Amberley Snyder Keynote Speaker for 2019The Utah Green Conference Committee is pleased to announce their choice for the 2019 Utah Green Industry Conference and Trade Show Keynote speaker.

Amberley Snyder

Amberley was born in California as the second to six children. Am-berley fell in love with horses at a

young age and began barrel racing when her family moved to Utah at her age of 7. She competed in junior rodeos and up into high school, winning multiple titles and awards. Her senior year she finished as the National Little Britches Finals and World All Around Cowgirl. Amberley was also serving as the Utah FFA State President in 2009. In January of 2010, Amberley was involved in a rollover truck accident, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. Eighteen months after that day, with a seatbelt on her saddle, she returned to competing in rodeo. She now competes in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association in the barrel racing. Amberley has earned her place competing amongst professional barrel racers and has won multiple awards with the Cowboy and Cowgirl Hall of Fames. She shares her

story of triumph over tragedy hoping she can motivate others to believe in them-selves and get back on the horse.

Cameron Allcott

Cameron Allcott started with Progressive

Plants when he was 12 years old in 1989. His first duties were weeding, wa-

tering and pruning. Fascinated by plants and the wide variety and behaviors, he wanted to learn about all aspects of the business, from maintenance, shipping, growing and design of outdoor spaces. He left Progressive for a few years to learn more about the Landscaping trade and In-formation Technology. Cameron returned to Progressive Plants in 2012 to help with the post recession woes. After 2 years of sales, Cameron took over the production and growing operation and set a higher standard for plant quality and vigor. Cam-eron also used his previous experience in IT to help facilitate the only online order-ing system with real time inventory and has returned to sales in 2017 help expand sales outside of Utah into Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming and Nevada.

Brent N. Bateman

Brent N. Bateman is the Lead Attorney

in the Utah Office of the Property Rights Ombudsman. He is proud to have the

longest and most confusing job title in state government.

Brent is an alumnus of Brigham Young University and Wayne State Law School in Detroit. Prior to joining the Property Rights Ombudsman office, Brent practiced

land use law in Utah and Michigan, and has represented both land developers and government entities. Even today, Brent remains bewildered as to why they cannot get along better. At the OPRO, Brent and his staff work hard to assist property owners and government entities to understand and follow the law, and to listen to one another for pete’s sake. Brent loves to study land use law, baseball, and Shakespeare, and will discuss them with you anytime.

Cynthia Bee

Cynthia works to translate the

technical nature of landscaping into public friendly messaging as the

Outreach Coordinator for the Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District’s Conserva-tion Garden Park. Whether it’s teaching landscape classes to homeowners or creating digital and social media marketing content, she’s learned how homeowners think about landscaping—and how to influ-ence them. Cynthia earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Landscape Architecture from Utah State University and has spent more than 20 years working in different sectors of the green industry.

Ryan Davis

Ryan Davis received his bachelors

degree in Forestry at Penn State, and his Masters in Forest Science at Utah State Universi-

ty. Ryan currently serves as the Arthropod Diagnostician for the Utah Plant Pest Di-agnostic Lab and has become Extension’s lead for pests of urban and health con-cern in Utah. In addition to diagnosing pest problems, Ryan serves as the School Integrated Pest Management Associate, emphasizing control of urban and medi-cal pests in sensitive environments.

Dianne Farrer, Ph.D.

I was born in Utah and always loved the outdoor and

plants, so I got a lot of degree in college that reflect that. I lived in North

Carolina for almost 12 years and that is where my home is, but living back in Utah is great, especially now that I live close to the San Rafael Swell. I currently teach high school students Floriculture & Greenhouse Management and love being back in the classroom. Now I just need to sink my teeth into some good research and my world will be complete. I have a husband and two daughters and my hobbies are NOT gardening, but hiking, knitting, read-ing, and cooking/baking.

Kent Hartley P.E.

Currently a Prin-cipal at IGES where he has

been employed for over 19 years. Prior to IGES he worked at Kleinfelder for ap-

proximately 7 years after graduating with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Utah State University in Civil and Envi-ronmental Engineering. As an engineer with 26 years of geotechnical engineering experience and 30 years of geotechnical and materials testing field experience, Mr. Hartley’s experience includes a variety of geotechnical design including pavements, foundations, reinforced slopes, soft soil stabilization and retaining walls. Retaining wall engineering experience includes design and analysis of various types of gravity, mechanically stabilized earth (MSE), modular block, soil nail, soldier pile, gabion, wire faced, fabric wrapped and cast-in-place concrete cantilever re-taining walls. He has used various types of geosynthetic materials in the construction industry for structural support and stabi-lization. He is also experienced in field quality control during construction and in the testing of compacted fill materials.

Dennis Hinkamp

Dennis Hinkamp grew up in St.

Louis, MO but has been living I Utah since 1980. He has been involved in all

facets of multimedia at Utah State Univer-sity: magazine writing and photography, instructional video, web development and social media. Most recently his projects include drone photography and mapping, 360 photos/video and virtual tours.

Andrew Hillman

Andrew Hillman is the Northeast regional business developer for DRG. As a senior consulting urban

forester, Mr. Hillman assists landscape architects, municipalities, engineers, developers, universities, and nonprofit organizations to develop and implement community forestry projects, including tree inventories, urban tree canopy assessments, i-Tree analyses, and tree preservation plans. Mr. Hillman also devel-ops management and planting plans that allow communities to maximize ecological and social tree benefits, increase the sustainability of urban areas, and augment green infrastructure. Mr. Hillman has over 30 years of experience in urban forestry. Prior to joining Davey Resource Group, Mr. Hillman was city forester for the City of Ithaca, New York. He previously managed the urban forestry program for Oswego, New York. Mr. Hillman has served for many years on the ANSI A300 Commit-tee, which develops the national tree care performance standards. He is an Inter-national Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist/Municipal Specialist #NY-5282 AM, holds the Society’s Tree Risk Assess-ment Qualification, and is a New Jersey Licensed Tree Expert #607. He is a past president of the Society of Municipal Arborists, Honorary Life Member, and an instructor at the SMA Municipal Forestry Institute. Mr. Hillman is a past president of the New York State Urban Forestry Council, member of the Finger Lakes Land Trust, and volunteers as a biodiversity na-

ture preserve steward. He is a member of the Town of Ulysses, NY Sustainability and Conservation Advisory Committee and the Town’s Climate Smart Community Task Force. Mr. Hillman has a BA in Biology from SUNY Oswego.

Drew Hodge

Drew Hodge is a Water Conservation-

ist in Weber State University’s Energy and Sustainability Office. He received

a Bachelor’s degree in Geography with an environmental emphasis though Weber State University. Drew is also a Registered Storm Water inspector for the state of Utah and the 2017 winner of the Utah Department of Natural Resources Division of Water Resources H20ath water war competition. Drew is currently working on developing WSU’s first Water Master Plan. Drew takes great pride in his work and feels that conserving water, our most precious resource, is of the upmost importance. Outside of work, Drew is an outdoor enthusiast and likes to spend his time hiking, skiing and exploring new places.

Russ Jacobsen

Russ Jacobsen has been involved in the

green industry in the intermountain west for over 40 years. He currently

services clients as an irrigation consultant: providing irrigation design, pumping and delivery system design, central control management, creation of details and specifications, IA audits, system evalua-tions, and water budgeting. Some past opportunities in the green industry have included positions in garden center and greenhouse operation, sales and distribu-tion in irrigation, construction estimating, site development, and municipal grounds maintenance. He also has extensive field

experience in construction of landscapes, irrigation systems, and golf courses. Russ formed his own consulting business, Ja-cobsen Irrigation Design in 2006.

Russ is actively involved in the green industry and water issues on both local and national levels. He was the first pres-ident of the Utah Irrigation Association as a chapter of the Utah Nursery and Landscape Association in 1999. During his tenure, he chaired the committee to develop the document ‘Minimum Stan-dards for Irrigation Design and Installation’, later adopted by the Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District as an integral part of its model landscape ordinance still in use today. This model ordinance now serves Utah municipalities and government agen-cies in adopting conservative and efficient landscape and irrigation ordinances. He served as a UNLA Board member and an Executive Committee member of the UNLA for five years, serving as President of the Association. He’s also been on the green conference committee for many years. He was an appointed member of the Governor’s Water Conservation Team for Utah and served as a member of Salt Lake City’s 2009 and 2011 Water Conser-vation Master Plan Group.

Professionally, Russ is a Utah Certified Landscape Professional (UCLP), a Certi-fied Landscape Irrigation Auditor (CLIA), a Certified Irrigation Designer (CID), a pro-fessional member of the American Society of Irrigation Consultants (ASIC) and an EPA Water Sense Partner.

Brent Q. Mecham, CID, CLWM, CIC, CLIA, CAIS

Industry Development Director Irrigation Association, Fairfax, VA

Helping others learn to use water

resources efficiently in growing and main-taining landscapes or crops is the mission

and passion of Brent Mecham. His career over the years includes being a landscape contractor and a water conservation specialist in Colorado. Those occupations provided him many valuable experiences that has helped him in his current position as the industry development director for the Irrigation Association. He is currently involved in developing irrigation best practices, standards and codes, testing and promoting innovative new products and raising awareness of the value of irrigation in agriculture and managed landscapes. He has co-authored many of the training manuals and books offered by the Irrigation Association. He believes in certification as a way to demonstrate competency and professionalism and is certified as an irrigation designer, auditor, water manager, contractor and agricultural irrigation specialist. Last year he was honored with the Roy Williams Memorial Award from the American Society of Irriga-tion Consultants for his advancement and commitment of the irrigation industry.

Shaun Moser

As the Conser-vation Garden Park Manager

for the Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District, Shaun oversees the main-

tenance and aesthetics of the garden. He also teaches educational classes to the public at the garden and other gardens throughout the state. He holds a Bache-lor of Science in Residential Landscape Design & Construction from Utah State University. He is currently serving on the board of the Utah Nursery and Landscape Association.

Marion Murray

Marion has been the IPM Project

Leader at Utah State University Extension since 2006. She conducts outreach

and research in IPM, including the sea-sonal pest advisories for tree fruits and landscape ornamentals. Prior to coming to USU, she spent 10 years in public horti-culture. She received her Master’s degree in plant pathology from Oregon State University and is originally from North Carolina.

Ty Thorup Nielsen

Ty has been in the greens industry for the

past forty-five years. His first job at age eleven was in land-scape maintenance.

Ty has worked as Urban Forester for three different Cities, Herriman, Provo, and West Jordan. He has worked on Temple Square, and Thanksgiving Point. He also is in his second term as a city councilman for Bluffdale city.

Ty has loved being involved with the UCFC. He has been, Board member, the

Chairman of the Board, President Elect, President, Past President, and Treasurer. Ty has told you many times to get involved yourselves. If you notice how he is trying to keep involved, you may want to know the secret of his success. The UCFC.

He is a consultant for USDA Animal Plant Health and Inspection Services (APHIS) and serves as a voting member for the ANSI Z133 Committee (ASC) His vast field experience leading teams for high profile Utilities, private companies and Government institutions, along with formal accreditation from the International Society of Arboriculture and the Tree Care Industry Association have allowed him to thrive in the field of Ar-boriculture while sharing his passion and advancing the responsible care of trees all over the world.

Department of Land-scape Architecture and Environmental Planning

Jake’s professional career has focused on uniting communities to their surround-ing landscapes through collaborative planning and design efforts. He has worked throughout the intermountain west to envision and implement water-shed planning and restoration projects, natural resource conservation projects, recreation infrastructure, and community economic growth opportunities.

Jake’s research and extension efforts focus on analyzing how the design of communities, infrastructure, and sites affect water quality, quantity, and con-servation at both the site and watershed scale.

Chris Rogers

Chris Rogers is a bureau manager

for Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL).

He oversees the licensing, discipline, and regulation of all the non-medical profes-sions & occupations in Utah, including contractors, plumbers, electricians, funeral directors, burglar alarm agents, building inspectors, court reporters, CPAs, and other professions and certain programs including the Utah Residential Lien Recov-ery Fund.

Chris is a licensed attorney – having been in private practices since 2004 -- as a civil litigation attorney since 2004 until his start at DOPL in 2017. He previously clerked for the Utah Court of Appeals and for the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee in Washington D.C.

In December 2017, Chris finished his term as a city council member for South Jordan City, one of the fastest-growing cities in Salt Lake County.

He is a graduate of the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech Communication and a law degree from the University of Utah College of Law.

Keith Rosser

Keith Rosser, owner, operator & lead designer at Landscape Lighting Pro of Utah, has been professionally

involved in landscape management and development for more than 23 years, of which 100% has been dedicated to landscape lighting since 2002. He has worked with thousands of residential customers throughout Utah & surrounding areas. Keith is also national board mem-ber and attendee of The Lighting Summit. Landscape Lighting Pro of Utah’s entire team of outdoor lighting professionals is committed to continuing education and pursuing the highest standards in landscape lighting. As a Nationally Accred-ited business, Keith has been presented both the “Best Outdoor Living Lighting Award” & “Janet Lennox Moyer Award of Excellence”, given to a designer who has presented “the strongest conceptual lighting design and has created a won-drous outdoor environment.”

Ty Rosser

Since 2003, Ty had the immense pleasure of growing up around lighting design. In 2011, he began

working as a lighting technician and technical installer while pursuing higher education & graduating with multiple degrees. Ty continues to install & work on countless high-end residential outdoor lighting systems. Currently, he designs & creates beautiful outdoor lighting systems at Landscape Lighting Pro of Utah. Ty also manages our Strategic Partnership Program. With our national award-winning designs, we are proud to be one of the nations most dedicated outdoor lighting

specialists. Ty’s unique upbringing in the outdoor lighting industry has left him with a wealth of knowledge about outdoor lighting design & installation.

Cameron Ruppe

Cameron Ruppe is a graduate of

Utah Valley Uni-versity, receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Emergency Ser-

vices Administration with an emphasis in Emergency Medical Care. He also earned a Master of Education from Utah State University. After working several years as an EMT, he began work as a safety profes-sional in the oil and gas industry helping employers and employees to work safely in a historically dangerous line of work. In 2017, he was appointed by Utah Labor Commissioner, Jaceson Maughan, as the Director of UOSH. He currently resides in Lehi with his wife Courtney, of ten years, and their four children: Takoma, Mckinley, Stockton, and Rockwell.

Amanda Strack

Amanda has always had a passion for

the outdoors, and in the last 20 years, specifically with conservation. Her

passion led her to study Residential Land-scape Design and Construction at Utah State University, where she obtained her Bachelor’s degree. Currently the Conser-vation Coordinator for Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District, she is able to use her design and plant knowledge to man-age and create water-wise landscaping programs for water conservation.

Danny Takao

Danny Takao is the President of Takao

Nursery in Fresno CA. They are a Prop-agator of Perennials with an emphasis on

Natives and low water plants shipping to Growers Nationally and Canada. Started in the Los Angeles area in 1960, Takao Nursery is now transitioning to the 3rd generation under the guidance of Lisa Takao Mc Call. Danny also consults for Ellepot USA and Sangreen Greenhouses China.

Danny has served the industry on numerous Board of Directors such as the OFA/American Hort, Florastar, The California Center for Urban Horticulture at UC Davis, HRI and the Western Region

International Propagators Society and will become the President in 2019.

Traveling both Nationally and In-ternationally has given Danny a good perspective of the Propagation Industry. He will share how his Company selects, develops protocols for stock plants, Prop-agation and then the marketing of the plants.

Dr. Todd P. West

Dr. Todd P. West is originally

from Madison, WI. He received his BS degree in Biology from the University

of Wisconsin – Platteville. He received his master’s and doctoral degrees from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Todd is currently a Professor at North Da-kota State University (NDSU) and director of the NDSU Woody Plant Improvement Program. This program focuses on the development of new woody cultivars suit-ed for USDA hardiness zone 3 and 4. The purpose of this project is to increase the breeding efforts and germplasm collec-tions for ornamental woody plants suited

for cold continental climates. This program has developed the largest woody plant germplasm collection in the Northern Great Plains comprising of over 60 acres (~24 hectares) located at the NDSU Hor-ticulture Research Farm/Dale E. Herman Research Arboretum near Absaraka, ND. This program has released 57 ornamental woody plants to the nursery industry, many of which have been shown to be the hardiest selections of their type in the commercial nursery industry.

Adrea Wheaton

Adrea Wheaton is the program coordinator

for USU’s Center for Water Efficient Landscaping. After getting her under-

grad degree in landscape architecture at University of California at Davis, she went to work for a firm in England for several years. Moving back to her native Utah, the stark contrast of the arid environment made her want to focus on water-wise landscapes. At Utah State University, she finished the Masters of Professional Studies in Horticulture degree with an emphasis on water conservation in the landscape. A plant geek by nature, she enjoys all things horticulture.
