PROGRAMSOFSTUDY
Thefollowinginformationisintendedtohelpstudentsplantheirprogramofstudy.ItprovidesasupplementtotheUniversityCatalog,whichistheofficialstatementofallUniversitydegreerequirements.IftheprogramdescriptionshoulddisagreewithinformationpresentedinTheUniversityofRhodeIslandCatalog,thestudentistoconsidertheCatalogasthefinalauthoritativesource.DEGREEPROGRAMSTheDepartmentofMusicoffersthefollowingdegreeprograms:
1. BachelorofMusicwithoptionsinperformance,musiceducation,andcomposition.Performanceemphasiscanbeinclassicalguitar,voice,piano,organ,percussion,saxophone,harp,inallorchestralstring,woodwindandbrassinstruments,andjazz(saxophone,trumpet,piano,guitar,stringbass,anddrumset).
2. BachelorofArtsinMusicwithoptionsinmusic,jazzstudiesormusichistoryandliterature.3. MasterofMusicwithoptionsinmusiceducation(withareasofconcentrationinconducting,
performance/essay,composition,andresearch/thesis)ormusicperformance(withareasofconcentrationinclassicalguitar,voice,piano,organ,percussion,saxophone,harp,allorchestralstring,woodwindandbrassinstruments,compositionandconducting).
MinorsinMusicareofferedwithfourareasofconcentration:
a. MusicMinor–21-22creditsandgivesstudentsabroad-basedbackgroundinmusic.CourseworkinthisoptionissimilartothattakenbystudentsstartingworktowardaB.A.orB.M.degreeinmusic.
b. MusicPerformanceMinor–19-21creditsandgivesstudentstheopportunityforamoreconcentratedstudyinvoiceoronaninstrument.
c. JazzStudiesMinor–19creditsandoffersstudentsconcentratedstudyinjazzandmusiccourses.d. IndividualMusicMinor–18creditsandgivesstudentsmoreflexibility.Inthisoption,studentsdesigntheir
minorprogramundertheadvisementandsponsorshipofafacultymember.

6.PLANRECITALJURY.StudyandfollowtheRecitalWorksheetlocatedintheAppendix.Thejurycommitteeincludesyourteacher(i.e.,yourFacultySponsor)andtwomusicfacultymembers:oneofthethreemusthavefull-timestatus.Priorityistobegiventothosefacultymembersmostcloselyrelatedtoyourareaofperformingexpertise.Askthefacultymembersyouselectiftheywillserveonyourjuryandwhentheyareavailable.Facultyschedules,keptintheMusicOffice,mayhelpyouidentifyavailablefaculty.Setajurytimeandplaceafteryouhavedeterminedseveralpossibletimesforyou,ouraccompanist,otherperformers,andallofyourjurors.ThejuryshouldbegivenintheConcertHall.Checkthehallscheduleonsakai/modulesandrequestatimethroughtheform,alsoonsakai/modules,andifyourjuryisonaTuesdayduringthecommonfreeperiod,youmustregisterwiththeFacilitiesCoordinator/ConcertHallManager.AnytimeforajuryotherthanTuesdayscanberequestedviae-mailthroughusingsakaiordirectlye-mailingtheFacilitiesCoordinator/ConcerthallManager.7.RECITALPROGRAM.StudentsareresponsiblefordesigningtheirRecitalProgramusingtheDepartmenttemplate(availableintheMusicOffice)withguidancefromtheirappliedteacher.Youareresponsibleforthepurchaseandselectionofthepaperforyourprogram.

Failuretofollowtheaboveproceduresmaybegroundsforpostponingtherecital.8.RECITAL JURY.Fourweeksbefore the recitaldate,performyourprogramforyour jurycommitteeon thedateyouhavearranged.Bring copiesof theprogram for each jurymember. Compositionmajors follow theaboveprocedureswith the exception that you must select one of the following two options: (a) four weeks before the recital date,performtwo-thirdsofyourprogram(withpresentationofscores,partsandapersonnellistfortheentireprogram),or(b)twoweeksbeforetherecitaldate,performtheentireprogram(withpresentationofscores,partsandapersonnellistfortheentireprogram).Compositionstudentswhochooseoption(b)mustsubmittheirfinishedprogrambyemailtotheircompositionteacherbythedateofthejury.CompositionteachersemailthefinalversionoftheprogramtotheMusicOfficenolaterthantheMondaybeforetherecital.9. FACILITIES. Assoonasthejuryhasbeenpassed,reconfirmyourrecitaldateandnecessaryarrangementswiththeCoordinatorofFacilities.TheCoordinatororConcertManagerwillmakearrangementsasneededforastagemanagerandusher,andforsomeonetotapeyourrecital.Atthistimeyoumustknowyourstageset-upandanynon-standardequipmentthatyouwillneed.10.PIANOTUNING.ThescheduleforthetuningsofrecitalpianosisdeterminedinadvancebytheFacilitiesCoordinatorandtheDepartmentalPianoTechniciantoprovidethebestpossiblemusical resultwithina limitedbudgetduringthe
courseofeachsemester.Anystudentrequiringatuningofapiano(orharpsichord)outsideofthatschedulemustmakearrangements with the Facilities Coordinator twomonths prior to the event. The student will agree to pay for theservicesoftheDepartmentalPianoTechnician.PaymentwillbemadedirectlytotheMusicDepartmentfortheamountof$95.00.11.REHEARSALS. If youwish to rehearse in theConcertHall, contact theFacilitiesCoordinator foravailable timesatleastaweekbeforeyourproposeduse.Whenyouarefinished,followanydirectionsgivenforthewayyouaretoleavethestage.Lockalldoorsandturnoffalllightswhenyouleave.12.USHERS.UsheringispartoftherequirementsforMUS300(MusicConvocation),andthereforeyourrecitalmayhaveaMUS300studentassignedasanusher. PleasechecktheUsherSign-upsheetintheMusicResourceCentertoseeifyouhaveanyushersforyourevent.Ifyouhavenoassignedushers,thencontacttheConcertManagertolethimknowthatMusicStaffusherswillbeneeded.13.CONCERTHALLACCESSCARD.MakesurethatyouoryourFacultySponsorhaveanaccesscardtoopentheConcertHall,andakeytothepiano,unlessyourstagemanagerishandlingthisforyou.14.SECURITY.Aftertheprogram,thestagemanagerwillchecktomakesurethatalldoorsintheConcertHallandanyother roomsyouuseare lockedandall lights areout. Leave the stage, the receptionarea, andall other areasusedduringyourrecital,neatandclean.Putallchairs,stands,andotherequipmentintheirdesignatedplaces.15. RESCHEDULING. Ifyouneedtocancelorreschedulearecital,youmustgettheapprovalofyourappliedteacher,andattheearliestpossibleopportunity,youmustcontacttheFacilitiesCoordinator.Pleasemakesureallappropriatepeople involved in your event, such as accompanists and/or other assistingmusicians and the ConcertManager, arenotifiedofanychanges.TheConcertManagerwillre-assignthestudentconcertstaffafterconfirmationofthechangebytheFacilitiesCoordinator.16. INVITATIONANDPUBLICITY.Sendingwritten invitations,submittingpressreleasestonewspapers,and/orpostingnoticesareyourresponsibilityandaretobedoneonlyaftertherecitalprogramhasbeenapprovedandsignedbyalljurors.Themusicdepartmentneedsabriefbiographyandheadshotfromthestudent.USHERRESPONSIBILITIESAllmusicmajorsandminorsareexpected toserveasvolunteerushers fordepartmentalconcerts, recitals,andotherspecialevents.YouneedtocontacttheConcertHallManageratthebeginningofthesemesterorduringMUS300tosign up for ushering. Note the date and be sure to arrive on time. When you are an usher, please follow theseguidelines:1. Wearappropriate,conservativeclothing–nojeans,sneakersorT-shirts.2. 8. Youmayescortpeoplewithspecialneedstotheirseats.Beawareofthelocationsofhandicappedseats.Guestsinwheelchairsmustbeputeitherinfrontofthefirstroworbehindthelastrow.Nowheelchairsorstrollersmaybeputintheaisles.

The sameprocedure applies to students registered for summer appliedmusic lessons, and the keymustbereturnedbythelastdayofthesummersession.Studentsshouldsignupforpracticetimesatthebeginningofeveryweekusingtheschedulesheetspostedoneachdoorofthepracticerooms.
Practiceroomdoorsaretobelockedatalltimes.Itiseveryone’sresponsibilitytokeepthesedoorslockedsothatwekeepourpracticeroomsandpianosinthebestconditionpossible.Donotopenapracticeroomforanyotherperson;itishis/herresponsibilitytosignoutapracticeroomkeyfromtheMusicOffice.Allstudentsstudyingpercussionwillreceiveanaccesscodeforthetwopercussionpracticeroomsandthepercussioncloset.Thesecodeswillbechangedperiodicallyforsecurityreasons.Compositionandpianomajorswillbeissuedtwokeys ifavailable,oneforthestandardpracticeroomsandoneforthespecialpiano/compositionpracticerooms. AnyMusicStudentmayalsoacquireaWengerpracticemodulekey,whichopensfouradditionalrooms.Eachkeyrequiresa$5refundablefee.LOCKERALLOCATIONLockers are reserved formusicmajors andminors; other studentswho are registered for ensembles and/or appliedlessons or classesmay obtain any available remaining lockers by the thirdweek of the semester. Musicmajors orminorswhowishtoobtainlockerprivilegesmustseetheMusicDepartmentsecretaryduringthefirstweekofclasses,pay a yearly non-refundable fee of $15 ($10 for one semester), and receive a locker payment receipt. The FacilitiesCoordinatorwillthenassignalockertostudentsuponsubmissiontotheCoordinatorofthelockerpaymentreceipt.Forsecuritypurposes,theDepartmentrecommendsthatstudentsobtainandusetheirownlocksontheirassignedlockers.However, students may, if they so choose, use the Department’s combination lock already attached to the locker.Lockers must be emptied and any Departmental locks returned on or before the business day following URICommencement inMay. 1. Nomenclature. The studentwillbeable toanswerquestions thatdealwithnomenclatureconcerning thepianoaswellasnomenclaturethatmayconcerntempo,dynamics,and/orotherelementsofmusic.2. Scales. The studentwill performallmajor scales twooctaves,hands together, bymemoryat a tempoofM.M.=144pernote.3. Harmonizeatsight. Thestudentwillreadtwomelodiestakenfromanymajororminorkeychosenbytheexamination committee, improvising suitable accompaniments for the melodies by using diatonic triads andsecondarydominants,andreadingfromchordsymbols.4.Transposition.Thestudentwilltransposeatsighttwomelodiesselectedbytheexaminationcommittee.Thestudentwillbeaskedtotransposethemelodiesupordownbyeitherahalfsteporwhole-step.5. Patriotic songs. APPLIEDMUSICLESSONSAppliedmusiclessons(MUS110,210,310,and410)areprimarilyavailabletomusicmajorsandminors.Talentednon-musicmajorsorminors can register for applied lessonsbutonly after passing adepartmental audition. All studentsregisteringforMUS110orappliedmusiclessonsforthefirsttimemustreceivepermissionnumberfromtheirappliedinstructor.Studentscanregisterfor1,2,or3creditspersemesteriftakingMUS110or210;theycanregisterfor2,3,or4creditspersemesteriftakingMUS310or410.Onecreditequalsaone-halfhourlessonperweek;2,3,or4creditsequalanhourlessonperweekandrequireadditionalpreparationtime,higherlevelsofperformance,and,exceptforMUS110,MusicConvocationperformances.Musicmajorsshouldconsulttheirprogramdescriptions(BachelorofArtsinMusicorBachelor of Music) and work with their advisors in determining the number of credit hours they should take persemester.Musicminorsshouldregisterfor1or2creditseachsemester.Studentsregisteredforappliedmusiccoursesinthethirdsemesterandbeyond(MUS210,310and410)mustperforminConvocationeachsemester,withthefollowingexceptions:(1)AnystudentgivingajuniororseniorrecitalinagivensemesterisnotrequiredtoperforminConvocationduringthatsemester. (2)Anystudenttakingappliedlessonsonasecondary instrument is not required to perform in Convocation on the secondary instrument. If theappliedteachermissesa lessonbecauseof illness,emergency,orprofessionalobligations,he/shewillworkwiththestudenttomakeupthelesson.Ifthestudentmissesalesson, the teacher isundernoobligationtomakeupthe instructiontime lost. Inall cases, studentsshould let theirapplied teachers know as early as possible if a lessonwill bemissed and the reasonwhy. If the student is sick andunabletocometothelesson,heorsheisexpectedtocalltheteacherorMusicOfficeearlyinthemorningbeforethescheduledtimeofthelesson.Ifanaccompanistisinvolved,acallshouldalsobeplacedtothatperson.Juries. Jury examinations are held at the end of every semester during the final examination period. All studentsregisteredforappliedlessonsmustperformajuryexameachsemesterexceptforthesemesterofthejuniororseniorrecital. Studentswhoareperformancemajors in theB.M.degreeprogrammust takea fifteen-minute jury;allotherdegreemajorsandminorstakeaten-minutejury.Atthediscretionoftheinstructor,memorizationmayberequiredforrecitalsandperformances.Juries are grouped into applied areas: voice, piano, organ, brass,woodwinds, string and guitar, percussion, and jazzstudies.Towardtheendofthesemester,theMusicOfficewillpostsign-upsheetslistingthedaysandtimesofjuriesforeach of the applied areas. Each student works with his/her accompanist (if one will be needed) to identify anappropriatetimeforthejury,thensignsupforthatjurytimeontheappropriatesignupsheet,fillsoutthejurysheettitledStudentVoice/InstrumentalJuryForm,getstheappliedteacher’ssignature,andplacesthecompletedcopiesinthejuryenvelopesattachedtothesign-upsheets.Studentsdonotneedtoprovidecopiesofthemusictheyareperforming.
Studentsandtheiraccompanists(ifbeingused)shouldbewaitingbythejuryroomfifteenminutesbeforetheassignedtime.Afterthejury,thestudent’sappliedteacherbringsacopyofthejurysheet(StudentVoice/InstrumentalJuryForm)andcopiesofthewrittenevaluationstothemusicofficetobeplacedinthestudent’sacademicfile.Soonafterthejury,eachstudentshouldcontacttheirappliedinstructortoreceivecopiesofthewrittenevaluationsfromthejurors.If a student should be unable to perform in a semester jury due to extenuating circumstances (i.e., illness, accident,family emergency), he or she must be excused by his/her applied instructor and will be given a course grade ofincomplete.Thestudent,his/herteacher,andaccompanist(ifoneisused)workingwiththeMusicOffice,mustsetupamake-upjurywithinthefirst6weeksofthestudent’snextsemesterinresidence.Thestudent’sincompletecanthenbechangedtoagrade.SUMMERPRIVATESTUDYANDRECITALSStudentswhowishtoearncreditforprivatestudyduringasummermustobtainpriorpermissionfromtheDepartmentChair,andregisterthroughtheCollegeofContinuingEducation. ThenormalUniversityfeeforapplied lessonswillberequired. During the summer, the student must pay all costs for an accompanist, including any time in which anaccompanistaccompaniesanappliedlesson,masterclass,end-of-thetermjury,orrecital.SchedulingrecitalsduringsummersessionsisverystronglydiscouragedandmustbeapprovedbytheMusicDepartmentChairwellinadvanceoftherecitaldate.If a recital date has been approved, the student has additional recital costs and responsibilities -- including theprocurementandpaymentfortheservicesofastageandrecordingmanager. TheConcertCoordinatormustapprovethechoiceofa stageand recordingmanager. The studentmustpay forall time spentwithanaccompanistandanyotherneededmusicians.Thisincludesextratimewiththestudent’steacher.TheMusicOfficewillmakearrangementsforthetuningofthepianoand/orharpsichord,butthestudentmustpayforthepianotechnicians’services. It isthestudent’sresponsibilitytooverseeallarrangementsforthesummerrecitalandtoworkcarefullywiththeMusicOfficeandhis/herappliedteacher.PROCEDURESFORTHEINDEPENDENTSTUDYCOURSE(MUS490)•TheIndependentStudycourseisMUS490IndependentStudy(1-3).Independentstudyisthepreparationandcompletionofaprojectundertheguidanceofamemberoftheappropriatefaculty.•Astudentwantingtoregisterfortheabovecoursemustfollowtheseprocedures:

PIKAPPALAMBDA-NATIONALMUSICHONORSOCIETYTheMusicDepartmentsponsorstheZetaUpsilonChapterofPiKappaLambda,theonlymusichonorsocietyrecognizedby the Association of College Honor Societies. The Undergraduate Curriculum and AcademicStandards Committee considers proposals for new courses and curriculum changes in areas of undergraduate study,includingboththeB.M.andB.A.programs. Itconsidersallcurriculum-connectedundergraduatestudentpetitions. ItmakesrecommendationstoimproveandenforceDepartmentacademicstandards.
GraduateStudiesCommittee.TheGraduateStudiesCommitteeformulatesandconsidersproposalsfornewcoursesandcurriculum changes in areas of graduate study. It considers all curriculum-connected graduate student petitions. Itformulatesgraduateadmissionspoliciesandacademicstandards,andevaluatesallpotentialcandidates foradmissioninto the graduate program inmusic. The committee administers and evaluates graduate placement, qualifying, andcomprehensiveexaminations.ThecommitteeisnormallychairedbytheDepartment’sDirectorofGraduateStudies.UndergraduateRecruitmentandScholarshipCommittee. TheRecruitmentandScholarshipCommitteeactivelyrecruitspotentialundergraduatemusicmajorsthroughsponsorshipofspecialrecruitmenteventsandtheholdingofauditionsfor scholarships. The Committee administers the Department scholarship system, recommends awards for musicmajors,andacceptabilityintoundergraduatedegreeprogramsinmusic.VisibilityCommittee.TheVisibilityCommitteeexpandsthereachofthedepartmentinpromotingtheworkofstudents,facultyandalumnitotheUniversity,localcommunity,stateandnationthroughprintanddigitalmaterials.STUDENTCOMMITTEEStudentAdvisoryCommittee. The StudentAdvisoryCommittee consists of fivemusicmajors elected annually by thestudentbodyoftheDepartmenttoserveasanadvisorygrouptotheDepartmentChair.Oneofthesemajorsshouldbeagraduate student.Thecommitteemeetsmonthlywith theChairandexpresses ideasandconcerns,whichoriginatewithinthestudentbody.TheheadsoftheURICollegiateChaptersofMENCandACDA,KappaKappaPsi,andTauBetaSigma(ordesignatedrepresentatives)alsoserveonthiscommittee.
