From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same, the Lord’s name be praised.

PRAyER OF CONFEssION (spoken in unison) Almighty God of compassion and justice, we pray that You would take pity on us as we confess our sin. We are not the stewards that Christ calls us to be. Riches possess us while others go hungry. We mismanage Your gifts to us with our greed and strife. Your goodness is betrayed by our lust for power, and we are left feeling the guilt which is unbearable. Please forgive our sins, dear God, and help us to hear once again Jesus’ call to be faithful stewards, for it is in Christ’s name we pray.

s Those who are able are invited to stand.

Order of WorshipThe service of worship begins with the music of the prelude.

Through its power and brilliance, may you feel the majesty and glory of God; in its quietness, His peace. Once the Welcome has begun, please wait to enter the Sanctuary until the choir has processed.

ANThEMBe Still, My Soul Percy W. Whitlock

Be still, my soul, for God is near. The Great High Priest is with thee now. The Lord of Life Himself is here, before whose face the angels bow. To make thy heart His lowly throne thy Saviour God in love draws nigh. He gives Himself unto His own, for whom He once came down to die. He pleads before the mercy-seat; He pleads with God, He pleads for thee. He gives thee bread from heav’n to eat, His flesh and blood in mystery. I come, O Lord, for Thou dost call to blend my pleading prayer with Thine. To Thee I give myself, my all, and feed on Thee, and make Thee mine. Amen.

s AFFIRMATION OF FAITh The Apostles’ CreedI believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

OFFERING ANThEMIt Is Good to Give Praise Howard Helvey

It is good to give praise to the Lord, and to sing Thy name, O Most High; to show forth Thy mercy in the morning, and Thy truth in the night, upon an instrument of ten strings, upon the psaltery, with a canticle upon the harp. For Thou hast given me, O Lord, a delight in Thy doings; and in the works of Thy Hands, I shall rejoice.

About This Morning’s Music

Percy W. Whitlock (1903–1946) was an English organist, conductor, and composer. His music is a fusion of late romantic, neoclassical, and dance hall styles — with the emphasis on the late romantic. He wrote choral and organ music, symphonic music, sonatas, chamber pieces, and secular music of various sorts.

American organist and composer Howard Helvey (b. 1968) studied at the University of Missouri and the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. In addition, he was a Chautauqua Scholar, studying piano at the Chautauqua Institute on a full scholarship. His compositions are widely performed in the United States, Europe, and Asia. He is co-founder and conductor of the Cincinnati Fusion Ensemble, a professional ensemble which performs in the genres of choral music, art song, vocal chamber music, musical theater, jazz, folk music, oratorio, and chamber opera.

Mission Partner Spotlight

Paul Lundblad, while studying linguistics at the University of Pittsburgh, attended Shadyside Presbyterian Church and became active in our college ministry program. His time at SPC helped him to develop a vision for his mission commitment. He moved to northern Sweden in 2013 to work with youth in the town of Vilhelmina through our mission partner, Youth with a Mission. We welcome Paul as he joins us in worship this morning.

Give Thanks – Our focus on stewardship continues today and culminates on Celebration Sunday, October 29. Pledge cards have been mailed to members; additional cards are available in the pews, Narthex, and Sharp Atrium. Please prayerfully consider your pledge commitment and joyfully return your pledge card before October 29.

Grief support Group – Shadyside Presbyterian Church offers a Grief Support Group designed to provide encouragement and a faith-centered perspective for those who have lost a loved one. The group meets regularly to discuss a variety of subjects that are important in the grief recovery process, including the range of emotions which grief brings, and resources for moving forward. Our next gathering occurs Monday, October 23, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Craig Room. New participants are always welcome to join; there is no cost to attend the group. For more information, please contact Rev. Lynn Portz.

special Extended Connections dinner with Thanksgiving Meal - For what do you give thanks in our church? How well do you know the nooks and crannies of the building? How familiar are you with all that goes on in our sacred spaces throughout the week? Come discover and give thanks! Join us for a Thanksgiving-themed dinner from 5:15 to 6:50 p.m. on Wednesday, October 25. Please make your reservation by signing up in the Sharp Atrium or by contacting the church office by Monday, October 23. A freewill offering will be received to offset the costs of the meal. Nursery care is available. If you are able, we hope you will stay for vespers at 7:00 p.m.

Midweek vespers are held on Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel. These thirty-minute candlelight worship services, with Communion, offer a more intimate worship experience in the midst of our hectic lives. This fall, the pastors’ homilies will lead us in exploring 1 Corinthians, following the daily lectionary. Childcare is available.

young Adult Bible study – Young adults and friends of Shadyside Presbyterian Church are invited to participate in a Bible study focusing on the Book of Acts. We typically gather from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursdays in the Stamy Room. Our next meeting is Thursday, October 26. Join us as we continue to build community through study. For more information, please contact Rev. John Magnuson.

An Invitation to Membership – A class for inquirers occurs Sunday, October 29, from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. in the Chapel. (Infant care and children’s Christian Education classes run concurrently.) New members will be received on Sunday, October 29, and recognized in worship that day. If you would like to register for the class, please contact Gwen Missouri in the church office.

Chili After Church – On Sunday, October 29, a favorite congregational event returns. Once again the Parish Hall will be filled with the aroma of delicious chili, chowder, and chocolate brownies. Do you have a favorite recipe that you would be willing to make for this event? We are looking for volunteers to make at least three quarts of chili or chowder – beef, chicken, turkey, or vegetarian. If you would prefer to make brownies for dessert, that would be wonderful. Not a cook or a baker? Come and enjoy; there will be plenty to share! Make your reservations today in the Sharp Atrium or call the church office. If you could lend us a crockpot to keep these goodies piping hot, please let us know. There is no cost to attend.

News and Notes

Sunday, October 22, 2017 9

Christmas Wreaths – The nursery school is taking orders for beautiful 22- to 24-inch Fraser fir Christmas wreaths. Wreaths may be ordered with or without a red velvet bow and picked up in the Parish Hall the first week of December. Order forms are available at our Time of Fellowship and are due by Friday, October 27. The cost is $25 each, or $30 with a bow. All sales benefit the nursery school’s scholarship fund.

Garfield Workday – On Saturday, November 4, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., we will partner with Open Hand Ministries and Garfield Community Farm in an all-church workday. Volunteers will rehabilitate a home, work in an urban garden, and participate in landscaping projects. All ages are encouraged to participate; no experience is required. For additional information, please contact Rev. Todd Leach.

Fall Family Costume Party – All Shadyside families and friends are invited to a costume party Sunday, November 5, in the Parish Hall. Infants to elementary-age children and their families are invited to arrive at 4:30 p.m. to enjoy a time of games, food, and fellowship. Children and grown-ups are encouraged to wear costumes. Pizza and beverages will be provided; families are asked to bring salads or side dishes to serve 8. To RSVP by Thursday, November 2, please sign up in the Sharp Atrium or contact Ellen Allston.

Remembering loved Ones: November 5 – Christians throughout the world celebrate All Saints’ Day in honor of all the saints, both known and unknown. In most Protestant churches, it is celebrated on the first Sunday of November. Protestants regard all Christians, both past and present, as saints. As we solemnly remember all those who have died in the past year, we also focus on Christ’s victory over death. While the festival acknowledges the reality of death, we emphasize our hope in the Resurrection and our place in the “communion of saints.”

• During the All Saints’ Sunday morning service at 11:00 a.m., we will remember those members of Shadyside Presbyterian Church who have gone on to the Church Triumphant in the past calendar year.

• On the afternoon of All Saints’ Sunday, at 3:00 p.m., the Chancel Choir will sing the beloved setting of the Requiem by composer Gabriel Fauré. We invite the congregation to submit the names of any deceased family members whom they would like to have acknowledged in the afternoon bulletin. Please submit the names to Gwen Missouri in the church office before Friday, October 27.

Warmth drive for veterans day Weekend – Calling all coats! Our mission partner, Veterans Place of Washington Boulevard, needs donations of winter coats for the vets who spend the days and nights outside in the elements. You can drop off any new or gently used winter coats on or before Friday, November 10 — sizes L, XL, and XXL, please. A collection bin for the contributions will be located in the Sharp Atrium.

God and Family First (GAFF) on second sundays at sPC – On the second Sunday of the month, join other families at 9:30 a.m. for a child-friendly family fellowship in the Parish Hall. A light breakfast will be provided to help you start the morning. This opportunity is a great way to meet other families; while children form and explore new friendships, adults may discover other exciting things happening at Shadyside. Our next gathering occurs on Sunday, November 12.

Raking leaves – All ages are welcome to join the youth and young adults on Sunday, November 12, as we spend the afternoon helping fellow members of the congregation with some fall yard work. Following worship, we will meet in the Hulme Room for a light lunch before departing for various homes. We will return to the church by 3:30 p.m. Please bring rakes and gloves if you have them, and sign up in the Sharp Atrium. For more information, please contact Rev. John Magnuson.

young Adult “Friendsgiving” – Young adults and friends are invited to celebrate Thanksgiving a little early with their church friends and family on Friday, November 17, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Come and enjoy an evening of great food and fellowship at Mansions on Fifth (one block from the church). Dinner includes appetizers, soup, salad, entrée, and dessert, for a cost of $25 per person. RSVP in the Sharp Atrium by Thursday, November 2, or contact Rev. John Magnuson for more information.

host an International student for Thanksgiving – Do you have room at your Thanksgiving table? Consider welcoming an international student or scholar to your home — simply include them in your traditions, get to know them, and share Christ’s love with them. They will never forget it, and neither will you! If you are able to offer this special hospitality to international students, please contact Rev. Todd Leach through the church office before Tuesday, November 14, or sign up in the Sharp Atrium.

East End Cooperative Ministry (EECM) Food Pantry Thanksgiving Collection – Bags will be distributed on Sundays, November 12 and 19, with a list of suggested donation items attached to each bag. Please return the filled bags during the Thanksgiving Eve Service on Wednesday, November 22, or to the church office during the week of Thanksgiving. If you would prefer to make a monetary donation, checks should be made payable to “Shadyside Presbyterian Church” with “EECM Food Collection” on the memo line, and placed in the offering plate on Sunday, November 19.

letters of joys and concerns are on the table in the Narthex. Please take time to sign the letters.

daily Prayer – As a part of our church-wide discipleship, we follow the daily lectionary in the Book of Common Worship Daily Prayer, which also contains prayers and intimate worship services. Feel free to pick up one of the books from the bookcase in the Parlor (accessible via the Sharp Atrium) for a suggested donation of $10. (Checks may be placed in an offering plate and made payable to “Shadyside Presbyterian Church” with “Daily Lectionary” in the memo line.) We hope you will join us on this journey of discipleship!

Prayer Gatherings occur on Tuesdays from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., and on Thursdays from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. You are invited to join us for a time of silent and spoken prayers, as we bring our concerns before God. If you cannot be with us in person, we encourage you to remember the congregation in your prayers at these same times. This is one of the many ways we can express our care for one another.
