University View is YOUR neighborhood. It has a unique history and always been a close community in the heart of Columbus. One of the most unique features of our community is the longevity of the University View Civic Association. (UVCA). For over 70 years, it has existed to celebrate our neighbors and our community with fundraisers, holiday celebrations, parades, newsletters, events and so much more.

It does not happen in a vacuum. Our current group of volunteers and board members have been participating for years. 2020 will be drastically different without new people. Looking to the future, It will require engaged and interested neighbors. It needs fresh ideas, volunteers and commitment in order to continue. Please consider helping the UVCA continue its work. Whether it is volunteering an hour of time during an event or becoming a member of the UVCA, we need your participation. Have a suggestion, idea or concern? Let us know. An engaged neighborhood is BETTER neighborhood. It gives us all a sense of pride. Let’s celebrate it!

Dear University View Neighbors;

In 2017 a structure fire occurred at National Electric Coil. The fire occurred during the day and was noticed by employees. 911 was called and eleven fire department apparatus from multiple jurisdictions responded within eight minutes to contain and extinguish the fire. The first engine (pumper) responded from Columbus Fire Station 25 and was on the scene in under 4 minutes. Due to this quick response the fire damage was very small and no interruption to business occurred. In 2018 a fire was reported on Rhoda in a one-story, single-family residence. Again, eleven fire apparatus responded. The first arrived in under 4 minutes. The fire was contained to the outside of the residence. This rapid response kept the fire from extending further into the structure.

How is this possible when Clinton Township does not operate a full-time station in the University View area?

The Clinton Township Division of Fire has worked diligently to secure Automatic Response Agreements with neighboring fire departments. These agreements allow for shared services between jurisdictions. Fire departments must meet certain criteria to maintain eligibility to participate in Automatic Response Agreements. To maintain eligibility, Clinton Township is required to operate an engine (pumper) and medic unit 24/7 from Station 61 on Cleveland Avenue. By taking part in Automatic Response Agreements the Division has improved the services and safety offered to all residents and businesses of Clinton Township by reducing response times to emergencies in our community. Under Automatic Response Agreements, the closest appropriate apparatus will be dispatched to your emergency, regardless of jurisdiction. There have been improvements in dispatching capabilities that have reduced delays also, such as computer aided dispatching and automatic vehicle locators. The computer system locates and dispatches the closest vehicle to your emergency. All of this combined allows for a four minute or less response time to all residents and businesses of Clinton Township even when Clinton Township equipment is not available to respond.

The residents of the University View community should know that the response times to fires and medical emergencies are better now than ever before. In fact, even when Station 62 is closed the response times to the University View community exceeds national standards. Prior to June 2016 this was not the case. The agreements that allow these improved response times were developed well before June of 2016 and went into effect when the contractual coverage from Upper Arlington ended.

With Automatic Response Agreements in place it was decided to re-open Station 62 with a medic unit. Due to limited staffing and budget constraints it was known from the beginning that Station 62 would experience many days of no-service. When Station 62 is closed it is due to low staffing levels. If staffing falls below seven firefighters total on any given day all personnel are required to staff Station 61 to meet our commitments to Automatic Response Agreements, in this way. Clinton Township firefighters are still working for the safety of all our residents and businesses.

Yours in Safety,

Brian Fraley

Fire Chief, Clinton Township Division of Fire
