nother year has come and gone, they seem to go faster and faster. It has been a chal-lenging year for most everyone. Business has been slow, budgets are down, andeveryone has cinched their belts up to make ends meet.

We work in a great industry, and even though things have been tough for most of us, wecan start the year with a good attitude and move forward to tackle the challenges that face ourown businesses, treat each year as a landscape, and rise up out of dormancy and bloom again.Like many of you, I enjoy taking an empty, weedy area, and turning it into a beautiful land-scape, and then maintaining that landscape. It is challenging sometimes, but the end resultsgive so much beauty and enjoyment to those who utilize it and satisfaction to me. I haveworked in this industry my entire life from sales to maintenance and installations, growingthings never seems to leave your blood. Keeping grass green and healthy, planting and main-taining beautiful trees, flowers and shrubs, it all becomes part of who we are.

The UNLA is here to help you where it can; social networking, educational opportunities,CEUs and certifications are just part of what we offer. So get involved! Come share yourthoughts and ideas with us, sit on a committee to help determine where the UNLA will go inthe future.

Ao my friends and colleagues in the Green Industry, this has been a very interesting andchallenging year for many of us. However, compared to many other states, our industryhas done quite well. Utahan’s continue to demonstrate the importance of the green

industry and landscaping, particularly when it comes to trees, shrubs, flowers, lawns and gar-dens. Hopefully, many of you benefited from that interest and the pride that many peoplehave in Utah and how it looks to those around us. The wet spring seemed to get us behindearly but all things considered it wasn’t as was bad of year as some predicted.

I think that those businesses that provide high quality products and services, and that havea genuine love for the green industry will continue to survive and even thrive. When things gettough it seems that the businesses with good reputations continue to prosper. Obviously goodmanagement strategies and practices coupled with a little luck and common sense goes alongway too. Many of us have found ways to be more efficient which will help us in the future aswell.

Another way to become more productive and become better known is to affiliate yourselfwith good organizations such as the: UNLA. UCFC, APLD, ASLA, ISA and others who serve ourindustry so well. Membership in these Associations lets others know that you and your employ-ers are genuinely interested and concerned about our profession and gives additional credit tobeing a true professional in the industry.

Also being certified and accredited in as many aspects as possible make us more valuableto our employers and customers. I urge everyone to spend some time this year to learn newskills, take a class, attend a seminar, or even read a new book or catalog pertaining to thegreen industry. These organizations usually provide many opportunities to learn new and excit-ing things about our business and industry at virtually low or no cost other than membership.Also getting involved will help you meet new friends and colleagues that have the same inter-ests and ambitions as you and may even land you a new job or career.

I have met so many great and interesting people this year and hope to meet even more inthe years to come. I hope everyone has a very prosperous 2010 season and hope to see youat the Utah Green Conference and Trade Show in January. Please stop by and say hello andkeep those thumbs green.
