me,” said Kevin Freeman, junior at
ECA. Sierra Jefferson, a Community
High tenth grader, really tried to
learn from the experience. “I was
working on not reading directly
from the presentation, so I prac-
ticed a lot. I think it helped!”
Thanks to the hard work of each
student, the tour guides at each
institution were impressed (and in
some moments, stumped) by the
questions being asked. In turn, the
students were able to gain a better
understanding of what each college
had to offer and take one more step
towards finding their right fit.
“Do you superscore the ACT?”
This was one of many tough ques-
tions Upward Bound students were
able to ask college admissions rep-
resentatives this summer as they
visited higher education institutions
in search of their right fit. Our 43
Summer Academy participants
traveled to the University of Tole-
do, the University of Detroit Mercy,
& Central Michigan University as
part of weekly college readiness
tours built into the structure of the
program. They also took part in a
tour of EMU, their home away from
home for the program’s 6 week
duration.
Prior to visiting each campus,
students enrolled in the College
Preview course conducted research
on the institution and presented
their findings to the entire group,
showcasing each school’s academic
& social offerings as well as
admissions requirements and
unique features. The first presenta-
tion was a hit. “I really hope we
continue this each week; I really like
knowing a little bit about where
we’re headed,” said Arionna
Freeman-Pinder, a tenth grader in
ECA.
Not only did this format help the
students be more prepared for the
tours, but it provided a leadership
opportunity and large group
presenting experience for those
enrolled in the course. “I’m really
comfortable presenting; it’s fun for
This year’s final field trip sent
students and staff to Ohio for a
three day college tour that
included stops at the University
of Cincinnati, Ohio State
University, and Kent State
University. The group also had a
chance to sing along with the
stars at the Rock & Roll Hall of
Fame Museum and explore a
cave at the Cincinnati
Museum of Natural History
& Science. No trip to Ohio
is complete without a stop
at Cedar Point, meaning the
program concluded in
thrilling fashion with more
fast starts, twists, & turns
then we’d had all summer.

Meet Our Tutors!
Shining Stars
Just a few short weeks after
visiting the University of
Toledo, Debrieana
Jackson was invited to
tour the Honors College!
With aspirations to study
medicine and become a
pediatrician, Debrieana
maintains a 3.8 GPA,
exceeding the eligibility
requirements for consider-
ation for the honors
program!
Similarly, Tyrone Cole-
man has been offered
admission and a $44,000
scholarship to his first
choice school, Indiana
Tech. He recently visited
the campus and met the
track coach, who will be
offering additional scholar-
ships should he decide to
run for their team as he
pursues a degree in
mechanical engineering.
Congratulations seniors!
We are so proud of you!
Is there an Upward Bound
student you know who has
excelled in the classroom, in
the workplace, or in the com-
munity? Tell us about it! Send
a message to Haley Mulka at
[email protected] and each
month we’ll recognize stu-
dents for their outstanding
efforts!
Throughout the semester, a dedicated team of EMU student tutors have been working
with Upward Bound students during College Club, Group Meetings, and Senior Seminar.
These tutors have gone above and beyond to work with your students on homework,
resume writing, portfolio building, and reading skills. We are grateful for their energy and
commitment to Upward Bound!

Summer academy kept students
busy throughout each day with
academic classes, workshops, ACT
preparation, and study sessions.
The evening was time to socialize
and relax with free time as well as
through various structured activi-
ties.
Activities varied each night and
were times for students to display
creativity, build community, & learn
more about the world around
them. The Corner Health Center &
Dispute Resolution Center came
and provided discussion-based
workshops to help students think
about maintaining healthy relation-
ships. T-shirt Design Night encour-
aged students to express them-
selves and make something they
would remember the academy
with. Tradition mandated a basket-
ball game against the esteemed DPS
officers as well as a movie night,
and a new tradition began as one of
our college student Peer Advisors
gave a soccer lesson that turned
into one of the most competitive
athletic events Upward Bound has
participated in.
Save the Date! On February 14,
2014, Upward Bound will be travel-
ing to Michigan State University, so
grab your Spartan gear and join us
for a college tour, lunch in one of
the campus cafeterias, and an inter-
active presentation at the planetar-
ium. Permission slips and more
information will be provided in the
new year.
In November, Dr. Jackson accom-
panied a group of students to the
UNCF Empower Me Tour, a free
event designed to provide re-
sources and motivation for stu-
dents to reach their academic, per-
sonal, and career goals. The full-
day event consisted of scholarship
and financial aid workshops, a col-
lege fair, and several motivational
speakers.
