a. www.pinterest.com This picture
describes how my writing process was throughout the semester. When I first
started in this course my writing wasn’t all that bad in fact I had some good
qualities to my writing. For example like in the picture my good side was that I
am very good at spelling. I always knew how to spell words correctly even when I
was in elementary school it just came naturally for me. Also, my grammar is
pretty decent. I wouldn’t say it is the best because it does need some work here
and there but grammar was never really an issue for me. Now for my bad
side….my diction was the worst, my sentence structures were very poor and I
procrastinate a lot. This part of my writing I would say would be my bad side.
Now I do have to admit that my procrastination skills have gotten better through
the course because all the papers we have written about especially the inquiry
paper was of my interest. I found out that if the topic I am writing about is of
some kind of interest to me, then my papers will be a lot more successful. Overall,
everyone has a good side and a bad side with their writing but it is figuring out
what your not so good in and applying it that will make you a better writer!
b. If I were to teach this class….I would definitely emphasize the fact that you will
never get better in writing unless you apply what you are bad at and make it
better. Also, I would make sure that we would be writing a lot of papers….not
necessarily long papers but many so that your writing gets better with practice.
We would also be reading short stories and poems and then go over them in class
and pick out what was good in the writing and what was bad. It is good to look at
other examples to get an idea of what maybe you aren’t so good at with your own
writing. I also believe that grammar practice is a must always and going over
spelling. Sometimes, students lose the knowledge that they had of spelling words
correctly because of text messaging and social media and all these shortened
down words.
c. “Max Moran No Way Out”- I enjoyed this article out of all the readings that were
assigned this semester because I liked how the writer described how he rides the
trains at night because he likes to get away from reality and go to his happy place,
which is a “better world.” I like how Max is not ashamed of where he comes
from. He doesn’t want to be living in this “fake world” of crime, discrimination,
and murder that he lives in now. He sticks up for himself and knows better than to
commit a crime ever. I think he is a very intelligent kid that will do the right
things and push those away who try to influence him the other way. He doesn’t
like the way the world is now and how people are ruining it and wants to make a
change. This article proves a point about our world and how there is so much
crime and murder and poverty but that doesn’t make everyone who lives in this
type of situation bad. There are good people out there that want to do good but
were born in bad and can’t find a way out. I liked this article the most because it
had a lot of good points and described in detail how everyone has a chance at life
whether they were born into poverty or not.
d. The writing successes that I’ve had this semester are that my procrastinating skills
have gotten better and I don’t procrastinate as much as I have. My diction has also
grown and my sentence structures. I used to just write and write and write and
would never get to my point fast enough. There are definitely a lot of things that I
would like to change about my writing and that would be my clarity in my writing
and my thesis statements. I believe that with practice and time my thesis
statements will improve. But I will say that I am proud of writing those 6 pages
for the inquiry paper and being able to write the pages freely and without
stopping. I didn’t get writer’s block throughout. The rhetorical appeal that I used
for my inquiry paper was logos….I used a bunch of facts that I’ve found and then
went from there with proving my own opinion based on that specific fact. This
appeal seems to work well for me because it is easier to see and look at other
perspectives before writing about my own.
e. I enjoyed my journey overall in UWRT 1102, because I found this course to be
the most helpful for my writing than all the other English courses that I have
taken even in high school. It helped me really focus on the aspects of my
writing….what I was good at and what I needed more work on. The conflict paper
I wasn’t a real big fan of but it was helpful with argumentation and figuring out
how to write a good argument. I also really enjoyed the inquiry paper because I
got to write about something I was so interested in. Even though it was 6 pages
and long it really helped me to understand what I needed to work on with my
writing and what I was good at. The blog posts and daybook entries were fun to
do and helped also with my progression in writing. I also enjoyed groupwork and
peer workshopping! Getting other students ideas about your writing helps you to
improve. UWRT 1102 was a fun, exciting, and adventurous course!
f. I believe that my writing will help others look at my viewpoint from a different
perspective and then take into consideration what I am saying about a topic.
Maybe others will agree with my arguments in my writing or maybe they will
disagree. I think my arguments in my writing are very strong and can make a
change in the writing world. We all really benefit from other writing and others
viewpoints on different types of writing it just depends on what it is about. But I
enjoyed doing peer workshopping as well as group work because it helped me
look at my writing in a different way and improve on it.
g. I wouldn’t consider myself a writer just yet because there is always more room for
improvement. I would though say that my writing has definitely progressed for
the better throughout the semester. We all start at a bad point in our writing but
the only way to better ourselves is by planning, applying, and improving with
practice. It takes time and practice to be good at anything! I have seen a lot of
progress in my writing from last semester to this one but I do think that I could
better. My procrastination has also gotten a lot better, I just hope it doesn’t go
back to what it was before. Maybe within time and if I write more after this class
then I could possibly become a writer. But for now technically no, I am not a
writer quite yet. Writers develop good thinking skills, they don’t always
procrastinate meaning once they sit down to write they actually write. They plan
out their stories before writing them, and they take all the time they need to make
their story the best.
