Getting Started WELCOME TO WATER TREATMENT PLANT DESIGN SOFTWARE WTPSOFT02

INTRODUCTION:

Municipal water supply systems can be divided into 1. Collection Works, 2.

Transmission Works, 3. Purification Works and 4. Distribution Works. This

software deals with purification works or water treatment plants. The water

collected directly from the source may not be safe for drinking because of

physical, chemical and biological impurities. The municipal water works must

deliver to consumer the water that is (i) hygienically safe (ii) esthetically

attractive and palatable and (iii) economically satisfactory for its intended use.

Diseases like typhoid, cholera, dysentery etc. are water borne diseases. The

principal aim of the water treatment plant is to supply, clean and bacteria free

water. The water treatment plants can be broadly divided in two categories:

(i) Conventional or Filtration Plants: They remove objectionable colours,

turbidity, bacteria, and other harmful organisms.

(i i) Advanced Water Treatment Plants : These can remove dissolved inorganic

salts like chlorides, sulphates, hardness causing ions of calcium and

magnesium, excessive amounts of iron and manganese.

WTP02 software is developed for the design of conventional water treatment plant.

2.0 APPLICATIONS OF W.T.P. DESIGN SOFTWARE: -

The procedure of design of water treatment plant involved performing

repetitive calculations, which take considerable time and energy, and there are

chances of human errors. All this can be avoided by using the software for

designing the water Treatment Plant. The WTP02 Design Software can be used as

a tool in the hands of Design Engineer. It gives the dimensions of various units of

the treatment plant and their power requirement. The work of construction and

maintenance of water supply and wastewater disposal systems is generally

undertaken by Government agencies – mostly through Public Health Engineering

or Environmental Engineering Departments consisting of Civil Engineers. These

Departments appoint contractors for the construction of W.T.P. Many times these

contracting firms have to submit their design. Engineers from these firms can use

this software for speedy design of WTP. In the early stages of the project, the

draft project report outlining the design of water treatment plant is required to be

submitted quickly. This software can be of great use for this. Agencies such as

industries, public sector organizations appoint consultants for the design of WTP.

Engineers from these consulting organizations can use this software to increase

the productivity and profitabili ty. Academic institutions can also use this

software for teaching the students the approach for the design of WTP and also

for their consultancy cell.

Creating New Project Or Opening Earlier Project Before Designing It’s Module: 1.1Creating New Project:- 1. Click Project New /Open Project on the Standard Menu Bar Following Screen will appeared. Click ADD NEW Button on the form To Create New Project

1.2 After Pressing Add New Button Project Code Will Be Auto Generated in the Project Code Text Box, The List Of Exiting Client Records Will Appeared As Follows Select Clint Name By Double Clicking Or Pressing Enter.

1.3 Enter Project Date In DD/MM/YYYY Format Or Press … Button Which Is Next To Text Box For The Calendar. Select Date By Double Clicking On It.

1.4 Select Project Type From The List And Enter Other Project Details i.e. Flow Rate,BOD5,Peak Flow Factor etc., Press SAVE Button For Saving Record, If Record Is Saved Then SAVE DATA Massage Box Will Appear.

1.5 After Pressing OK Button Of SAVE DATA Massage Box, SAVE Button Will Changes To OPEN Button. And Another Massage Box Will Appeared. Which Will Help You To Open This Project For Designing It’s Other Modules.

1.2 Opening Project Which Are Created Earlier:-

1.1 If You Want To Open Project Which Are Created Earlier Click On Project Code Text Box. The List Of Exiting Records Will Appears As Follows Select Record Which You Want To Open By Double Clicking Or Pressing Enter

After Pressing OK Button Of SAVE DATA Massage Box,

Hydraulic Designing Of New Spray Aerator Or Modifying Which Are Designed Earlier: 2.1 Hydraulic Designing Of New Spray Aerator :- 2.1 Click Hydraulic Calculation Aerators Spray Aerator on the Standard Menu Bar. This option will enable only after opening any Project .Then following Screen will appeared. Click ADD NEW Button on the form To Design New Screen

2.2 after pressing ADD NEW button Aerator No. Will be Auto Generated in the Aerator No. Textbox. Then cursor will move in to Area Req. field, enter value for this field. If you trying to leave this field empty or if you enter high or low value then standard value, the massage box will appear by showing acceptable values for that particular field. Press YES to load default value, and NO to cont. This is applicable to all the fields shown on the form.

3.1 Modifying Spray Aerator Which Are Designed Earlier: 3.1 If You Want To Modify Exiting Record of Spray Aerator Which Are Designed Earlier Then Click In To Aerator No Text Box. The List Of Exiting Records of Screen Which Are Designed Earlier Will Appear As Follows. Select Record Which You Want To Modify By Double Clicking Or Pressing Enter. 3.2 Record of Screen Which Are Designed Earlier Is Now Displayed In To Appropriate Text Boxes. Make Necessary Changes And Then Once Again Press Hydraulic Design Button For Fresh Output. After Desired Output i.e. Hydraulic Designing Parameters of the Screen. Press UPDATE Button For Saving Updated Record.

If You Want To Modify Exiting Record Then Click In To Screen No Text Box. The List Of Exiting Records Will Appears As Follows Select Record Which You Want To Modify By Double Clicking

3.3 The Change In Record of Spray Aerator Which Are Designed Earlier Is Saved And UPDATE DATA Message Box Will Appear. Now You Can Add New Record, Modify Exiting Record Or Exit From This Module. SAME PROCEDURE WILL APPLY FOR MODIFYING MODULES WHICH ARE DESINED EARLIER IN THIS ENTIRE PROGRAM.

DESIGN OF INDIVIDUAL UNITS: AERATOR : This is used to get rid of odour producing gases. Three types of aerators can be designed.

i) WATERFALL AERATORS: This is most commonly used.

The design criteria are as follows: -

Area of Aerator: 0.015 to 0.045 M2 / M3 / hr.

Height of Structure: 1.2m to 3 m.

Number of Steps: 4 to 6

Output gives diameter of the cascade.

(ii)SPRAY AERATORS:

Dia. of nozzles: 2.4 to 4 cm.

Time of Exposure: 2.4 seconds

(iii) DIFFURED AIR AERATORS:

Width to depth ratio of basin 1.5

Detention time of basin: 8 to 30 min. Typical: 15 min.

Air required: 0.4 to 1.2 lit of air per lit . of water.

FLASH MIXER:

Flash Mixer is designed on the basis of detention period. The output gives the dimensions of flash mixer as well as paddles. Power rating of the agitator is also given. The value of velocity gradient (G) is checked for adequacy.

FLOCCULATOR:

It is assumed that the flocculator is placed at the center of circular clarifier. This is also designed on the basis of detention period. Size of the paddles is designed so as to give satisfactory value of velocity gradient (G) and Gtd.

CLARIFIER: Clarifier is designed on the basis of overflow rate. The software gives dimensions of the clarifier and checks for the detention period and weir loading.

CHEMICAL STORAGE: The user is prompted to input the alum dose for the worst season (monsoon). The software gives the area of the room required to store the alum for the period of three months for the worst season.

FILTER:

Filter is one of the important units of the water treatment plant. This software designs the rapid sand filter, which is used in most of the plants, as well as slow sand filter. The design is based on the rate of filtration. The software gives the number of filters, area of each filter, volume of backwash water tank and the design of wash water troughs as the output.

The details of sand bed such as depth, effective size and uniformity coefficient along with gravel depth are given.

CHLORINE REQUIREMENT: The software gives number of Chlorine cylinders required. It is assumed that chlorinator is used. A 50 Kg cylinder is suggested for the actual requirement of 16 Kg.

UNDERGROUND CLEAR WATER RESERVOIR: Output gives the volume of clear water reservoir. The detention period varies depending on the hours of pumping. It can be as less as 30 minutes if the pumps work for 24 hours. It can be increased up to 2.5 h if pumping is done for lesser period.

PUMPS AND PUMPING MAIN: The software gives most economical diameter for pumping main, along with the total capacity of pumps required and number of pumps required. User is asked to enter length of pumping main as well as current cost of some units like pumps and cost of electricity.

4. Report Printing 4.1 If You Want To print Exiting Record of Spray Aerator Which Are Designed Earlier Then Click In To Aerator No Text Box. The List Of Exiting Records of Screen Which Are Designed Earlier Will Appear As Follows. Select Record Which You Want To print and then Click Print 4.2 After Clicking Print Button. Following screen will appeared. Select Module Name & Click on Preview Button.

Printable Report Will Appear for

Preview.

Press Print Button For

Report Printing.

After Slecting record, Click Print Button.

Select Design No. by Clicking on list box.

Record will displayed on screen.
