INHIBITOR TECHNOLOGYINHIBITOR TECHNOLOGY• Nitrogen Stabilizer-A substance added to a fertilizer

which extends the time the nitrogen component of thefertilizer remains in the soil in the [urea or] ammoniacalform. (Official 2001)

• Urease Inhibitor-A substance which inhibits hydrolyticaction on urea by urease enzyme. When applied to soilsa urease inhibitor results in less urea nitrogen lost byammonia volatilization. (Official 1997)

• Nitrification Inhibitor –A substance that inhibits thebiological oxidations of ammoniacal nitrogen to nitratenitrogen. (Official 2001)

• AAPFCO Terms as defined by the Association ofAmerican Plant Food Control Officials

Methods of ImprovingMethods of ImprovingNitrogen EfficiencyNitrogen Efficiency

• Enhanced Nitrogen FeedingThere are opportunities to enhance nitrogen feeding byhelping nitrogen to be at the right place, right time, and inthe most advantageous form when the crop needs it.

• Minimized Nitrogen LossThere are five major avenues of nitrogen loss. Mechanicaland chemical technology exists to reduce these losses ofapplied nitrogen.

ImmobilizationImmobilization• Can account for 10-40% tie up of applied

nitrogen.• The nitrogen isn’t lost; however, often is

not available to the growing crop.• Placing nitrogen below the carbon rich zone

can reduce immobilization.• Urea containing compounds can be leached

by rainfall thru the carbon rich zone.• Urease inhibitors can aid in this process.

ErosionErosion

• Nitrogen is lost when soil erodes.

• Losses of Nitrogen can be as high as20%.

• Conservation tillage is our bestdeterrent to erosion losses.

Urease InhibitorsUrease Inhibitors

• Volatilization can occur anytimeatmospheric moisture and urease areavailable in temperatures that rangefrom 11ºF to 105ºF.

• Urease inhibitors block the conversionof urea to ammonia for a period of oneto two weeks allowing time forincorporation by rainfall or other means.

Nitrification InhibitorsNitrification Inhibitors

• Slow the conversion of NH4+ to NO3

- bycontrolling the population ofNitrosomonas and Nitrococcus bacteria.

• By controlling these bacteriapopulations, the conversion process ofammoniacal (NH4

+) nitrogen to nitrate(NO3

-) nitrogen is reduced.

• DCD: dicyandiamide• Nitrapyrin (2-chloro-6-(trichloromethyl)-

pyridene) In the United States, nitrapyrin isregistered by EPA as a pesticide. Whenapplied in combination with ammonium –Ncontaining fertilizers, the material must beincorporated.

Page 24: Urease and Nitrification Inhibitors - FIRTStabilizers... · a urease inhibitor results in less urea nitrogen lost by ... • PPD/PPDA: phenyl phosphorodiamidate • CHTPT: chclohexyl

In the soil DCD has a bacteriostatic effect onNitrosomonas bacteria, i.e. the bacteria arenot killed, but only depressed or inhibited intheir activities for a certain period of time.Even several applications have only led to adepressive effect on Nitrosomonas bacteria.

INHIBITOR TECHNOLOGYINHIBITOR TECHNOLOGY

To make efficient use of urea andammonium fertilizers, reduce nitrate run-off and leaching, and the emission ofammonia and greenhouse gases, theincorporation of urease inhibitors andnitrification inhibitors into urea andAmmonium containing fertilizers should berecommended as a best managementpractice.
