Parent Association – Get Involved & Earn Service Hours

The Parent Association has developed four committees for the 2012-2013 academic year. Each committee needs parent support; even if you cannot attend every committee meeting, your assistance can be utilized. The majority of parent service opportunities will be available through the committees. Parent service hours will be earned through committee-sponsored activities and monitored by the chairs of each committee. Each week, the Program Support Committee will record service hours on a master list. Senior Timeline: What should seniors be doing in October?

• Apply! Priority deadlines are Nov. 1 for some colleges (UMD, UMBC, Howard). That means EVERYTHING needs to be in by Nov 1 - recommendations, SAT/ACT scores, transcript, and all other required documents. Consider using the Common Application or Black College Common Application.

• Schedule your senior conference with your Pre-College Programs counselor. • Make plans to visit your top choices. Check to see if your schools of interest have an open house or

other events for prospective students scheduled. • Include your parents on your college research. Invite them to go with you to visit schools and

college fairs. • Continue to research scholarships. Some scholarships have deadlines in October/November.
