What is ?Nu-span is a high performance, precast,insulated slab system for application in theconstruction of suspended ground floors indwellings and smaller-scale commercialbuildings. It is manufactured in precision made steel moulds to stringent quality standards. The composite unit comprises structural grade reinforced concrete bonded to high performance expanded polystyrene (EPS).

Nu-span was developed to meet the nextgeneration of building regulations and canachieve U-Values as low as 0.08 W/m2Kdepending on the perimeter/area ratio andinsulating material chosen. This allows the

Why use ?Thermal Performance

- The Unit provides a continuous unbroken layer of EPS material across the entire floor achieving U-values as low as

0.08 W/m2K.

- A significant reduction in cold bridging is also achieved resulting in attractive Psi (ψ) values as demonstrated in the

technical data sheets.

- A choice of insulating material is available (type and thickness) to help achieve maximum thermal performance and energy rating for any building and assist in meeting the required specification.

- “Built-in” benefits with maintenance free high U-values through an essential element of the building fabric achieving increasing standards required by Building Regulations.

- Concrete is one of the most versatile, durable and cost effective building materials available. It is also environmentally sustainable with green credentials that outperform both steel and timber and, when combined with EPS, offers a floor system that significantly reduces the carbon footprint of any construction. This is recognised by a BREAMM rating of A+.

Composite UnitThe Nu-span Unit combines the three essential elements of any suspended ground floor: the structural element, the insulation and the screed.

This arrives on site as one factory made unit with the following benefits:

- No on-site storage issues for either insulation or the other components providing both a practical and an environmental benefit;

- The insulation element is fitted to the Nu-span Unit in the factory thus removing the performance risk associated with the manual fitting of insulation materials on site (Actual performance in this regard is likely to be an increasing area of focus in forthcoming building regulations);

- No further screed is required when using a timber batten floor and only a self-levelling compound is required for other finishes when using NS30 and NS38 Units.

Efficient & Cost Effective- Installation is carried out by experienced

erection crews. Up to 400m2 per day can be safely installed leaving an immediate safe working platform for follow-on trades.

- CDM Compliance - The use of Nu-span designs out the risks associated with manual handling, trips, slips and falls thus considerably improving on-site Health & Safety. The Units are installed by experienced and certified erection crews.

- No on-site material waste with associated cost benefits and reduced storage requirements.

- All-weather construction – fitting is not restricted by adverse weather conditions.

building designer greater flexibility whenspecifying other elements of the building inorder to achieve the required Target Emissions Rating (TER) or to achieve highly energy efficient buildings.

Nu-span is the ideal solution for suspendedground floor levels in domestic housing andsmaller scale commercial buildings,particularly where customers are seeking athermally efficient method of construction. Atthe same time, due to the off-sitemanufacturing process, Nu-span provides fast on-site construction allowing the follow-on trades to get on site in as little as three hours for a typical detached house.

Nu-span NS30 and NS38 Units offer excellent thermal performance which is provided bybonding EPS material to the underside of the precast unit.

As well as offering excellent insulating properties, and extensively reducing cold bridging, the advanced design and material composition of the system makes a positive contribution to the reduction in CO2 by decreasing the amount of fossil fuel required to heat the building.

The thermal performance of each project is assessed in accordance with EN ISO 13370:1998 to ensure compliance. In addition:• U- Values as low as 0.08 W/m2K can be achieved depending on the P/A ratio;• Substantial thermal mass;• A significant reduction in thermal bridging is achieved;• The Nu-span Technical Team is available from design stage to discuss advantages and

application of the Nu-span floor system; and• A choice of products is available depending on your budget and requirements.

Thermal comparison with traditional solutionsForming suspended ground floors with conventional T-Beam and Block construction methods makes it difficult to achieve the high standards of thermal performance necessary to comply with Building Regulations. Some improvement in performance is possible by replacing the concrete blocks with EPS insulation units which are specifically shaped to make contact beneath the beams with an aim of providing a continuous layer of insulation.

However, even slight irregularities in setting-out can result in breaks in the insulation layer,leading to air movement around the units and increased heat loss. In addition, the perimeterof such systems is generally formed with concrete blocks with only a thin layer of insulation fixed beneath. This inevitably downgrades the performance of the complete floor.

Thermal EfficiencyJunctions The stringent requirements for energy efficient buildings means designers must consider not only heat loss which occurs through building elements (expressed by their U-values) but also the heat loss which occurs at the junctions between building elements, such as the wall-floor junction.

One of the key factors in minimising heat loss at junctions is ensuring continuity of insulation at the junction. This is difficult with conventional suspended floor constructions, as the floor insulation stops at the internal face of the wall and the insulation is often in the wall cavity.

Nu-span NS30 and NS38 Units reduce heat loss at the wall-floor junction. Because the units bear on the inner leaf of cavity walls, the insulation extends beyond the floor to the face of the wall cavity. The insulation within the cavity then butts that on the Nu-span Unit to give continuous insulation across the junction.

The Advantage• Nu-span NS30 and NS38 maximise the thermal performance of

ground floors by forming a deep, unbroken layer of insulation across the entire floor;

• The design of Nu-span NS30 and NS38 Units minimises the thermal bridging effect of the structural concrete to give a high thermal resistance for the suspended floor;

• Within the NS30 and NS38 units the structural concrete is cast onto the insulation, avoiding air gaps and therefore minimising heat loss by air movement;

• The insulation on each Nu-span NS30 or NS38 Unit is continuous and the Units are butted with their insulation layers tight together, thus avoiding gaps in the insulation layer; and

• Nu-span NS30 and NS38 Units cover the entire floor area, providing the same performance across the entire floor.

ConcreteConcrete is one of the most versatile, durable and cost effective building materials available. It is also environmentally sustainable with green credentials that outperform both steel and timber and, when combined with EPS, offers a floor system that helps reduce the building’s carbon footprint.

EPSThe energy used in the production of EPS (embodied energy) is saved many times over throughout the life of the building in which it is installed. Initial recovery is estimated to be within the first 15 years, thus reducing your dwelling’s carbon footprint.

The green credentials of EPS are unsurpassed.

- Zero Ozone Depletion Potential (“ODP”) as the blowing agent used in the expansion process is Pentane which does not affect the Ozone layer;

- Zero Global Warming Potential (“GWP”) – 1 credit score towards the

overall code level rating;- Green guide summary rating of ‘A+’;- Credit score of 3 for the floor element in

the code for Sustainable Homes;- CFC and HCFC free;- 98% air;- Contains recycled material;- Fully recyclable

EnvironmentalFire ResistanceThere are no fire resistance requirements needed when the Nu-span system is used on the ground floor of domestic houses.

DurabilityNu-span Units are dimensionally stable, resistant to attack from rodents (it has no nutritional value), bacteria, mould and fungi and have a lifespan comparable to that of the building. EPS insulation is a non-irritant and is non-toxic.

OperationNu-span manages its business in order to minimise its impact on the environment in accordance with the ISO 14001 Quality Management Standard.

Responsible SourcingNu-span is committed to providing products which have the lowest carbon footprint achievable. To this end the Company has structured its raw material supply arrangements to assist in this goal.

The concrete utilised in the manufacture of Nu-span products is manufactured on-site by a supplier which conforms to the following standards:

- Environmental Management System - ISO14001:2004

- BES 6001 – Framework Standard for the Responsible Sourcing of

Construction Products• The EPS supplier conforms to the

following standards: - Environmental Management System -

ISO14001:2004

In addition, the Nu-span product itself generates no waste on-site, and is efficient to transport and install as its design facilitates transporting and off-loading from the same lorry, normally with no requirement for additional material handling equipment.

Surplus Raw Material RecyclingNu-span is committed to ensuring that any raw material which is surplus to its production process is managed in an environmentally sensitive manner. In this regard the Company has the following initiatives in place:

• All surplus concrete product is fully recycled through a dedicated recycling plant on-site.

• All surplus EPS insulation is returned to the supplier and is fully recycled.

• All surplus steel is collected by a local licenced recycling agent.

Ground Floor- Design Considerations

Floor finishes Various options are available for floor finishes;

a. Nominal self-levelling compound

b. 40-75mm sand/cement screed

c. 40-75mm flo-screed over underfloor heating pipes

d. 50-100mm structural screed- if required to accommodate specific loading requirements.

Ventilation To help minimise the risk of condensation, a void space should be maintained between the lowest point of the floor and ground to a depth of at least 150 mm.

Provision for adequate through ventilation, in the form of ventilation openings should be provided in two opposing external walls. The ventilation openings should be sized at not less than 1500mm²/m run of external wall or 500 mm²/m² of floor area, whichever is greater.

Where pipes are used to carry ventilating air, these should be at least 100 mm diameter.

Service openings Service penetrations for water inlet, waste drainage, gas pipes and other services can be easily accommodated within the ground floor slabs.

All service openings are formed during manufacture and their position/sizes must be agreed at design stage. Standard opening sizes are 200mm x 200mm square, although larger openings can be accommodated by consulting our technical department.

Openings cannot be accommodated within the reinforced rib of the unit (where this is necessary please consult the technical department to discuss an alternative solution).DPM to architects specification.

Bearing details Nu-span Units require 100mm end bearing on masonry walls. In order to provide the best thermal performance we recommend that all units’ side-bear onto the inner leaf of the cavity wall running parallel to span.

We recommend that supporting foundation block work has a compressive strength of 7N/mm².

Partition Walls Nu-span Units can accommodate non-load bearing stud and block partitions built directly off the slab provided these have been allowed for at design stage and detailed on our CAD layout drawings. Additional loadings can be accommodated by applying a structural screed.

Non-screeded RangeNu-span also manufactures all of its insulated product range with a high-spec surface finish in order to give customers a choice as to the application/non-application of a finishing screed. As the Nu-span floor system is not pre-stressed, units do not have the upward camber associated with floors constructed using the T-Beam method, thus allowing the use of minimal-depth self-levelling compound.

With an improved surface finish and negligible design deflection, the Nu-span non-screeded range of floor units demands only the minimum depth of levelling compound prior to direct placing of carpet, floor-tiles, wooden floors or vinyl. Significant cost savings can be achieved by eliminating the need for a conventional screed.

Our technical department will be pleased to deal with any queries or advice you may seek regarding these products and the additional considerations we give to the installation of same.
