. He was sleeping on the floormat with a layer of bed sheets on it. Next to himwas a young girl attending to him with worry someface. Two sides of the mandapam were coveredwith mud walls and they were serving the purposeof temporary rooms. The old man was lying in

one of such temporary rooms. At the same timethere were two young lads in a heated argumentamong them on the other side of the mandapa. They were none other than Vallabha and Dutta. You should not have brought them here said DattaYou are also party to it. You accepted it respondedVallabha.I accepted for a different reason. They told methat the uncle of the girl who resides in Kanchiis one of the five people who went with LordRanganathas idol and tried to move the idol tosafety. I thought they will be very useful to ourmission. That is why I accepted to bring them alongresponded Datta.I also accepted for the same reason. Other thanthat there is a rightful cause in escorting themsaid Vallabhawhat that Dharmic cause? enquired DattaShe has helped us to escape unscathed. Dontforget thatOh! As if we could not have escaped without her!when the soldiers searched the house of the doctor,I only escaped on my own. When I heard the voicesof the soldiers I went out of the back door intothe back yard and hid myself inside the well. Doyou know how difficult it was to stand in the deepwell. I was feeling quite dizzy inside

Oh! You are saying this as if it is a big thing. Doyou know what happened to you when you gotpneumonia and when you were unconscious fordays?what happened? You were about to be identified by a soldier andthat girl dealt with it quite deftly and averted it.she pretended as if you were dead. She madeyou convalesce in a small room inside the medicalstore room. She served you for day and night withoutrest.hmm! Is this a great service?

yes, great service! Not only that it is also greatfortune for you!Fortune?Yes. You should be fortunate that a girl has servedyouI dont consider that as being fortunate! said Dattaseriously.

Even your escape from death?Yes. Fate decided and I survivedVallabha was surprised at the heartless responsesof Datta. He was silent for some time. Datta felta bit sorry for Vallabha and he wanted to draw himinto conversation. My focus is to search Lord RanganathaVallabha swiftly turned around and said My focusis also the same I know that said Datta. It was for that reason I accepted the girl and the

old man to come with us said Vallabhacan we find Ranganatha if this girl is with us?enquired Datta Iwont say surely we can. But in case we cansee her uncle.?If we happened to see him then I agree. But ifwe dont, what is there. I still see this as acompassionate help responded Vallabha. How?The grandfather of this girl has decided to handover the girl to her parents. If I fulfill it, it is a holydeed. Is it not?At that time suddenly Manjari came out of the roomand shouted Oh! Sirs, please come! Please come!at once! Grandfather is looking different! Both of them ran inside. The old man was shiveringand his eyes were sulking. Datta went and satby the side of him. After sometime the old manopened his eyes. He shed tears looking at thetwo young men next to him. He could recognizeDatta. He took Dattas hands into his. He laterturned to Manjari and said Can you please getme hot water?. Manjari and Vallabha got up andwent out. The old man caught the hands of Dattaand said:I am going towards Kanchi in the northern direction. This girl is my grand daughter and on the way I

caught severe fever. That is the reason I stayedat the doctors house in Poongulathunallur. Thedoctor treated me well. Even then due to old ageand weakness I could not fully recover. I considerthis as my last hours. That is the reason I haveto tell you something. You are god sent to me. Itwas he who designed our meeting at the doctorsplace. Come near me! said the old man sighingheave of relief.

Datta went closer to him.Yes. This girl is my grand daughter. She is theonly child of her parents. If this child is born theyvowed to visit Tirumala. They got the child. Becausethe child was getting sick frequently they did nottake the child to Tirumala. Both husband and wifeleft for Tirumala. The Kannanur war took place whenthey started. The victorious sultans army destroyedall the villages and towns. The parents of this childcould not escape the sultans army and got killed. They never returned! said the old man.Is this not known to the girl? enquired Datta. No , she does not know. Only when she was tenyears old she started seeking information abouther parents. I was all the time dodging with somereason or the other. I told her that they are in heruncles place in Kanchi. I told her that Becauseof sultans rule they could not return here. I spenttime like that, but now, at the end, due to the

pestering of the girl, I took the travel to Kanchisaid the old man.Datta was shocked. The old man was coughing very big and he couldnot speak after that. He caught his heart tightly. After a few hours the cough subsided and the oldman passed away.

********One fine morning when sun was slowly rising andshining with golden rays, when birds were chirpingsweetly Gopanna visited the small living place ofSri Vedanta Desika at Tirunarayanapuram. Afterpaying obeisance to the Swamy, he said Swamy!Adiyendasan will be going to Tirmula on a pilgrimage. Please bless meLord of Venkatachalam will always bless you.blessed Swamy DesikaSwamy , I have another desire said GopannaWhat desire? enquired Swamy Desika.I am desirous of searching for Lord Ranganathathere. I request your blessings for that also. SaidGopanna.Vedanta Desikas eyes sparkled with radiance. Hisface lit up with a smile.Gopanna! Why do you need this bhagavathaservants blessings? If the all auspicious Lord blessesyou that is enough. Who is personification of His

compassion ? It is Goddess Lakshmi who is residenton Lord Venkatachalapathis chest. You can seekyour blessings and compassion from thepersonification of compassion there respondedSwamyHis devoted eyes closed at that time and from themtears of joy rolled down.

    AHOBILAM AND AHOBILA MUTT - 15Dr. M.V.Soundararajan

On Adi Poornima day (14thJuly 1897) in the same yearhe adopted the sanyasaasramam in the immediatepresence of Sri Tenkanikkottai Swami H.H. Sri Varada

Ramanuja Mahadesikan from whom he obtainedkashaya and he named him as VEERA RAGHAVASATAKOPAN. As the day of his assuming SanyasaAsramam happened to synchronise with theChaturmasya Sankalpa day, he decided to stay atTiruvallur for the Sankalpa period in the cottage erectedfor him by the side of the temple tank.

At that time the District Munsif of Tiruvallur, who wasan AdvaitaVidwan, came to worship the Swami to seekclarification on certain portions of SruthiGeetha inBhagavatham. To dispel his doubts, he wroteSruthiGeethaVyakhyanam. After Sankalpa, heproceeded to Kanchipuram where he stayed for sometime worshipping Lord Sri Varadaraja. It was at thattime he gave discourses on works like Rahasyathraya

Sara to some of his disciples. He also composedSariraka Suprabhata in praise of Lord Sri Varadarajaand also composed one sloka as an addition to SriVedanthaDesikas GODA STUTHI to make it 30 verses. He also completed VedanthaKousthubaSaram.Hehelped restoring and strengthening temple worshipacross various locations in south india.

Later during Jan 22, 1899 (at his age of 54 years)based on the request of a highly eminent shishyadelegation from Ahobila Mutt after the 36thJeer attainedparamapadam he took over the mutt as 37 th Jeer ofSri Ahobila Mutt. The readers of VAK are already awareof this episode. During his eleven month tenure hehad an able administrator in the Ahobila Mutt by name

Sri MelpakkamNarasimhachariar who was quitefamous for his r ighteousness and devotion. Heentrusted the administrative affairs to this swamy andtook to helping various temples. It may be mentionedhere that there was a period between 1899-1905 whereSri Ahobila Mutt did not have any Jeer on the seat. Itwas the righteous MelpakkamNarasimhachari whomade life time sacrifices to perform the services asreceiver of the Ahobila Mutt. VAK will be bringing tolight the life of this swamy in a separate episode. His brothers son was the eminentVidwanMelpakkamNarasimhachariar who lived tillrecently as a famous scholar and did yeomen serviceto Indology and Sanskrit to the society.

In Tamil Vikari year (1899), in the month of Chithirai

(April), he undertook a tour of South India in order toworship Nammalwar at AlwarThirunagari. Heperformed his ChathurmasyaSankalpa inThiruvahindrapuram. While he was inThiruvahindrapuram, Sanskrit scholars l ikeDharmapuriSatakopachariar, SathavadhanamAnanthachariar, Devanathachariar and ChetlurNarasimhachariar, used to form his KalakshepaGoshti.I t was only then that Srimushnam SwarnamKrishnamachariar Swami and ChakravarthiVenkatachariar of Thirukkudandai (38thJeer of AhobilaMutt) had their Kalakshepa on Sri Bhashyam underthis Swami. He used to have his daily madhyahnika

snanam in the well constructed by Sri Vedantha Desikain Thiruvahindirapuram. Afterwards he would go toLakshimanarasimhaSannidhi for Mangalaharthi. After

completing his worship he would take his Bhiksha. His notable contribution to temple system is solvingof disputes among devotees at Thirvaheendrapuramand enable performance of utsavam to SwamyDesikanthere. He copmosed a poetic work called VedantaDesikothsavaVaibhava during his stay atThiruvaheendra puram.

After the Bhiksha the Swami used to take up theKalakshepa on Rahasyathraya Sara. In the eveninghe wil l have his snana in Garuda Nadi. Afterworshipping Lord Devanatha and Desika he used toreturn to the Mutt accompanied by a vast retinue ofdisciples reciting YathirajaSapthathi. He stayed in theThiruvahindirapuram till the AvatharaUthsavam of SriNigamanthaMahaDesika in the Tamil month ofPurattasi. The following month he undertook therenovation of the Avatharasthala of Sri VedanthaDesikathrough the financial assistance, among others, ofChakravarthiVenkatachariar (38thJeer of Ahobila Mutt)and ParuthipattuThiruvenkatachariar. After completingthe renovation work, he proceeded to Narasimhapuram(near Swamimalai in ThanjavurDt) to celebrate theannual Thirunakshatram of his Acharya, the famousAttipattuAlagiasingar.

He celebrated the Thirunakshatram of his Acharyafor ten days successfully. Because of arduous journeyby walk from Thiruvahindirapuram to Narasimhapuram, followed by strain on account of ThirunakshatraUthsavam, the Alagiasingar took ill. On the suggestion

of his disciples he took purgative. It had no effect;on the other hand, the taking of purgative seemedto have aggravated his illness. The deterioration ofhis health caused anxiety to one and all. It was atthat juncture that Sri Chakravarthi Venkatachariar (38 th

Jeer of Ahobila Mutt) requested to performUpayanushtanam for him. He requested him to haveSethuSnanam by PadaYathra before he could haveUpayanushtana. From the following day onwards, thehealth of Sri Alagiasingar started deteriorating.SrimushnamSwarnamKrishnamachariar and othershad their Upayanushtanam performed by our Swami.ThirukkudanthaiChakravarthiVenkatachariar who alsocame to know through telegram about the deterioratingstate of health of the Alagiasingar returned to

Narasimhapuram even without completing hisSethusnanam and requested PillaipakkamAlagiasingarto perform Upayanushtanam for him. The request wasconceded and he performed Bharasamarpanam forSri ChakravarthiVenkatachariar Swami also. Even inhis weak state of health, so long as he did not losememory, he was reciting PrapathiPrayogaVakyas andPadukaSahasraslokas. He started sinking day by day. After three or four days of his ailment on Poornimaday in the month of Margazhi in Vikari Year at the ageof 54 He ascended the divine abode during December1899 without nominating a successor. He wrote over25 books in his lifetime. (to be continued....)

    ALTERNATIVE TO COMMERCIALISATION -C.S. Rangarajan

Weak and selfish minds have mastered the art of corrupting everything. With vengence, they concentrate more concentratedly on the good traditions inherited from the past. The corruptinginfluence is so rampant and powerful that probably it competes openly with the omnipresent and

omnipotent creator.Circulation, rotation, turnover - call it by any name - is natural to the nature. Whether it is

air or water, they flow unobstructed. Nature's thirst for water is quenched by the raining clouds.Water absorbed from the entire surface of the earth forms the basis for the supply of water inthe clouds. Thus the water that starts its journey from the water surfaces, receives back the flowsof water - used, unused, misused, abused.

As in nature, so is it in human life. Production, Distribution and Consumption reflects thenatural change and exchange in almost all aspects of life. Commerce covers a wide gamut ofactivities, reflecting the circulatory nature. Commerce, per se, is not bad. Commercialisation, particularlyindiscriminate and rampant commercialisation is bad.

Particularly in monetary economy and more particularly in modern times nothing is FREE.Either the user directly or some one else indirectly have to pay for it; otherwise, no activity canbe sustained; no activity can be made more efficient and more effective. Probably, the only exceptions

are visible mother's love for her children and invisible God's love for His creation.Money has to be collected, properly accounted, appropriately spent, honestly audited and

so on - Whatever be the area of activity as money constitutes an inescapable reality.

Temples are no exception. God may be an exception, but temples cannot be an exception,as the omnipresent Nirakara God is considered as present (as Sakara) in the temple.

Money is needed for running the temple activities also. The unfortunate rampant and indiscriminatecommercialisation has resulted in the more discriminating devotee public, resent the manner inwhich different types of services are available, at various prices, catering more to the rich.

A charge for everything! Higher the charges, greater the distance between God and thedevotees.! Devotees in general resent the tickets culture. While they are generally willing togive some money as offerings, they resent the rate structure. Instead of love for God, the prevelantpractices create a fear for God. Social morality is the casuality.

Reports appear in News papers stating that all is not clean and clear and fair and honestwith administration in temples, particularly in money matters. A time has come when some seriousthinking, if necessary radical and unconventional thinking must look into the entire aspect of moneycollections in temples.

Probably, the Chilkur experiment is worth considering in this regard. Upto 8th Dec. 2001 -on an average around 200 devotees (local and outside) used to visit Chilkur temple for Balaji'sdarshan. As elsewhere, in Chilkur Balaji Temple also, there was a Hundi and there were Harathicollections also.

Whoever offers Me with devotion a leaf, a fruit, a flower, or water, that I accept of the pureminded man offered with devotion.

It suddenly dawned that can money and God be delinked? Devotees present, were divinelyinspired; decided to experiment; it is devotion and devotion alone that appeals to the Lord andnot the quantum of offerings - in whatever name and whatever form. They decided to discontinuewith immediate effect, the prevailing practice of Hundi and Harathi collections.

O Lord! your ways are wonderful! Unless it was your sankalpahow can such an idea knockat the hearts of the devotees? The moment the decision was implemented you started showeringyour blessings. The discontinuance of commercialisation dimension has obviously pleased you.So are your blessed devotees. The number of visiting devotees increased at such rapid ratethat to-day, the position is: above 25,000 devotees visit on Saturdays, Sundays and Festival daysand atleast 5000 on the other days. Oh lord Balaji of Chilkur, you have obviously blessed thisexperiment of Total de-commercialisation, shower your infinite blessings on your devotees. Showeryour blessings on administrators, politicians and all others who are connected, so that they canstudy and come out with more creative, practical and more non-commercial solutions for the

    complex problems of temples.

    THE LEGEND OF CHILKUR

The Balaji idol at Chilkur is said to have been discovered by an ardent devotee, in an anthill some 500

years ago. As old age prevented him from making his yearly pilgrimage to Tirupathi, the Lord is said tohave manifested himself at Chilkur for his devotee's sake.

As per the local legend, anyone desirous of seeking a wish fulfillment from Chilkur Balaji must firstmake 11 pradakshinas at the temple and after its granted, one must return to perform 108 pradakshinasas a way of expressing gratitude. And by the look of it, wishes are granted aplenty here.

Cash donations are neither expected nor accepted. Devotees can also deposit into the "Daily Pooja Fund"Fixed Deposit Account, details in the last page of VAK.

Dr. M.V. Soundararajan and C.S. Gopalakrishna are the Hereditary Archaka cum Trustees of the Temple.
