History of UPMC Shadyside
UPMC Shadyside had its beginnings in 1866 as Homeopathic Medical and Surgical Hospital and
Dispensary in downtown Pittsburgh. In 1884 it moved to a new building, again downtown. The
same year, the hospital established western Pennsylvania’s first school of nursing.
In 1896, the hospital pioneered the first x-ray in western Pennsylvania. It was also among the
first to use Joseph Lister’s antiseptic techniques for surgery.
The hospital moved Shadyside in 1910, on a site just in front of its present location. In 1938, its
name was changed to Shadyside Hospital. The present building was erected in 1972, and it
became part of UPMC in 1997.
The hospital has a long legacy of leadership in cardiology and cardiac surgery. In the 1960s it
was an early adopter of the cardioverter to correct erratic heartbeats. In the next decades it
moved to the forefront of interventional cardiology, developing new catheters and performing
angioplasties. Shadyside Hospital had Pittsburgh’s first coronary care unit. Geriatrics also has a
strong legacy here; Shadyside Hospital boasted the nation’s first physician to be board certified
in geriatrics.
Geography and Demographics
Allegheny County, Pennsylvania
Allegheny County is an excellent example of how a county
overcame great adversity resulting from the demise of the steel
industry and how it built a new future through substantial economic change. The area was once
the steelmaking capital of the world. Now only about 4 percent of the labor force is employed in
primary and fabricated metals.
The backbone of the economic base is health care, education, high technology, light
manufacturing, professional services along with retail and wholesale trade. Allegheny County is
considered an international leader in the fields of chemical, plastic and nuclear research. Nearly
1,000 high technology companies are located in the Greater Pittsburgh area.
Film makers have chosen the area for moviemaking because of varied topography, unique
architecture, strong ethnic neighborhoods, cooperative government officials, low costs and
friendly environment. The new Pittsburgh International Airport is the largest airport complex
built since the construction of the Dallas-Fort Worth airport in 1974.
The airport is dubbed the “airport of the future” because of its advanced operational functions
and built-in expansion capabilities. Employment spin-offs from the airport will generate between
18,000-20,000 new jobs over a 10 year period. Allegheny County has more than 50 hospitals,
many of which are recognized
nationally as high-quality medical
research and teaching hospitals,
including a leadership position in
organ transplantation. New home
costs are about 16 percent less
than the national average while
the older housing stock is
excellent and well maintained.
The four rivers that flow through
Allegheny County now allow
fishermen to land game fish where
20 years ago there were lifeless
bodies of water.
The soot, smog and grime
associated with the booming steel
industry are a thing of the past. The area houses many local performing groups, orchestras,
choirs, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Ballet Theater and the Civic Light Opera. The region also
maintains more than 100 art galleries, historical landmarks and museums including the
Carnegie’s Museum of National History, Art Museum, Music Hall, Library and Science Center,
the Pittsburgh Zoo and the Pittsburgh Aviary.
There are three major sports teams in the county (Pirates, Steelers and Penguins). In the summer,
the Three Rivers Regatta draws more than 500,000 spectators. The Three Rivers Arts Festival
and the Pittsburgh Marathon are also major summer events.
Shadyside is a neighborhood in the East End of
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. It has
zip codes of both 15232 and 15206, and has
representation on Pittsburgh City Council by the
council member for District 8 (East Central
Neighborhoods). The nomenclature Shadyside
is drawn from the 19th century Pennsylvania
Railroad station in the area, named for its
unique shady lanes.
Shadyside is home to many of the more upscale
stores and boutiques in Pittsburgh including
Moda, Coach, Williams-Sonoma, and White House Black Market. The Shadyside Market,
owned by the Dupuis family of Baton Rouge, LA for more than 50 years, features fresh produce,
an on-site butcher, and a deli which is frequently packed by locals. Stores are located in two
corridors; one centers on Ellsworth Avenue, the other on Walnut Street.
Walnut has more stores that belong to national chains, including Gap (along with Baby Gap, Gap
Kids and Gap Body), Apple, J.Crew, American Apparel, Chico's, Victoria's Secret, Banana
Republic, Talbot’s Coach, and United Colors of Benetton. Local restaurants include Jitters,
Cappy's, Doc's, William Penn Tavern, and Pamela's.
Ellsworth tends to have smaller locally owned businesses, including Eons (a vintage store),
Gallerie Chiz (an art gallery, and beauty salons such as 5804, Capristo salon and Mikel's.
Ellsworth has a number of restaurants such as The Elbow Room, Bites and Brews, and Soba.
Ellsworth also features two of Pittsburgh’s' gay and gay friendly bars, Spin and 5801, formerly
known as New York, New York. Shadyside also features boutique Inns and Hotels like
Shadyside Inn Suites, The Inns On Negley, and Sunnyledge
Shadyside is also home to the Winchester Thurston School, as well as The Ellis School on Fifth
Avenue, Pittsburgh's only all-girl pre-K–12. Another neighborhood institution is Shadyside
Hospital, a member of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Additionally, Pittsburgh
Center for the Arts and Chatham University are located just across the northern edge of the
neighborhood in Squirrel Hill.
The Jam on Walnut is a summer concert series that features local and regional music concerts.
The concerts are held on the last Saturday of each summer month on the corner of Bellafonte and
Walnut Street. Proceeds from beer sales go to Cystic Fibrosis.
Since the 1920s, residential Shadyside has been home to a mix of affluent families, young
professionals, artists, students, and apartment dwellers. The residential areas of the neighborhood
include well-maintained Victorian mansions along with modern apartments and condominiums.
The neighborhood has a compact layout, which prevents most houses from having garages.
Public transportation is available via Port Authority bus system; a busway stop is conveniently
located in the neighborhood on Negley Avenue between Ellsworth and Centre avenues.
Population (s) Served
UPMC Shadyside is located in the heart of Pittsburgh where there is a rich cultural blend of
ethnic diversity represented in the mix of patients and staff. Pittsburgh had many immigrants
from Britain, Ireland, and Germany through the first century or so of its existence. Later the
nationalities of those arriving shifted to Poles, Hungarians, Serbs, Croatians, Italians, and
Russian Jews. Most emigration to the city halted at the outbreak of World War I in 1914. Since
then relatively few people have come to Pittsburgh from other countries, even though the nation
as a whole has seen a large increase in Hispanic and Asian immigration.
While foreign-born persons made up only 7.1 percent of the city’s population between 2008-
2012, Pittsburgh retains a strong ethnic character. Many neighborhoods have a clear ethnic
identity, such as Bloomfield (Italian), the South Side and Polish Hill (Polish), and Squirrel Hill
(Jewish). The eastern neighborhoods of Point Breeze, Shadyside, and Squirrel Hill are attractive
city living areas, while other sections of the city afford views of the rivers and the Golden
Triangle from houses constructed on steep slopes.
Pittsburgh’s black population began to arrive far back in the city’s history, but its biggest growth
came in the first half of the 20th century largely through migration from the South. Blacks
predominate in several areas throughout the city, the largest being Beltzhoover, the Hill,
Homewood-Brushton, and Manchester. The black community possesses a rich cultural heritage
in jazz and art, as well as having been the sponsor of the two of greatest baseball teams in the
former Negro League the Crawfords and the Homestead Grays.

age 60 and older. Patients of UPMC Senior Care—Shadyside enjoy the advantage of having
many levels and types of care at one outpatient location.

The center’s staff includes geriatricians, geropsychiatrists, nurse practitioners, and social
workers, who work together to create a care plan tailored to each individual patient.
UPMC Senior Care Shadyside experts also provide practical tips about preventing falls; help

manage prescriptions, all on an outpatient basis.
UPMC Senior Services
To meet the often complex needs of older adults, UPMC Senior Care is one of the largest
academic and clinical geriatrics programs in the country, with approximately 25 trained
geriatricians and geriatric psychiatrists to address aging related problems.

to help elderly or disabled persons maintain their independence. The hospital provides
this community service to enable individuals to live alone with confidence and
reassurance that help is available when needed. For more information, call the Senior
Information Service at 412-623-6745.
Respite Care
This program gives families a short break from the care they provide to their older loved
ones. Respite Care offers short-stay nursing home care that includes use of a comfortable
semi-private room and 24-hour nursing care. Additional arrangements can be made for
special services such as a beauty and barber shop, physical therapy, podiatry, speech
therapy, and dentistry.
Surgical Services
UPMC Shadyside offers a wide range of surgical procedures, including robotics, as treatments
for many diseases and conditions.
In addition to general surgery, surgeons at UPMC Shadyside perform advanced procedures in
many specialties:
Cardiac surgery
Digestive disorders
Lung and thoracic disease
Neurosurgery
Oncology
Orthopedics
Urology
Vascular surgery
Robotics
Robotic surgery does not mean that a robot replaces the surgeon. It means that robotic
technology provides enhanced visualization and dexterity so that surgeons can perform many
complex procedures that would otherwise have to be performed with conventional open
incisions.
For patients, robotic surgery can mean a shorter hospital stay, less pain, less blood loss, less
scarring, and quicker recovery. Robotic surgery outcomes are consistent with those of standard
minimally invasive surgeries.
Owning the technology is the first step. It also is crucial that the hospital and its surgeons have
the expertise in using the technology. UPMC is a leader in robotic surgical technology in western
Pennsylvania. UPMC began using the da Vinci® Surgical System at UPMC Presbyterian in 2003
and moved it to UPMC Shadyside in November 2007, where it is now being used for prostate,
gynecologic, and oncology surgeries.
UPMC Shadyside has a dedicated operating room for da Vinci surgeries and a dedicated team
with specialized training and experience in robotic technology
Research at UPMC Shadyside
Cancer Research
Across the street from UPMC Shadyside, connected by the Shea Pedestrian Bridge, is Hillman
Cancer Center, headquarters for the research facilities of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer
Institute (UPCI), which works in tandem with the clinical services of UPMC Cancer
Centers. UPCI’s research programs occupy a 152,300-square-foot, three-level research pavilion
at Hillman Cancer Center; the rest of the building is devoted to clinical care for cancer patients.
Thus Hillman Cancer Center is designed to maximize collaboration among investigators, to
streamline the application of laboratory findings to patient care, and to facilitate the flow of
information about clinical experiences back to researchers for further development. With cutting-
edge research in basic science as well as clinical trials, UPCI ranks among the nation’s leaders in
funding from the National Cancer Institute (NCI). UPCI-initiated clinical research has garnered
national and international recognition for the advanced treatment of melanoma, as well as brain,
prostate, lung, head and neck, ovarian, and breast cancers.
Nursing Research
UPMC Shadyside supports nursing research in an effort to deliver the highest quality patient
care. Our research efforts are focused on maintaining or improving outcomes. Research projects
that nurses have lead or contributed to are: the use of patient-administered oral pain medication
for hip replacement patients; outcomes of patients with leukemia who are at risk for sepsis using
technology for early identification; methods to reduce anxiety, depression and PTSD symptoms
in family members functioning as surrogate decision makers in the ICU; perceptions of burnout
in oncology nurses in a hospital setting; and the impact of cardiovascular and mental health
education on cardiovascular risk factors and depression.
