IntroductionTheOfficial ASE Study Guide of Automobile TestsisintendedtohelptechniciansstudyfortheASEcertificationtests.Theinformationinthisbookletcoversthetechnologyfoundinmostalloftoday’sautomobiles,sportutilityvehicles,andlighttrucks.Thespecificinformationabouteachtest,foundinthefollowingpages,shouldprovetobeausefultoolforreviewingthetechnicalknowledgethatiscoveredintheAutomobiletests.Afterperformingathoroughreview,itshouldbeeasiertoselectadditionalreferencematerialthatwillassistyouwithyourtestpreparationneeds. How Do I Become Certified?ThereareninetestsintheAutomobileTechniciancertificationseries.Ifyoupassoneormoretests,andhaveatleasttwoyearsofhands-onworkingexpe-rienceinautomotiverepair,youwillbecomecertifiedasanASEAutomobileTechnician. IfyoupasstestsA1throughA8andmeettheexperiencerequirement,youwillearnthecertificateofMasterAutomobileTechnician.Note:TestA9isnotrequiredforMasterAutomobileTechnicianstatus.(Appropriatevocationaltrainingmaybesubstitutedforuptooneyearofworkexperience.) IfyouarecurrentlycertifiedinDieselEngines(A9,H2,S2,orT2) andElectrical/ElectronicSystems(A6,H6,S6,orT6),youareeligibletotaketheL2ElectronicDieselEngineDiagnosisSpecialisttest. Who Writes the Questions?Thequestions,writtenbyserviceindustryexpertsfamiliarwithallaspectsofautomobilerepair,areentirelyjob-related.Theyaredesignedtotesttheskillsthatyouneedtoknowinservicingautomobiles;theoreticalknowledgeisnotcovered. • Service or repair knowledge and skill:Testsyourunderstandingandabilitytoapplygenerallyacceptedrepairproceduresandprecautionsinassembly,disassembly,andreconditioningoperations;and inmaking inspectionsandadjustments.Alsotestsyourabilitytouseshopmanualsandprecisiontoolsofthetrade.

• Testing and diagnostic knowledge and skill:Testsyourabilitytorecognizeproblemsandtousegenerallyavailablemeasurementandtestingequipmenttomakeadiagnosis.Alsotestsyourabilitytotracetheeffectsofaparticularconditionandfindthecauseofaparticularsetofsymptoms.

At the Test Center—Some TipsArriveearlyenoughtoparkandfindtheTestCenteroffice.LatearrivalsmaybeturnedawaybytheTestCenterstaff.Ifyoucannottakeatestbecauseyouarelate,youwillforfeityourtestfees. BringyourAdmissionTicketandphotoIDwithyou.Books,calculators,andotherreferencematerialwillnotbepermittedinthetestroom.Youwillbeassignedalockertostoreallyourpersonalitems(cellphone,coat,hat,etc.) Noelectronicdevicesareallowedinthetestroom. Youwillreceivescratchpaperandpencils,andifyouaretakingan AdvancedLeveltest,aCompositeVehiclebooklet.Onceyouareseated, thesupervisorwillexplainhowtousethecomputerandmouse.Eachtest appointmentbeginswithashorttutorialthatwillhelpyoubecomefamiliar withtheoperationofthecomputer-basedtest.Youcanalsopreviewthesystemonlineatwww.ase.com/cbtbeforeyougototakeyourtest. Eachtesthasaspecifictimelimit,aslistedearlier.Asyoutakeeachtest, thecomputerscreenwillcontinuouslydisplaytheamountoftimeleft.Youcantakeabreakifnecessary,buttheclockwillcontinuetorun.Ifyoufinishearly,youmayreviewyouranswersorcontinuetothenexttest,ifyourappointmentincludesmultipletests.Onceyousubmitatestforscoring,youcannotgobackandreviewit. Ifaquestionisdifficult,marktheanswerthatyouthinkiscorrectand flagthequestionusingtheon-screenbutton.Thengoontothenextquestion.Whenyouhavefinishedthetest,youmayhavetimetogobacktothosequestionsyouhaveflagged.Yourscoreisbasedonthenumberofcorrectanswersthatyougive,soitistoyouradvantagetoanswereveryquestion. Whenyoufinishyourlasttest,youwillbegivenashortcustomersatisfac-tionsurvey.Whenyoucompleteit,youcanreporttothestaffandreceiveyourscorereports.

Thesetaskdescriptionsofferdetailedinformationtotechnicianspreparingforthetestandtopersonswhomaybeinstructingtechnicians.Thetasklistsmayalsoserveasguidelinesforquestionwriters,reviewers,andtestassemblers.
