Project Downtown
With Ocala Islamic Center
Our friends from the Islamic Center in Ocala have been
running a feeding program for 6 years, feeding up to 80
homeless people in Ocala. Every Sunday from 4:00 p.m.
through 5:00 p.m. they are handing out water, sandwiches,
fruit and snacks. Nelson and I have attended on one
Sunday. This is done in the parking lot behind the court
house. The homeless of Ocala know the Muslim women and
children will be there with food and are lined up by 4 p.m.
These people have the feeding down to a science! Nelson
and I tried to figure out how we could support their program
without trying to take it over. In talking with one of the
Muslim women, she suggested a “hygiene program”.
Toothbrushes, toothpaste, small shampoo, soap,
combs….etc.
We are looking to see if this is a program our congregation
would be willing to support. It would involve donations of
small items (or samples) to be bagged up and handed out. It
would also involve 2-3 people going to the area on Sunday
afternoon to put up a table and hand out the bags. If there is
an interest, good and clean used clothing could also be
looked at. It wouldn’t have to be every Sunday, just when we
have enough to hand out to everyone (a minimum of 80
bags)
This would be an endeavor which would show the area that
not only do we care about the homeless in the area, but that
we stand side by side (in YELLOW shirts) with our Muslim
sisters and brothers.
If you have an interest in this program, please
see Sandy Tortorete or stop by the Social
Justice table which will be set up on Sunday
mornings.
GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER?
(Well, maybe not dinner. More like a continental breakfast and lunch.)
On Saturday, April 8, UUFMC has been invited to host representatives from Unitarian
Universalist congregations from the Florida District of the UUA Southern Region. It’s an honor to
be the hosting congregation, and I am proud of the positive image you’ve projected at the regional
level.
Now we need to strut our stuff. I see that Buildings and Grounds are holding a work day on March
25th. We need all hands on deck to make our great space sparkle! And on April 8th we’ll need folks to
help move tables and chairs, procure and serve food for a continental breakfast, lunch, and 2 snacks.
The event is from 9:30-4:00.
If you like to throw a party, please let me know ([email protected] ~ 941-323-8513).
We’ll need several teams who want to have fun.
Our UUFMC directory is
being updated to include our new
members and to modify others as
needed. If your contact information
(address, email, phone) has
changed in the last few months,
please send the updated
information this week to
[email protected]. Deadline
March 8th.
WELCOME to NEW MEMBERS:
In addition to the 10 new members
that were named last week, we are
pleased to welcome Tom and
Lorraine Connors, Mary Louise
DeWolf, Tom Murphy and Joyce
MacMullen into full membership.
We look forward to them, and the
other new members (18 since
January 1st!), feeling deeply
connected to our Beloved
Congregation. Next orientation

DON’T MISS THIS YEAR’S GA
NEW ORLEANS!
Hi everyone,
Having had the privilege of attending GA for
the first time last year, I would like to invite you
all to seriously consider attending this year.
It is mind-blowing to be in the midst of
thousands of UUs!
It is great to go with a contingent from
UUFMC!
The Ware Lecturer is always outstanding and
this year Bryon Stevenson is the speaker. He
is a greatly admired attorney for his advocacy in
defending people who have been wrongfully
incarcerated and he is also a fabulous speaker.
You will not want to miss this opportunity to
meet and be inspired by him.
This year, GA is as close to Florida as it has
been for several years, and from what I
understand, the next few years will take GA
further away.
I made so many contacts and learned so much
from the lectures and workshops I attended,
that It was worth the somewhat long hours, and
the miles of walking. However, I did not walk …
I rented a scooter which was a blessing for me. I
recommend you do the same if you are
concerned about the physical challenge.
Much more information is in the flyer that is
attached here, but I want to bring to your
attention that RESERVATIONS for rooms
opened on March 1st! So, make up your mind as
soon as possible and make your room
reservation ASAP as well as your reservations
at GA to have the experience of a lifetime!
Looking forward to an exciting time with you at
GA!
Talk to me if you would like to know more.

RESIST & REJOICE
From Tracie:
Beginning Sunday, February 26, there will be a change
to our Joys, Sorrows and Concerns time in worship.
Rev. Janet and Tracie mentioned this during a forum a
few months back and the response was positive and
curious.
You may have noticed the three containers of colored stones on the chancel
table in front of the pulpit. Beginning February 26, during Joys, Sorrows
and Concerns, all who wish to participate will be invited to come forward
silently and choose a stone that represents what they are holding on their
heart:
a Joy (clear stones)
a Concern (lighter blue stones)
or a Sorrow (darker blue stones)
They will then place these stones into the bowl of water on the table,
symbolizing how we are all sharing each other’s concerns in our shared
container of water.
Two LPCA members will be by the table to offer witness and one LPCA
member will act as “legs” for those members who have mobility issues.
You may be asking why this change. The answer is simple. We have many
among us who hold concerns close to their heart that do not affect the
entire congregation and therefore do not warrant a listing in the Care
Book. We want to provide a tangible ritual that allows for all members,
introverts and extroverts, to participate and know they are being held in
community.
There is no need to state what your stone represents. It is simply a way for
all of us to say, “We see you. We love you. And we’re here to
support you."
Mark your calendar
for two upcoming

A reminder that we support two food banks in our area, Community of Gratitude Emergency Food Center in Ocklawaha and the Interfaith food bank in Ocala. In addition to food, there is a cash donation box in the back of the chalice room near the bins used to collect the food. There is always a need for jelly, rice and boxed dinners. Other frequently requested items are toiletries, dish and laundry soap. As always, your contributions are greatly appreciated by these agencies. They are filling such a great need in our area.
