‘DSP Workshop’ @ ASE - Bengaluru
Cranes Software International Limited, Bengaluru under the Industry-Academia
Programme conducted the ‘DSP Workshop’ for the students and teaching staff members of the
Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering at ASE-Bengaluru on 29th & 30th
September, 2012.
The workshop was presided over by Mr. Bhushan Iyer, Mr. Mayank Aggarwal and Mr.
Pranav Mistry from Cranes Software and was attended by around 60 students and a number of
teaching staff members.
The participants were introduced to DSP in practical applications and in the process
covered topics like working of cache, floating point processors, different types of processors,
TMSC6000, C6000 roadmap, general DSP architecture, C6000 DSP architecture etc. The
session on C6000 concluded with 2 quizzes.
The second day of the workshop saw Mr. Pranav Mistry explaining how to link the
objects & gestures in the world thereby creating a simpler and comfortable work space for an
individual and Mr. Aggarwal briefing the audience about the various companies they shared
partnership with.
The participants resumed the experiments conducted on Day 1 and it was repeated on
a higher version of the software (v4.1). After completion of the project a small review was
done with all the code specifications to reinforce the concepts. Then the students were shown
how sound signals varied from one another. Students were later divided into groups and were
given DSP kits to do the project by themselves, so that they could learn the real time
applications.
The workshop was concluded with lectures by the Cranes personnel encouraging
students take up further courses in DSP and perform more projects in that area.

JULY 2012 PAGE 3
ACROM (Amria Club for Robotics and Mechatronics) started the activities for this
semester with a basic introductory workshop on 2nd October, 2012. The workshop was
conducted by III year B.Tech. students - Mr. Akash K. and Mr. Yeshwant G. Though the
workshop was intended to be for the I year students, higher semester students were also part
of it. The workshop had 160 participants.
The workshop was conducted in two sessions. The sessions started with understanding
basics of Mechanics and basics of Electronics as applied to Robotics. It also included
demonstrations of some in-house built robots like - ‘All Terrain Vehicle (ATV)’, ‘RC Plane’ etc.,
to entice the students in to the field of Robotics. At the end of the session, feedback from the
participants were taken, which turned out to be very good and encouraging. The outcome of
this workshop is that many students have requested for a workshop on ‘Advanced Concepts in
Robotics’.
The next event planned is a hands-on workshop to build a ‘Line follower’,
‘Accelerometer Control’ etc., followed by a workshop on building an ‘Articulated Arm’ during
this semester.

“A Content-based image retrieval System for Echo Image Using SQL-based Clustering
Approach” - Sudarshan T.S.B., Nandagopalan S., Adiga B.S., Dhanalakshmi C. And
Manjunath C.N.; The Imaging Science Journal, Volume 60, No. 5, October 2012.
Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) consists of retrieving the most visually similar images to a given query image from a database of images. CBIR from medical image databases does not aim to replace the physician by predicting the disease of a particular case but to assist him/her in diagnosis. The visual characteristics of a disease carry diagnostic information and oftentimes visually similar images correspond to the same disease category. By consulting the output of a CBIR system, the physician can gain more confidence in his/her decision or even consider other possibilities. In this paper, we aim at building an efficient content-based echo image retrieval (CBEIR) system. Echocardiography provides important morphological and functional details of the heart which can be used for the diagnosis of various cardiac diseases. Normally two-dimensional (2D) echo and colour Doppler image modalities are used for analysis and clinical decisions. From 2D echo images, features such as dimensions of cardiac chambers (area, volume, ejection fraction, etc.) are extracted, whereas texture properties, kurtosis, skewness, edge gradient, colour histogram, etc., are extracted from colour Doppler images. Hence, this forms a multi-feature descriptor which then is used to retrieve similar images from the database. A novel clustering approach merged with the traditional CBIR model is used for development in order to speed up the retrieval and enhance the accuracy of retrieval. The main focus of our work is the following: efficient segmentation algorithm, accurate detection of cardiac chambers, new and fast method to obtain colour portion of the Doppler image, and finally is able to categorise the type of disease and the severity level. These domain-specific low-level features are very important to build a reliable and scalable CBIR model. The similarity values are obtained by Euclidean distance metric. The feature database is basically a set of quantitative and qualitative features of the images. Our image database is populated with diverse set of approximately 623 images extracted from 60 normal and abnormal patients acquired from a local cardiology Hospital. Exhaustive experimentation has been conducted with various input query images and combinations of features to compute the retrieval efficiency which are validated by domain experts. It has been shown through recall precision graphs that the proposed method outperforms compared to others reported in the past.

“Shunt active filter with reduced harmonics for power quality improvement in distributed
systems” - Dr. Rashmi M.R., A. Suresh, T. Nageswara Rao; Wulfenia Journal, No.10,
Volume 19, October, 2012.
There are two approaches to the mitigation of power quality problems. The first approach is called load conditioning, which ensures that the equipment is less sensitive to power disturbances, allowing the operation even under significant voltage distortion. The other solution is to install line conditioning systems that suppress or counteracts the power system disturbances. A flexible and versatile solution to voltage quality problems is offered by active power filters (AF). Currently they are based on PWM converters and connect to low and medium voltage distribution system in shunt or in series. Shunt active power filters operate as a controllable current source. Earlier it was stated that Shunt AF cannot be used in multilevel or multistep modes to improve performance in higher ratings. From the simulation results presented in this paper it is proved that the Shunt AF filters can be used in multilevel mode to enhance the power quality. Shunt active filter is designed by using a pulse width modulated cascaded seven level inverter. Here the number of levels in cascaded multilevel inverter is increased to reduce THD. The simulation is carried out using MATLAB/Simulink and the simulation results are presented in this paper.

“ Performance of Coconut Shell Particulate Filled Polyester Composites” - B.H. Nanjunda
Reddy; Pakistan Journal of Science and Industrial Research, Vol. 55, issue 3, October,
2012.
Tensile and flexural properties of coconut shell particulate reinforced polyester resin matrix based composites were evaluated to assess the possibility of using these fillers as a new eco-friendly material in engineering applications. Composites were made out of the function of coconut shell powder with different weight variations viz. 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 wt %, treated with 5% NaOH alkali solution and these were prepared by hand lay-up process. Performance was increased gradually as filler content increased beyond 25 wt %, heat deflection temperature (HDT) increased up to certain percentage (i.e.25 wt %) of filler in polyester above which no influence in its value was observed. The glass transition temperature (Tg) and thermal stability was improved significantly. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs were also studied to illustrate the particle/matrix interactions. These composites were further subjected to an evaluation of thermo gravimetric, differential scanning calorimetry, and heat deflection temperature (HDT) analysis.
