There was 9” of th water on the salt as of May 29 . Each week there has been less and we are going into an extended forecast of dryer and hotter weather! We have also contacted the group that have the salt reserved the week after us. There may be a possibility of coordinating with them or using their time. We will let you know as soon as possible how this is going. Either way we are targeting the 4th of July weekend to make a decision and let you know. We will post on our home page, our facebook page, Monte will post on the forum at Landracing.com and I will either email or call all our entries! Remember World of Speed early entries need to be post marked by July 1st. If you need forms let me know and I will mail them to you. Thank you for sending in your memberships. It makes it a lot easier for us if this is done before you hit the salt. If you renewed prior to May 1st there is a problem with the O’Reilly’s account number on the back of the card. We

World’s Fastest Single Engine Mini-Bikeby Philip York

On August 19, 1974, Philip York of Albuquerque New Mexico set a two-way land speed motorcycle record of 96.618 mph on a 36 inch wheel base mini-bike.

This effort began in 1971 when Philip set the record at 92.867 mph on August 27. Then after destroying six pistons, bending three connecting rods, twisting a crankshaft and the timing of twenty-seven attempts in 1972. 1973 and finally in 1974 the record was set!

The Honda S65 engine displacement was increased from 65 cc to 100 cc (6.1 cubic inches!) using a Powroll Performance piston and stroker kit and burned 92% nitromethane for fuel.

The mini-bike fuel tank had just enough fuel to go the measured mile. Two fuel lines supplied the modified Amal GP float and the modified one-inch Delorto carbureator had a main jet of .118 inch.

The mini-bike began as a Honda Z-50 Mini-Trail. A steering damper and a few gussets stiffened the stock frame. Shaved 8 inch scooter tires and an 189 tooth to 21 tooth final drive ratio allowed the engine to turn at 9000 RPM in the measured mile.

The mini-bike was stoen in 1980 and only the official American Motorcycle Association record and a few photographs taken by Glenn Freudenberger on the record setting day remain.

This unique motorcycle speed record still remains unbroken for over forty years.*****************************************************************

Teague shift gears. Think for a moment of Grumpy Old Men and the long long lakester. There was crazy crazy Mort Strain and his lakester with the tank motor with arguments over who would drive it. If you are old enough you remember the beautiful streamliner from Denver and Bill Kenz and Roy Leslie. And Kugels made history with their 300 mph door slammer. Blown engines and other parts from the Perry Boys and fun Bill Temple. In recent years, tears for Mike Waters and Dana

We want to thank Phil for sending his story in. If any one else is interested please let me know. ***************************************************************Our hearts, prayers and best wishes go to the Bryant Family. They have suffered another loss in Tom. Tom can only be described as keeper of the flame for the Pehrson Bros. Coupe and then returned it. I didn’t feel I knew him well enough to write a memorial. Mary West has stepped in to help. To write about Tom she had to write about the other Salt Flats Racers that have gone to the other side. There have been many others but these are the ones that supported and raced with our group and that we knew best.

THE LITTLE BOYS OF THE SALTby Mary West

We all know many stories about the Little Boys of the Salt. For just a moment think of Carl Heap and the black smoke as he charged down the salt. Nolan White who kept going faster and faster and breaking weak parts. The glory days of Macdonald Pitts and their struggle with 300 mph. The silence as we listened to Al
