1.3 Intended use
SMH Negative Pressure Units are portable/transportable NPUs incorporating HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters covered by BS EN 1822 for use in the controlled removal of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs). They are designed to create negative pressure within a portable decontamination unit facility or working enclosure.
Please note, local regulations may demand a different set-up.

2. Safety information This section provides a summary of all the safety information provided throughout the user guide.
⚠ Power Rating. The NPUs are supplied in 110v or 230v models. Correct connection of a power supply that provides voltage and current within the specified rating of the system. Use of an incompatible power supply could result in electric shock or fire hazards.
⚠ Electrical Grounding. The NPU has been designed for use with electrical supplies that incorporates a functional earth. Do not connect to a supply that does not have a functional earth facility.
⚠ Internal Voltage. Always turn off the NPU and disconnect the power cord prior to any service, maintenance or cleaning or when not in use.
⚠ Asbestos Exposure. Never remove filters in a non-controlled environment and always use a respirator and appropriate PPE.
⚠ Heavy Equipment. Some of the equipment is extremely heavy to li.
⚠
PLEASE NOTE: The use of ancillary items such as roving filter heads and/or exhaust ducts can significantly reduce airflow through the NPU. RR988 HSL Research Project – The addition of flexible ducting reduced the volume airflow rate by approx. 1% per metre of ducting and by 2% for a 90deg bend. Based on ducting of 355mm diameter being used and thus significantly reduce the amount of negative pressure achieved within the working enclosure. The accurate monitoring of the negative pressure within the enclosure can only be achieved using an external monitoring device – the manometer fitted to the NPU is not an indicator of negative pressure within the enclosure. You may require additional NPUs to mitigate any shortfalls in performance.
⚠ All personnel engaged in decontamination must follow the health and safety protocols described in the current legislation and guidance.
⚠ The NPU is to be operated under the supervision of competent and trained operators. NOTE Attention is drawn to the Control of Asbestos Regulations, Regulation 13 [1], [2]. It should only be used when provided with an in-date DOP and electrical test certificate. The NPU should not be le running unattended at any time.
⚠ Filters should be changed under controlled conditions by a qualified, competent person wearing full PPE and RPE. Filters must be disposed of in accordance with local regulations for the removal of asbestos-containing materials and within any site-specific method statements.
⚠ The NPU must be examined and serviced in accordance with UK legislation and the approved code of practice, at least once every six months by an SMH branch or recommended service centre. NPUs sold outside of the UK must be examined and serviced at least once every 12 months and in accordance with local regulations and approved codes of practice.

4. Standard Operating Procedures The purpose of the SMH negative pressure unit standard operating procedure is to provide guidance for the correct and safe method of use of the units.
Please note, all photographs are indicative only – individual units may differ. If in any doubt, please contact your local SMH branch.
4.1 Transport of the unit
Care should be taken when transporting an NPU. NPUs should be assessed before attempting to li them from a van or working area. Secure liing handles are ergonomically positioned to assist when liing NPUs.
Ensure the NPU is securely located before transporting. The NPU must only be transported in a decontaminated state.
Ensure that the transit cover plate is fitted securely to protect and seal the pre-filter during transit.
Handle the NPU with due care and attention, and avoid manhandling while in operation.
4.2 Operation of the unit The unit must be placed on a hardened, vibration-free floor. The unit should be used indoors and kept dry and within a temperature range of +5°C to +40°C.
4.2.1 Running the unit
The NPU will require a 110v or 230v 16amp power supply. Extend the NPU supply cable to the power outlet and plug in the supply plug to the mains outlet.
9 /17
www. smh products.com
With the cover plate attached, turn on the NPU using the rocker switch located on the NPU body. Remove the cover plate when the unit is running to prevent possible fibre release.
Remove the cover plate by unclipping the NPU over centre clips. If necessary switch off the NPU to reduce the suction on the pressure plate. Remove the plate and turn the NPU back on.
Ensure that a clean pre-filter is fitted to the NPU and that it has been taped into place.
Check that the manometer reading on the unit is within its safe operating pressure. The manometer is colour coded to indicate its safe working pressure.
The NPU can now be attached to an enclosure wall and can be fitted with ducting to extract to atmosphere wherever possible. The option is also available to add a spigot and roving filter box to control fibres at source.
When the NPU has been installed, ensure that the brakes are applied on the castors of the NPU to help prevent any movement.
10 /17
www. smh products.com
4.2.2 Using Roving Filter boxes
⚠ The use of ancillary items such as roving heads or exhaust ducts can significantly reduce the airflow through an NPU, which in turn will reduce the negative pressure within the enclosure. RR988 HSL Research project estimates a 1% drop in volume airflow rate for each metre of 355mm ducting used.
If you are using a spigot plate with room for an additional prefilter, the prefilter can be fitted into the spigot plate as fitted into the NPU pre-filter plate (see 5.2.1 Procedure for changing NPU pre-filters).
Attach the flexible ducting using a suitable clip or tape to secure it to the spigot plate/box.
To attach ducting to the NPU, attach the NPU spigot plate to the NPU using its original strikes and over centre clips or by using PCL tape. Pre-filter should be installed into the roving head filter housing – we do not advise using 2 pre-filters.
4.3 Shut down of the unit
✓ Following the correct procedure is not only important to ensure the safe shutdown of your unit – it will also extend the life of your unit, avoiding unnecessary damage and potentially costly repairs.
4.3.1 Procedure for shutting down the NPU
Before an NPU is removed from the enclosure, ensure that a clean pre-filter has been fitted.
Seal the NPU using the transit cover plate to prevent fibre release during transportation.
Switch off and unplug the unit.
11 /17
www. smh products.com
4.3.2 Storage of the unit
Avoid extremes of temperature, damp conditions and/or dusty conditions. The unit must be stored only in a decontaminated state.
4.3.3 Return of the unit aer rental
NPUs must be returned clean and free from any dust or debris, in a decontaminated state, i.e. with a clean pre-filter fitted, and without damage.
Any customer returning a unit in an unsuitable state as deemed by the receiving SMH branch will be liable to additional charges.
12 /17

5. Maintenance of the unit ⚠ The following maintenance procedures and advice for the procedures must be followed to ensure that the
unit is kept in good working order.
5.1 Regular inspections
5.1.1 Pre-use checks Visual checks of electrical equipment for obvious defects should be carried out before each use.
5.1.2 Daily checks
■ Inspection and testing of electrical equipment should be done ■ Inspection, testing and, where required, replacement of HEPA filter ■ Inspection and maintenance of casings/fittings
5.1.3 Weekly checks
Every week, users should conduct a thorough visual check and inspection of all electrical equipment for damage or wear and tear.
5.2 Maintenance
5.2.1 Procedure for changing NPU pre-filters
⚠ Filters should be changed under controlled conditions by a qualified, competent person wearing full PPE and RPE. Filters must be disposed of in accordance with local regulations for the removal of asbestos-containing materials and within any site-specific method statements.
Pre-filters should be changed regularly and only under controlled conditions.
13 /17
www. smh products.com
When taped to an enclosure, cut the pre-filter out of the NPU. Fit a new pre-filter into the NPU and seal it with PCL tape.
Place the dirty pre-filter in a red asbestos bag and follow your company procedures to dispose of asbestos containing materials.
Before an NPU is removed from the enclosure, ensure that a clean pre-filter has been fitted.
Seal the NPU using the transit cover plate to prevent fibre release during transport.
14 /17
