14TH SEASON OF
STORIESfrom our own unique voice.
OUR OWNTELLING
Message from the Artistic DirectorFor the past 14 years, Urban Ink Productions has played a unique and important role within the local and national arts community by creating, producing and disseminating original Canadian works created by Indigenous and Intercultural artists.
We believe that the voices of Indigenous and Intercultural artists provide a new perspective and are essential to the cultural conversation. Urban Ink is providing a place for these artists to have their voices heard through professional theatre. Telling our own stories from our own unique voice. We have a responsibility to change the narrative for indigenous and intercultural people to be a more accurate reflection of our perspectives.
I come into this position with a great sense of appreciation for the road that has been paved for me. Marie Clements and Diane Roberts poured themselves into this company and we honour them in our work moving forward.
In this 2014-2015 season we celebrate the fearless leadership that has brought Urban Ink into its 14th season.
I hope you will join us.

CHILDREN OF GOD A NEW MUSICAL BY COREY PAYETTE
Developed in partnership with Raven Theatre, Arts Club Theatre’s ReAct Festival, Full Circle: First Nations Performance and in collaboration with English Theatre at Canada’s National Arts Centre.
Children of God is a musical about an Oji-cree family whose children were sent to residential school. It takes place in two time periods twenty years apart, and examines how the effects of our past are directly related to our future. Written as a celebration of Indigenous peoples’ never-ending cultural spirit that blends traditional and contemporary, providing a new perspective to this story. To share in what was lost, the pain and anger that still exists in many families from wounds that will not heal. Hopefully, by acknowledging these stories we can move toward accepting the past.

RIBCAGE:THIS WIDE PASSAGE Created and performed by Heather HermantPresented by Firehall Arts Centre
The startling true story of Esther Brandeau, a Jewish woman from the French Basque region who arrives in 18th century Quebec City as a Christian male labourer. In this beautifully poetic and moving multimedia performance, Toronto spoken word artist Heather Hermant brings to life the historical archives that illustrate Brandeau’s journey with haunting video installations, breathtaking live music and a powerful performance. A bold, little-known Canadian foundation tale about displacement and identity, and a meditation on the meaning of history.

RETURN HOME by Dima Alansari
In partnership with the Return Home Collective and MT Space (Kitchener, ON)
The Return Home is Dima Alansari’s exploration of her hybrid identity. Curious about her family roots, she uncovers a strong connection to her great grand-father Ibrahim Alansari. Now living in Canada, Dima draws parallels between her own historical narrative of occupation and colonization and that of the Indig-enous Peoples of Turtle Island.
SEDNA/ NULIAJUKIn association with UBC’s First Nations Studies Program
Nuliajuk (Inuktitut for Sedna) is a collaborative research project to uncover and reclaim the traditional story as told by Inuk Elders in Northern Communities. Nuliajuk is the Inuit goddess of the sea, whom fishermen and Northern Communities have worshipped and given sacrifice to for centuries. Her story has been passed on for generations and many versions of this myth exist.DE
