first-class retailer at 110 Broad Streetin Rome. Massey could spend anentire day talking enthusiasticallyabout jewelry, and one could spend anentire day looking over the gorgeouspieces he currently has on display.is Jan. 16, he sat down with

V3 to discuss his entrepreneurialbackground, as well as the diamonds,gemstones and assorted collectionsthat have most recently caught his eye.

[V3:] Lets begin with your background.Where are you from, and have you always

been in the jewelry business?[JM:] Well, I have lived in Rome since I wastwo years old. I went to West Rome HighSchool and Shorter College, and in college Iwas friends with Chuck Cade, whose familyowned a fine jewelry store downtown.Clarence, Chucks father, convinced me totake a job with a company he knew of as ajewelry wholesale supplier.

After several years (in the mid-70s), Iopened my own wholesale supply company

of gold, pearls and diamonds. We coveredGeorgia, Tennessee, Alabama and Florida.Four years later, a company bought me out.

One day I was in town talking to anotherjeweler and he asked me, Are you going tobuy Mr. Cades store? And I said I didntknow it was for sale. About two weeks later,

he asked me again and I told him that Ireally didnt think it was for sale. However,I called Mr. Cade and asked him about it.

Indeed the store was for sale, and I woundup buying it.

ats pleasantly ironic. How long wereyou there?I was there for five years until I moved thestore to Second Avenue, and then to the

corner building at the end of Broad Street.After seven years in that building I decidedI was ready to retire from the jewelry

business, and I actually closed the jewelrystore around 2004.

But you didnt retire the jewelry businessaltogether. How did you get back into it?I bought another building downtown andopened e Clearing House, a consignmentstore for furniture and accessories. At that

point I bought T. Martoonis, which wasacross the street, and closed [e ClearingHouse]. We became a full-blown restaurant.

So you went from jewels to food?Yes, but while I was in the restaurantbusiness I had a number of customers whokept coming to me and saying , We wouldreally like to see you in the jewelry business.We want this and that and cant get it, andwe would love for you to be in the businessagain.

We were in the restaurant business fortwo years until I decided that wasnt reallywhat I wanted to do. I didnt want to work

18 hours a day. If I was going to workthat hard, I was going to be in the jewelrybusiness.

And at the point you closed it, openedup another jewelry store on Glen Milner,then went back to Broad Street?

Yes, and that is where we arenow. We just finished our thirdyear here and we are back to afull-service jewelry and repairshop. We also do design work,clock repair, and carry prettymuch any line [in] the industry.

So it sounds like you haveowned and operated a lot ofsuccessful businesses. Do youconsider yourself more of a

jeweler or an entrepreneur?[Laughs] I would say in the pastI have been an entrepreneur.But right now Im a jeweler, andthats probably where Ill stay.

What are some of the linesyou have in stock today?We carry a variety of finelines. We carry an absolutelygorgeous line fromElma-Gil.

And we also carry Denny Wong, a Hawaiiandesigner who does some absolutelyphenomenal pieces.

We also have Natalie K, which is abeautiful, high-quality bridal line. We doPandora, which is probably one of the mostpopular lines in the industry today. We sell a

lot of it.And we do

quite a bit ofcustom jewelryin-house andout. We can docustom [work]for our clientsat a price thatis no more thanbuying a piecefrom a showcase,because of our[high-tech]

productionprocess.

Who is yourfavorite type ofcustomer? Is itthe couple thatcomes in foran engagementring, someone

seeking a custom-made ring that theyreexcited about, or someone with aparticular brand watch in mind?All of my customers are my favoritecustomers. [Laughs] e wonderful thingabout the jewelry business is that whenyou do a piece for someone, whether itsright out of the showcase or custom made,they are excited. at is one of things thisindustry offers that no other industry does.

How many industries can you go into inthe morning to be surrounded by beautifulartbasically, that is what nice jewelryiswork with it all day long, make peoplehappy, and then go home? Where else can

you find that? Nowhere.And I dont know that I would have [justone] favorite customer. It is just as muchfun for me to have a couple come in andpick out an engagement ring as it is to sitdown with a customer and design a piecefor her. e reaction that you get, that smileon [her] face, is just as important for onetype of jewelry as it is for another. Or ifsomeone comes in and looks at one of mydesigners like Denny Wong: I show them atanzanite ring and they are just wowed. Itsall wonderful.

And if someone doesnt know what he orshe wants, what may that customer find at

Masseys?We have some pieces now that are basicallypearl pieces, but they incorporate antiquegambling chips that are 250 years old.People get excited about the history ofthose. e gambling chips were createdaround the mid-17th century when theBritish were in China. ey were handmadeby the Chinese for the British upper familiesand royalty, from mother-of-pearl.

IT IS JUST AS MUCH FUN FOR ME TO HAVEA COUPLE COME IN AND PICK OUT AN

ENGAGEMENT RING AS IT IS TO SIT DOWNWITH A CUSTOMER AND DESIGN A PIECE FOR

this is not your typical sandwich shop.ere is an eclectic mix of individualsdining inside, ranging from businesspeopleto blue-collar laborers.e menu readsWhere Friends Meet , and, after a thoroughinspection, this truly seems to be the case.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary as

a staple of Romes daytime restaurantestablishment, Anas continues to thrive byserving its clientele with the same qualityit has since opening its doors. And votedBest Sandwich in Rome by the RomeNews-Tribune this past year, it comes aslittle surprise that as so many restaurantshave gone under in the last quarter-century,Anas has managed to weather the winds ofeconomic change.

It wasnt always the deli that it is today.Originally, Anas was a simple cheese andsandwich shop, but as time went on, ownerAna Williamon started adding dishes suchas Lasagna, and offered a refund to anyonewho didnt like what they received. Needlessto say, there were no returns, and Anas has

been building customer loyalty ever since.Williamon herself describes the deli as a

mixture of Italian and Spanish influences,and says that when her bookkeepers tellher she is giving away too much food, shereplies, I dont care. Its what makes mycustomers happy.

And making customers happy is whatAnas Deli is all about.

In fact, the customers who come to seeher regularly are people she knows by name,and people who appreciate the quality of

the food she serves. When Ana is not at theshop, customers ask where she is and whenwill she return.

In addition to her role as a businessowner, Ana is also a family woman. Herhusband, Mark, works at the deli alongsideher, and says he enjoys the job as muchas she does. She also has four daughters

ranging in age from 9 to 27.But in between being a wife, mother andbusinesswoman, Williamon still managesto make time for volunteer work, much ofwhich goes into helping Romes low-incomeHispanic community. A customer of Anasonce relayed a story to her about a 17-year-old boy who was in the hospital and very

close to dying. In response, she quicklycoordinated and oversaw a plan that wouldallow the boys parents to travel all the wayto America to be with him.

In another tale of goodwill, a family offour was evicted from an area hotel, andtheir church told them to come to Anas.

For the next few days they stopped by, andWilliamon helped feed them and give thema place to rest their feet. e family later toldher that she gave them hope that everythingwas going to work out for them, and thatbecause of her they would be alright.

But getting back to the food: With a menudetailing over 25 delectable dishes to choosefrom, there is certainly something here thatwill tempt anyone who has an appreciationfor down home, reasonably priced cuisine.After all, this is Where Friends Meet, andafter just one visit you will understand why.VVV

As owner and executive director ofRomes Sylvan Learning Center, Angelaisnt the least bit shy about expressing

her enthusiasm and love for herprofession. And last years short moveacross Eastird Street to 210 East SecondAvenue has further fueled her passion forchanging lives through education. Moreclassroom space, brighter learning areas,and an overall more modern feel have beenthe initial benefits for Baron and her staffof highly trained teachers and tutors. ekids love the space when they come backhere, she says. Its fun for us andfor them.

Sylvan Learning Center has over 1,100branches worldwide, and in its 30-yearhistory has helped tutor over two million

To startout, Angela explains, a parent is going tocall and we are going to try to get as muchinformation as we can about their child,their learning situation and what they mayneed help in. I want my child above grade

level; my child needs to catch up in math;my child need SAT prep; whatever it mightbe. We will do a consultation, and if noassessment is needed, we can move forwardwith the plan from there.

Its personalized, individualized for thechild. If they need an assessment because

we dont know why they are struggling inschool, we will perform various batteriesand pinpoint the exact skill that theymissed or didnt learn in school.

Aside from growing classrooms andcommon learning deficiencies childrenmay have, Angela sees other factors that

may lead to a student falling behindtheir peers in certain areas. Perhaps theschool didnt cover a certain area in theirlessons, it wasnt part of the curriculum,or maybe the student never grasped theconcept before the class moved on tosomething else. Everyone in the...worldhas what we call skill gaps, certain thingsthat we dont know or have a harder timeunderstanding. And when we find theseskill gaps we can build a program for thestudent.is ethos centered on personal attention

continues beyond the walls of Sylvan. Asthe saying goes, education begins in the

home, and this is something Angela andSylvan have taken to heart with their seriesof seminars for parents. While teachersundergo years of schooling and trainingbefore stepping into the classroom, parentsare often taking on this role unpreparedand nightly.

Its important for us , too, Baronstresses, to help parents at home knowhow to help their children. Every parent hasbeen confused by a third-grade worksheetthat their child has brought home at somepoint. We want for them to feel empoweredand know that they can help, so we offer anumber of [parental] seminars.

Aside from monthly seminars, Sylvan

also offers numerous educational materialsfor parents to employ at home, regardless ofwhether or not their child has enrolled in atutoring program.

In addition to the role Sylvan playsin educating outside its doors, ituses a comprehensive online supportsystem. Different schools adopt differenttextbooks and workbooks year-to-year for avariety of subjects, of course, leaving third-

filter in this area, where heavy volumes ofrun-offcan swell its banks in a matter ofminutes during bouts of heavy rain.

Considered the most threatened segmentof the river, the upper Flint, from itsurban birth to the fall line swamps nearMontezuma, also bears perhaps the mostbeautiful section of any navigable river in

the state. Home to a diverse range of floraand fauna, the upper Flint is an extremelyunique ecosystem to Georgiaquitepossibly the only place hereabouts whereone can find mountain laurel and otherupstate plants, sharing the same hillsidebanks with blue-stem palmetto and low-hanging Spanish moss, both synonymouswith the coastal South.ere are four federally endangered

mussels located in the upper Flint, anda fishermans favorite, the Shoal Bass, isfound only in the Flint and ChattahoocheeRiver basins. Some of the pristine publicand private forests that buffer the Flint

are home to black bear, wild turkey anddeer, providing an ideal setting for localsportsmen to hunt. e only part of the stateknown for its mountains and high elevationsis North Georgia, home to the foothills ofthe Appalachians, but the west central partof the state is also home to a small range ofridges thatrun east towest out ofAlabama,north ofColumbus.e Flint

River, justsouth of Molena, Ga., enters this region,and for millions of years has cut, grindedand winded its way through the high hillsand resistant rocks.is segment of theFlint is over 20 miles in length, and is hometo numerous shoals and rapids. With highridges rising from both its eastern andwestern banks, its a popular spot withcanoeists and kayakers, not only for itschallenging waters, but for its beautifulvistas. At the south end of this mountainousstretch lies Pine Mountain and SprewellBluffState Park, which offer visitorsfromboth water and landsome of the mostbeautiful and rugged scenery in the state. Itwouldnt be unheard of for one to double-

check their map to ensure they hadnttraveled north to the Blue Ridge Mountains.

But the geologic features that make theupper Flint attractive to those seekingadventure or scenic beauty also appealto those attempting to impede its naturalflow.e high bluffs along the upper Flint,especially the cliffbanks at Sprewell Bluff,are prime real estate for any proposed damor reservoir.

e recent discussionsand increasing threat of damconstruction at this locationare nothing new. As early as1910, writes Doug Allen ina 1974 issue ofe GeorgiaConservancy Magazine, theFlint River Power Company

began plans to purchase landfor a dam site at SprewellBluff, and during the periodfrom 1912 through the 1920sculminated the effort.

For the next 50 years,Sprewell Bluffand the upperFlint were listed in a numberof public works proposals,reaching a head in the early1970s. In 1971 through1972, the U.S. Army Corpsof Engineers began revisingits plans for the SprewellBluffProject, a congressional

works project started manyyears before with the goal ofdeveloping a dam and power facilities atSprewell Bluff. Reaction to the Corp ofEngineers new plans and its EnvironmentalImpact Statement were swift, and manyconservation groups and state agencies

worked tothwart theSprewellBluffProjectfrom evergetting offthe ground.e Scenic

Rivers Bill, a Georgia legislative proposalin 1972, sought to grant protective statusto this segment of the Flint and deride theCorps of Engineers plans. Sadly, it failed.

What happened next was an amazinglyconcerted effort on the behalf of concernedcitizens, state and national wildlife agenciesand inquisitive politicians, to shed lighton a dam proposal that would be neitherfinancially nor environmentally beneficial tothe state. U.S. Senator Herman Talmadge ofGeorgia led the effort to expose the financialdownside of the project by requesting afederal accounting review. e U.S. Bureauof Sport Fisheries and Wildlife and theDepartment of Natural Resources made

In October 1973, then Governor JimmyCarter vetoed the Sprewell BluffProject,citing inadequate evidence from the U.S.Army Corps of Engineers to justify theeffort. With this veto, he also establisheda park, which later became Sprewell BluffState Park. In his Statement on the Sprewell

BluffDam, Carter makes his case:I have personally read all the written

reports and transcripts of oral testimonymade available to me. I have consulted withmore than fifty delegations. I have analyzedseveral thousand letters and telegramsand numerous petitions and resolutions.I have traversed the area twice by canoeand twice by helicopter.... In my mind,there is no doubt that I made the correctrecommendation or decision.

Jimmy Carter, in 1973, knew that the fightwas far from over (his ruling was almostoverturned the next year by the GeneralAssembly), and, in time, those who sawthe importance of a wild upper Flint Riverwould gain strength. I am convinced thatamong Georgians not motivated directlyby financial profit a heavy majority opposeconstruction of this dam and other similarprojects, Carter continues. is majoritywill probably increase in future years witha growing awareness of these irreplaceablenatural resources.

Beginning in 2006 and continuing throughthe summer of 2008, Georgia faced one theworse natural disasters in its history: severe,prolonged drought. River-fed lakes such as

machine, then listen to the message as it isbeing left for you.

Of course, it is completely up to theindividual as to whether he or she wants toanswer the call during screening (e.g., if itis important), but all things considered, itis a tremendous feature that has been left

virtually extinct in light of the popularity ofmobile phones over the last decade.e Google Voice application is available

for some mobile phones at this time, to beused for placing outgoing calls while usingthe service.

As of today, Google Voice is only availableon a per-invite basis, so if you have a Gmail

account it is definitely worth signing up(especially given that it is free of charge),and is a pretty neat tool to boot.

Last, but certainly not least, is the newestproject that Google has embarked uponover the past year: Google Wave.

Building on their previous successes inonline document collaboration via theirGmail service,Google decided tomake a completelyWeb-drivenapplication thatcombines all of itsemail, document

and chat capabilities into one mashed upprogram that aims to reinvent email as wenow know it.

Simply put, what GoogleWaveWaveallows you to do is work with multiplefellow users in the same Wave to shareand edit documents in real time, engage in

live conversations, and fully collaborate withothers in a singular environmentall whileintegrating email and chat. ese Wavescan be built upon over any span of time, andcan be played back to see which user madecertain changes over the life of the Wave.

In addition, Wave can automaticallyfix spelling errors, and has the ability to

translate up to 40 languages using Googlesextensive automated translation tools.ough merely in the early stages of its

production, and so ahead of its time thatits almost detrimental, Wave is showinggreat promise for the future as it is currentlyexperiencing day-to-day upgrades in itsinitial beta stage. With only 100,000 usersreceiving a September 09 invite to start,Google has since begun to hand out moreand more invites, and are giving even luckierrecipients a limited number of invites topass along to friends and coworkers.

As we have seen, Google is continuing itspush to set the pace in todays innovative

tech market, pumping out as manyforward-thinking devices and applicationsas possible, showing no sign of slowdown.With more and more new products comingto fruition and the constant perfecting ofexisting technologies, Google is poised tostay at the forefront of the game. VVV

f you like fuzzy things and happiness,dont read Cormac McCarthys newbook,e Road. ats not to say it isnt

a winner. In fact, just the opposite. enagain, I cant stand fuzzy things and haventspoken to happiness in weeks.

Set in the post-apocalyptic destitution ofa dying planet, nameless protagonists Manand Boy scavenge the roadside for their

next meal or workable tool, all while hidingout from marauding gangs of rapists andcannibals. e world has turned to dust andash, and nothing isleft alive except afew lost remnantsof mankind, whois slowly becomingextinct.

Typically, Idont particularlyfavor McCarthyswriting. His most popular work, 2005sNo Country For Old Men, would havebeen indecipherable if I hadnt seen theCoen Brothers fantastic film adaptationfirst. And though McCarthy does penbeautifully scripted images and phrases,theyre horribly placed in his manic streamof consciousness style. Two sentences inone paragraph can be placed back-to-backand have nothing to do with the other.One sentence might not have a subject orpredicate. One might be dialogue with littlepunctuation or no indication that someoneis even speaking.

Granted,e Roads compositionflowed much more smoothly thanNo Country, but there were stillbig rubber tires damming up thecurrent. Constantly I was forced to rereadthe same page six times (though it should benoted that I have a horrible attention span).e story is bleak with a hopeful kind of

ending. After some mysterious catastrophe

turned the world and its population torubble, father and son follow a dangerousroad headed south to the ocean, where the

father thinks the Earths now London-styleweather might get better.

Its not very immersive in summary, butthe heavy detail to location and grippingrelationship between boy and dad keepthe reader heavily intrigued. Page by pageyou grow increasingly concerned with thecharacters well-being and survival, whichis good given that for some 300 of thosepages they are the only characters youmeetbesides mass-raping cannibals andrandom NPCs.

McCarthys universe is barren anddangerous, and theres never any indication

as to what type of apocalypse wiped itout. e man does entertain flashbacks inrandom paragraphs, though mainly justabout the Boys suicidal mother, whichdoesnt give much insight as to what

happened to the rest of the world.At first I credited this lack of backgroundto lazy writing, but by the end I appreciatedthe anonymity of the catastrophe, as well asthe characters names and vague ending.

If the boy had been named Matt and thedad named Bruce, and they were both fromNorth Georgia and the world died of alcoholpoisoning, then I think it wouldve beenharder to walk away when I finished. LuckilyI didnt have to carry any leftover baggageafterwards. (Which is good because Im amans man and we prefer to pack light.)

If youre a guys guy and need a book toread, then Cormac McCarthyse Roadisa good, easy pickup. Just skip through theparagraphs that dont make much sense andrefer to the movie tie-in cover for whatshappening.

However, if youve got daddy issues or anewborn baby, skip this one unless yourereally confident in that plywood bombshelter you built before Y2K. As for thefemale readers out there, some of you maylike this dark cloud of a book. at is, if youdont like fuzzy things and happiness. VVV

wonderment about the life they missed.Measuring themselves in combat,living among heroic men. at kind ofcompanionship is a love story, too, and onethat most women cannot understand. Ididnt when I visited Columbus, Ga.s FortBenning just before the Ranger Battalionsdeployed to Somalia in 1993.

Heres an excerpt from my journal entryabout the Ranger Social that night. Bill isa young Ranger who lost a leg in Panama

and his sweetheart right after that:

I have never in my life seen such beautyas I saw in that room. At least two hundredmenand each one of them strong, proud,

When discussing vision problems,sometimes the term refractive error ismentioned. What does that mean?In the normal eye, light is focused preciselyonto the retina to produce clear vision. isis done by two structures, the cornea (frontwindshield of the eye) and the lens (inside theeye).

If light is not focused sharply on theretina, a refractive error occurs andresults in blurry vision. Refractive errorsinclude nearsightedness, farsightedness andastigmatism.

Changing the shape of the cornea alters theway light is focused on the retina, making it

possible to correct refractive errors.

When did laser surgery originate in theU.S. and how effective is it in correcting

vision?In 1995, the Excimer laser was introducedand this cool laser technologyrevolutionized cornea-based refractivesurgery.e use of this laser in LASIKsurgery is familiar to most, but theoriginal use was for a procedure calledPhotorefractive Keratectomy (PRK). In a PRKprocedure, the laser is applied directly to thesurface of the cornea.

How is the Excimer used in LASIK andPRK and how much recovery time isneeded?In 1996, the Excimer laser was approved foruse in LASIK surgery in the United States.LASIK has an additional step compared toPRK. First a flap is created in the cornea,usually with another type of laser.is flap

is laid back and the Excimer laser treatmentis applied to the deeper layers of the cornea.e flap is then replaced allowing for quickerhealing.

While both PRK and LASIK are very

effective at correcting vision, most LASIKpatients can return to work the day aftersurgery. PRK patients may require severaldays before they can function normally.

With the recent addition of Intralasetechnology, the LASIK flap can be cutwith a laser instead of a razor blade. isall laser or bladeless LASIK approachadds another degree of precision to thisalready excellent procedure. is precision,quick recovery time, and the ability tocorrect nearsightedness, astigmatism andfarsightedness has made LASIK easily themost popular refractive surgery procedure inthe world.

Is lens implant surgery an alternativeoption to laser surgery?Rather than reshape the natural surface ofthe eye, it is possible to correct vision byimplanting a new lens inside the eye. emost impressive of the lens-based options isthe Implantable Contact Lens or ICL.e ICL is a powerful tool for the

correction of nearsightedness. I wasprivileged to implant the first ICL in the stateof Georgia after FDA approval, and I havebeen an instructor at many ICL certificationcourses around the country.e ICL is a very thin lens that is inserted

into the eye under minor sedation and placedbetween the iris and natural lens.ere areno sutures and the ICL does not requiremaintenance like a regular contact lens. isprocedure also does not require removal ofthe natural lens already present in the eye.

Many nearsighted patients who are notLASIK candidates often can be corrected

with the ICL. Even more impressive is thefact that the ICL can be combined withLASIK or PRK.is might be done for anextremely nearsighted person or one withsignificant astigmatism that cannot be

corrected by the ICL alone.is combination of technologies, called

bioptics, allows us to correct patients whowould never have dreamed of having anoption just a few years ago.

Is there a lens-based method available forolder farsighted individuals, where LASIKis not really on option?Yes, another lens-based surgery is called aRefractive Lens Exchange, or RLE.

Here, a lens is also implanted in the eye.However, while ICL surgery does not requirethe removal of the patients natural lens, inan RLE the natural lens is first removed or

exchanged for another lens implant, aswould be done in a cataract surgery. It isalso possible to combine RLE with PRK orLASIK, further increasing the range of thisprocedure.

e options can be confusing. How do Iknow what is best for my vision?With so many options available, patientsshould seek out a surgeon experienced in allprocedures to be sure they have all optionsexplained to them thoroughly. VVV
