• “Richard Behringer and colleagues performed a study” should read “Behringer et al. (1988) performed …”

• no initials in text citation, e.g. “Behringer U. (1998) showed that”

• no extraneous info in references, e.g. “PhD, Dphil”, or “and colleagues” (give all authors names in Bibliography)

• upper case not needed for journal titles; use lower case throughout

• “et al.” = abbreviation `et alii' (masculine plural) or `et aliae' (feminine plural) so it needs a period

• Genus names are capitalised, species names are lower case, e.g. Crocuta crocuta, Drosophila

• Clear title?

• Clear statement of objectives/plans/structure? “ In this paper I will describe X. Specifically, I will first review Y and then I will describe the background to Z. Next I will compare A and B. Finally, I will integrate and suggest some future directions for research ”
