INSTITUTE Call: V-Dem Best Student Paper Award 2016 Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) is announcing the inaugural best student paper award. The award will be presented to the author (or authors) of a student essay, out- standing for its theoretical and empirical contributions. 2016 Theme: Democracy and Development This year we welcome essays that examine the relationship between democratization and/or democratic institutions, and development outcomes such as poverty reduction, alleviating hunger, improving the quality and access to education, water and sanitation, economic growth or other such outcomes. Criteria: The empirical analysis should rely on V-Dem as one main source of data. The data is available free of charge via: https://v-dem.net/en/data/. To be eligible, the author must be a master or bachelor student at the time of submission. Only one paper per author can be submitted and the paper must be unpublished, original work, and must not involve non-students as co-authors. A paper should typically be developed from work in a class, during an internship experience, or as part of a thesis project. Submission: Please submit your paper to: [email protected] The submission must contain the following: 1. The paper: Word .doc or .docx format Maximum 12,000 words (exclusive of references and appendices), font size 12 and follow a standard citation style Tables, graphs, images, etc. should appear within the body of the paper Author name should not appear anywhere in the main text. A separate cover page with title, author names, institutional affiliations, and an abstract of 250 words or less 2. Author’s CV Deadline: June 5, 2016 Award: 500 USD The winner will also be given the opportunity to present the paper at a V-Dem conference/workshop (travel and accommodation included).
