Upper Coomera. FEB - MARCH 2020 Our valuable volunteers. Pictured above are just some of the many wonderful volunteers who lend a hand here at Palm Lake Resort Upper Coomera. What a great group of residents these people are, and they are just some of the many volunteers we have who are always there before, during and after resort functions to keep the social activities well organised and running smoothly. We have many other volunteers at Upper Coomera who assist within the resort with breakfast, dinners, special event celebrations, birthdays, activities, classes and more. They believe in any excuse to get together and socialise! As well as these precious people, there are many additional residents who also volunteer outside our resort to aid those less fortunate than themselves. They meet any volunteering needs as best they can. To celebrate these special residents and the work they’ve done over the past year, we held a morning tea at the resort recently to honour them. Where would we be without the likes of these types of people? Palm Lake Resort Upper Coomera management would like to take this opportunity to thank you all and let you know that your work is very much appreciated.

Upper Coomera.FEB - MARCH 2020

Our valuable volunteers.

We have many other volunteers at Upper Coomera who assist within the resort with breakfast, dinners, special event celebrations,

birthdays, activities, classes and more.

BRUNCH ‘N PUNCH RESUMES FOR 2020

Make a note: Brunch ‘n Punch is starting up for the New Year. February 23 will be the first opportunity of 2020 to enjoy one of those tasty and filling starts to the day at a very reasonable price. Please put you name on the list in The River Club to partake in this great resort event.

Welcome to a New Year and a new decade! 2020 will no doubt be the year and decade of new adventures, good health and exciting times ahead.

Looking back, 2019 was a year of many achievements and a coming together for residents. We saw some changes and worked together to enjoy unity.

It is a very sad and trying time for everyone with the bushfires throughout the country. Please take this time to ensure that you are fire safety conscious and that you are prepared should an emergency arise locally. Safety of lives is paramount - lives cannot be replaced while possessions (in most cases) can.

With dam water levels now quite low, water conservation should be top of mind. Try to shorten your showers, turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving, fix all leaking taps or toilets, and minimize gardening watering. Do anything and everything to conserve water as it all adds up. Remember that any and all water restrictions issued by our governments apply within the resort as well and must be adhered to.

Remember to check the noticeboard and clipboards for up and coming functions, regular activities and annual events.

And remember, “Being happy isn’t having everything in your life perfect. Maybe it’s about stringing together all the little things”.

Until next time,

Trish & Rik Resort caretakers

Christmas crafts and gifts galore.

Pictured above and below: There is always a need to do some spending and both of our resort shopping events held recently were well attended and supported by residents and friends who are always looking for an ideal gift to giveaway or treat themselves to.

Pictured left: This is Lora who is proudly standing by her infamous bowl of punch at the recent Christmas party for the Palm Lake Resort Upper Coomera “Warnouts”. Pictured below, a great time was had by all who attended. And we can report that the punch bowl was well and truly empty by the end of the night!

Cheers to the Warnouts.

Pictured below: We had a fantastic turn out of residents and their guests to our Carols by Candlelight event over the festive season. It was so lovely to see so many smiling faces — especially the grandchildren’s. It was also great to see the range of ages coming out to join in a time of sharing. There was much fun, laughter and lots of very harmonious singing followed by some Christmas cake and port. Thanks must go to our amazing resident Libby and her helpers for enabling us to enjoy this wonderful annual Riverside tradition.

Twenty-twenty vision.

Pictured right and far right: Yet another fantastic social evening was held recently with our Riverside New Year’s Eve party. The jukebox rocked the night away with just about everyone jiving on the floor at some point throughout the evening. Challenging games were played that created much amusement later in the evening. After some ‘refreshments’ had been consumed, the challenge seemed so much harder! We sang and danced the night away and before we knew it, it was time to welcome in the New Year. Thanks to Lea (Villa 52) for organising such a great start to the New Year and a new decade!

Choosing to live at a Palm Lake Resort does come with the difficult decision of leaving your family home, however, so does travelling Australia or the world. The added benefits are that you don’t come back to front grass to mow (we’ll take care of that for you) and your most important assets are secure while you’re away. Leaving these kinds of worries behind have been some of the biggest drawcards for our residents, many of whom still have the family around for visits between their travel adventures. Downsize your home and upsize your lifestyle. It’s time for you.

DRUMROLL PLEASE. THE PANTONE COLOUR OF THE YEAR FOR 2020 IS… PANTONE 19-4052 “CLASSIC BLUE”.

Yep, blue. And it’s a wonderful shade that is perfect for homes, fashion, everything really! According to Pantone, this colour represents “a dependable and stable foundation to move forward to a new era”. It brings calmness, confidence and connection, they say. “We are living in a time that requires trust and faith. It is this kind of constancy and confidence that is expressed by Classic Blue, a solid and dependable blue hue we can always rely on,” says Leatrice Eiseman of the Pantone Colour Institute. Pantone suggests pairing it with saffron yellow, soft pink and even rich forest green.

The classic choice.

Turn up the heat.IT’S BEEN A POPULAR FINNISH PASTIME FOR CENTURIES, BUT RECENT STUDIES HAVE REVEALED THAT SPENDING TIME IN A SAUNA DOESN’T JUST FEEL GOOD – IT COULD ALSO BE INCREDIBLY GOOD FOR YOU.

A study published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings has reported that regular sauna bathing can bring about physical benefits similar to those associated with moderate exercise. While this isn’t to say that sauna bathing should completely replace exercise – a combined approach has yielded the best results – there is plenty of evidence to suggest that hitting the sauna a few times a week can offer numerous physical benefits.

While there is no active functioning of the skeletal muscles during sauna bathing, the heat and increase in heartrate – typically from baseline up to 120 to 150 BPM – is said to increase muscle blood flow, aiding in joint health and blood pressure.Sauna bathing has been found to benefit cardiovascular function, with two reports investigating the effects of regular sauna bathing on the long-term risk of cardiovascular disease. One found an increase in sauna bathing habits to be associated with reduced risk of sudden cardiac death, while the other found that sauna bathing four to seven times a week

reduced the risk of stroke by 62 per cent in comparison to sauna bathing just once a week. These recent findings indicate that high corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) levels – which can typically be improved with regular physical activity – and frequent sauna sessions can substantially reduce the risk of adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Sauna bathing has also been linked to an improvement in pain and symptoms associated with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and other musculoskeletal disorders, and can improve headache disorders.

So, there you have it – frequent visits to your resort sauna could do your physical health a world of good. Keep in mind, however, that high temperatures in saunas could be potentially harmful for those with symptomatic and unstable disease conditions, or when combined with alcohol consumption. It’s important to consult with your doctor before adding more sauna visits into your weekly routine.

A GOAL WITHOUT A PLAN IS SIMPLY A LIST. HERE’S WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO CONTINUE SETTING GOALS, WHATEVER YOUR AGE. AND AT THIS TIME OF THE (NEW) YEAR, GOAL SETTING CAN BE EVEN MORE REWARDING...

Got goals? Get some!

Having something to look forward to can trigger a surge of dopamine (your reward hormone) and serotonin (the hormone that helps with sleep and relieves pain and bad moods). Many of us use food or alcohol to trigger these hormones but when we feel them in response to setting, projecting and reaching new goals, we feel successful, capable, confident and relaxed.

“When you are goal-oriented, you develop a more resilient emotional version of yourself,” says naturopath, author and speaker Nicky Wise. “But as we move into a slower, less demanding phase of our lives, not having a time-orientated deadline to work to can feel foreign and, for some, downright disorienting.”

The benefits of setting goals in retirement are manifold: it can bring a sense of purpose or connection, prevent regression into despondency, depression and disconnection and keep things interesting and engaging.

“Matching your goals to suit your stage of retirement is important,” Nicky says. “If you are just entering your retirement and still in the working rhythm, you may need to set goals that will keep you busy with moderate time expectations. Alternatively, if you are older, your goals may focus on improving your personal health and wellbeing. Science tells us that our life satisfaction increases when you have a purpose. Setting and achieving your goals will help you find that purpose.”

HERE ARE NICKY’S TOP 5 TIPS ON HOW TO SET GOALS:

1. Set SMART goals – ‘Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely’.2. Write out your goals and display them where you can see them.3. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t achieve your goal on the first try, or your first attempt doesn’t go to plan – you have time to reset and review, which is vital to goal setting success.4. Set a goal that involves learning something new or attempting something you’ve never tried before.5. Write a free form list of all the things you’ve always wanted to do, try, visit, experience, see, listen to, know about and explore – not a bucket list, but rather a ‘lazy Susan’ of what you can still do for the fun and pleasure of it. Use this as a master list to draw your specific goals from.
