Anointing of the Sick In Anointing of the Sick, the Church prays that the healing grace of Christ might touch the whole person, not just for physical healing, but that the one sick might find forgiveness and hope. It is appropriate to seek it for any serious illness, physical, emotional or mental, and not just in danger of death.
Celebrated communally on specific dates. Also by request, please call a friar directly. Please Note: Because of Privacy Laws, hospi-tals may not inform us when a Catholic is in the hospital. To notify the parish, please call Jackie Adamo, 919-847-8205x268.

Confirmation Confirmation is a Sacrament of mature Christian commitment and a deepening of baptismal gifts of the Holy Spirit. Like Baptism and Eucharist, it is a Sacrament of Initiation and of faith in God's fidelity to us. Our regular parish program is a two-year process that may begin with entrance to 8th grade.
Reconciliation The Sacrament of Reconciliation is an expression of God's forgiveness of our sins that reconciles the baptized with God and with the Church community. It is celebrated in Advent and Lent communally and individually at 4:30 pm on Saturday in the Reconciliation Room (inside the Eucharistic Chapel).

In the few months that I have been at St. Francis, one of my favorite things to do is to walk around our campus. Part of that is that it’s just good to get out of the office for a bit and part of it is that I can see and meet people in the day-to-dayness of things. Last week, for example, in the parking lot after school,
I got to pick up a football and toss some passes to the kids in the afterschool program, which made me feel like I was once again in fifth grade. I asked them all who they liked in the Super Bowl, and they told me their picks – mostly either Green Bay or New England, and surprisingly not much support for the Seattle Seahawks. One girl approached me and showed me that she had just learned how to dribble a basketball and proceeded to dribble a while, then pass to one of her friends, who then took a shot at the hoop and hit the rim. Nice shot!
One day outside the preschool playground, a group of 4-5 year-olds crowded around the fence and begged me to bring them some acorns – there were piles of acorns just outside the fence which they couldn’t reach. Who knows what for? They were happy to be outside, playing on the slide, being with their friends, and I am sure their teachers were just as happy! It all adds to the sense that St. Francis is a great place to be.
This Sunday, from 12:45 to 2:00 pm, both our school and our preschool will be holding an Open House. If you’re looking for a school for your child or know of someone who is, we encourage you to attend to learn more about our schools at the Open House. I know from my own experience of being around both the school and the preschool that they are gems, with dedicated teachers and staff. They add much to the life of our campus.
A few people have asked whether we should be shaking hands at mass during flu season. I think the best thing to do at this point is to leave it up to each person to decide whether they want to or not.
We have heard about the recent layoffs in the RTP area and we’d like to remind people of a ministry that we have here called Job Connections which seeks to help people who have lost their job. For more information, you can contact Vince Papi at 919-926-7193 or [email protected]. Thanks to Vince and to all those in-volved in this ministry. Blessings on your week!

Conversations about
Over the next three months, we will be hosting timely conversations about social conflicts in our community and around the world. Islam and the west, and migration. Black and white relations in the south. Palestine and Israel, occupation and violence. When’s the last time you tried to talk about these issues with someone?
We will be framing our conversation around these issues by first viewing films that engage some historical context and provide a set of stories for us to consider in light of our faith. In our current cultural climate of highly polarizing sound bites and talking heads on our news channel of choice, finding respectful spaces where genuine conversation happens is difficult. In our community
of St. Francis we aim to create a safe climate for learning about and discussing the signs of the times. We hope to see you! Presenting: In This World, January 26, 7:00 pm, Anthony Hall Room 403 This film follows two young Afghan refugees as they leave a refugee camp in Pakistan for a better life in London. Since their journey is illegal, it is fraught with danger, and they must use back-channels, bribes, and smugglers to achieve their goal. Presenting: Blood Done Sign My Name, February 23, 7:00 pm, Anthony Hall Room 403 A drama based on the true story in which a black Vietnam-era veteran is allegedly murdered by a local white businessman who is later exonerated. The plot focuses on the role of a local high-school teacher and the civil unrest that followed the acquittal.
Presenting: The Stones Cry Out, March 23, 7:00 pm, Anthony Hall Room 403 Christianity was born in Palestine two thousand years ago. From there it spread throughout the Middle East and to the rest of the world. Yet many are unaware Christians still live in the land. For more than 60 years the Palestini-ans, Christians, and Muslims, have suffered displace-ment, expulsion, wars, occupation, and oppression. The voices of Palestinian Christians have all too often been drowned out in the turmoil of events. This is their story, in their voices, from the Nakba of 1948 until today.

This weekend begins a weeklong celebration of Catholic education with Catholic Schools Week. This is an annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. During this time, Catholic preschool, elementary, middle, and high schools across the country take time to highlight the many wonderful qualities of Catholic education.
The theme for this year’s National Catholic Schools Week is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” At the Franciscan School, we believe that an important component to a child’s educational journey is to discover the talents and uniqueness they possess, to nurture these gifts, and share them with others. We are dedicated to helping our students discover what makes each of them special and providing them with many op-portunities to learn and grow through education and share their gifts and knowledge to make the world a bet-ter place.
We begin our Catholic Schools Week with Winter Open House for the Franciscan School this Sunday, January 25 from 12:45 to 2:00 pm, starting in Jacoba Hall. We invite you to visit us, tour our beautiful facilities, meet our tal-ented faculty and staff, and learn how our school can of-fer a great foundation to a child’s education for children in grades K-8.
Throughout the week, we will be celebrating our knowl-edge, spiritual leaders, faith, service and our school through various activities, including a school-wide service project on Thursday. Through this celebration of Catholic Schools Week, it is our hope that we can share with the community the value a Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities, and our nation.
For more information about the Franciscan School, please contact Lura Tysiac at [email protected] or 919-847-8205x469.
There are many advantages of an early childhood edu-cation. St. Francis of Assisi Preschool strives daily to provide our children with the social, emotional, and pre-academic skills that will lead to their future success in elementary school and beyond. More importantly, we provide our students with a solid foundation while putting faith into action. Step by step, they learn to follow in the footsteps of our Lord.
As our mission statement reads… “Inspired by our Pa-tron Francis of Assisi, we seek to proclaim the reign of God by growing in Holiness through our experience of Christ in word, sacrament and one another, offering Hope to those who hunger for human dignity and extend-ing Hospitality to all.” To support these areas, the Pre-school’s objectives are to provide developmentally ap-propriate activities, create opportunities to experience Catholic tradition, foster the development of a beginning relationship with God, and to partner with parents as the “first teachers in faith.”
Here at the Preschool, we believe that faith shared with parents, teachers, and students is nourished by prayer and worship within the total life of the school and parish community. The Preschool environment will encourage the children to develop greater self-esteem and respect for others. In addition, it will provide a place for each child to explore and engage in free and imaginative play.
We hope that you will join us this Sunday for our Winter Open House from 12:45 until 2:00 pm, beginning in Elizabeth Hall. Come out and meet the teachers, admin-istrators, and staff and tour our facilities. Find out more about our exceptional preschool program and all it has to offer for children ages 2-5, including extended day and preparatory kindergarten options.

Community Life
In this season of Ordinary Time, winter is upon us and we cuddle up with the family in front of warm afternoon fires to calmly rest from the hustle and bustle of the holi-day season. There is football and college basketball all over the screens. Kids are studying hard with projects and tests and reports. Warm soups, breads, and casse-roles are baking in the ovens, so it’s kind of hard to hear today’s readings and think about any kind of urgency. The last thing I want to do is think about urgency of any-thing. Yet, that is exactly what we are asked this week. We are asked to recognize that the kingdom of God is at hand and we need to be ready if we are asked to drop everything and go.
Jesus came and called the disciples to be fishers of men. I love that phrase: “fishers of men.” I wonder how many of us could be called fishers of men. Today, we don’t necessarily drop everything to go follow one man, but can we drop all the hustle and bustle to follow Jesus? Are we helping each other do that?
In a couple of weeks on February 8, we will be celebrat-ing the end of the youth basketball season and the be-ginning of the high school season. We will celebrate with the annual Assisi Community Center Jamboree. This year, we will be recognizing a fisher of men among us. Jerome Friedman was a parishioner, husband, fa-ther, coach, and mentor. Jerome was one of our long-time coaches in the gym. He coached so many young men and he was really a fisher of men among us. He taught the boys his core words and every practice they would focus on these concepts and try to live out these concepts as members of our community. Today, each of the young men can tell you how Jerome’s character and legacy live in them now. These young men and Jerome’s widow will join us at the Jamboree to share those core values with us.
Perhaps we will be the “big catch” and become fishers of men ourselves. Look for the urgency as Jerome lived the urgency in his life every single day. The kingdom is near and we all need to be fishers of men.

Faith in Action: Catholic Social Teaching 11
Monthly Theme: Family and Community Teaching: Society often proclaims the importance of individualism but Catholic social teaching argues that human beings are fulfilled in community and family.
Reflect: “It is imperative that no one ... would indulge in a merely individualistic morality. The best way to fulfill one's obligations of justice and love is to contribute to the common good according to one's means and the needs of others, and also to promote and help public and private organizations devoted to bettering the conditions of life.” Gaudium et Spes, Vatican II
Pray: Loving God, you are so patient with us and our self-ishness. Help us to see beyond our own wants and needs for the sake of greater justice and peace in our community and world.
Learn and Act: Knock on a neighbor’s door this week and see how things are going for them. Anything you can do to make the neighborhood better?

Hospitality Assisi Adult Scripture Study for 2015
Join us for one or all three great studies beginning January, 2015. Through prayer, study, discussion, and a wrap-up lecture, participants learn how scripture impacts their daily lives as Catholic Christians.
Location: Siena Hall Room 752. Cost of materials: $20 per participant, due at the first session. Registration: www.stfrancisraleigh.org/assisi-scripture-study or 919-847-8205.
Hebrews: Thursdays, March 19 -May 14, 7:00 – 8:30 pm. (We will not meet April 2 or April 9.) The study of Hebrews is more like a sermon than a letter. It reviews the history of Israel to demon-strate how Jesus Christ fulfills and even surpasses all the hopes expressed in the Old Testament. It presents Jesus as the unique High Priest who is simultane-ously the one who offers sacrifice to God and is himself the sacrifice. Jesus is presented as our High Priest whose compassion for us is rooted in his humanity, but whose sacrifice is all sufficient because he is without sin. Register by March 4.
Jeremiah: Thursdays, September 10- Nov. 19. With the exile of many in Judah on the horizon, the prophet Jeremiah spoke on God's behalf using words and symbolic actions to condemn the idolatry that was rampant in Judah. His pro-phetic ministry was deeply misunder-stood and his subsequent arrest was the source of personal anguish for this prophet who also announced a new covenant to be written on the hearts of God's people. Register by August 26.
Watch the bulletin for details on an Introduction to the Bible study beginning in September.
Holiness Inspired by our patron Francis of Assisi, we seek to proclaim the reign of God by growing in Holiness through our experience of Christ in word, sacrament and one another, offering Hope to those who hunger for human dignity, and extending Hospitality to all.

Always Our Children: This program provides a confidential setting in which GLBT persons and parents, families and friends of GLBT persons support one another by sharing their concerns and experiences in a confidential and Catholic setting. Our goal is to help peo-ple develop acceptance of themselves, free themselves from fear, foster loving families, and establish a fulfilling rela-tionship with the Church. More informa-tion and meeting dates at http://bit.ly/sfaaoc.
