    R ELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Catechetical Sunday, September 20, 2020 ~ We honor and pray for our Faith Formation Directors, Mrs. MaryEtta Filotei and Mrs. Mary Ann Miller, our CCD teachers (listed below), and classroom aides as we begin a new school year. We also lift up our CCD children in prayer as they begin a new year of growing in their faith! Please note: At the Russellton Campus there will be an “Open House” for parents and students on Sunday, September 20, and CCD classes will begin the following Sunday, September 27.

Our Lady of the Lakes CCD Teachers:

Prayer for our Teachers ~ God our Father, source of all wisdom and knowledge, you sent your Son Jesus to live among us and to proclaim his message of faith, hope, and love. In your goodness, bless our brothers and sisters who have offered themselves to you. Strengthen them with your gifts that they may teach by word and example the truth that comes from you. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Prayer for Parents and Guardians ~ God our Father, let your peace settle within the hearts of these mothers, fathers, and guardians. Give them strength and wisdom as they care for their children. Show them how to raise their families with patience and tenderness. Give them strength during the times of greatest difficulty and help them recognize the little joys that are part of each day. May they grow in wisdom, understanding, and grace. We ask this in the name of Je-sus Christ, who is one with you and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Thank you to all who contributed to the "CCD Drive for Five!" It was a tremendous help in supplying CCD with items children need.

St. Michael the Archangel Novena ~ Dedicated to all those suffering from addiction and their fami-lies, the novena continues through Sunday, Sep-tember 27th, immediately following the 9:00am Mass at TRC. Join us for a Concluding Mass on Tuesday, September 29th, Feast of the Archangels, at 7pm, at TRC.

P RAY F OR O UR S ICK Mass Attendance Volumes

We have been experiencing higher attendance numbers at the Sunday morning Masses, which is a good problem to have! If your schedule per-mits, you are welcome to attend a weekday or Saturday Vigil Mass. Dispensation of the obliga-tion to attend Mass is still in effect in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Most importantly, if you are experiencing any symp-toms of illness, please stay at home to rest and recover fully be-fore returning to Mass.

Registration (18+ required) in the parish for a suf-ficient period of time and use of the envelope sys-tem or electronic giving in support of the parish

It is a visible statement of solidarity by the Christian community that abortion kills children and that the church supports the sanctity of human life from the moment of conception to natural death. Bring the family. Covid-19 guidelines will be observed. Water, lawn chairs, and strollers are welcome. If we as Christians do not speak for the unborn who will? Signs provided. R EADINGS FOR THE W EEK

REFLECT FIRST READING While still in captivity in Babylon, Isaiah urged the Israelites to seek the Lord, for the Lord is near even in exile. When have you felt the Lord’s presence in dark periods of your life?

SECOND READING In his letter to the Philippians written from prison and toward the end of his life, Paul reflects on his spiritual dilemma between life and death. How do you work through spiritual dilemmas?

GOSPEL READING Jesus’ parable of the workers in the vineyard of the Lord offers us important insights into the Kingdom of Heaven and God’s generosity. To whom do you think this parable is unsettling?

    ©LPi

GOSPEL MEDITATION If I work for five hours, I expect to get paid for five hours. If I work for two, I expect to get paid for two. What if we worked for a company that paid everyone the same amount regard-less of how long they worked? How would we feel going home with the same pay for working eight hours as my co-worker did for working only two hours? Secular wisdom would have a huge problem with this and a visit to the Labor Board would quickly pursue. But this is God’s wisdom and God’s ways.

We sometimes think that if we pray more, better, or more fervently and go over and above with the practice of our faith, God will somehow reward us and present us with some kind of merit badge. We are so wrong. Spiritual practices have only one true purpose: to deepen our love for God. In deepen-ing our love for God, we also increase our ability to see God’s presence around us, living life more purposefully and con-templatively. What if God chooses to treat someone who has come on the scene of faith later in life the same as someone who has devoted their whole lives to it? Does it really matter? If we have the merit badge notion of faith, we can find our-selves feeling a little arrogant and even jealous of folks who have not followed the same path that we have. We can even see ourselves as the privileged few who have a corner on the faith and fully possess it.

That thinking doesn’t square with God. God is all about mercy in abundance and is ready to take anyone to himself regard-less of when they come. He is only happy that they have come home and delights in their return. After all, if you really and truly love someone, does it matter what they will give you in return or what you receive as a benefit? If relationships were assessed based upon productivity, they would lack authentic love. We invest too much self interest in our prayer and ne-glect to see it as an opportunity to pursue our Lover and deepen the intimate bond we have with God.

When we breathe our last, all that is of consequence is union with God. If my love for God is real, I am going to want to live the Gospel, abide by the commandments, practice my faith, forgive and love my neighbor, and care for the environment, regardless of how much time it takes or benefits me. We want God to think and behave as we do, and in doing so, we set ourselves up for disappointment. God has a totally differ-ent agenda and that’s okay.
