Oracle OpenWorld 13 Outtake: Upgrading to EBS 12.2.2 Oracle Corporation’s announcement at OpenWorld 2013 that Oracle R12.2 is now generally available has sent the Oracle ERP community scrambling for more information on how what anR12.2 upgrade looks like. Upgrading to Oracle 12.2.2 is a process that will take several stages, both at database and application levels. In early 2012 IT Convergence became an  Oracle R12.2 Beta Tester , giving us first-hand experience with the upgrade. Taking our own experience into account, today we bring you a brief description of each one stage of an Oracle R12.2.2 upgrade. Oracle OpenWorld 13 Outtake: Upgrading to EBS 12.2.2Oracle Corporation’s announcement at OpenWorld 2013 that Oracle R12.2 is now generally

available has sent the Oracle ERP community scrambling for more information on how what anR12.2

upgrade looks like.

Upgrading to Oracle 12.2.2 is a process that will take several stages, both at database and applicationlevels. In early 2012 IT Convergence became an Oracle R12.2 Beta Tester , giving us first-hand

experience with the upgrade.

Taking our own experience into account, today we bring you a brief description of each one stage of

an Oracle R12.2.2 upgrade.

During our trials we used the following environment:

• Database Tier: 8 CPU 32 GB RAM

• Apps Tier: 12 VCPU and 12 GB of RAM

• OS: Oracle Linux x86-64 5.7• Database Type: NO-RAC

Oracle R12.2 Upgrade Stage I: The Database Upgrade

Upgrading the database to the 11.2.0.3 version is a critical part of the process. In our case, we handled

this task independently from the R12.2 upgrade, since we decided to take on the database tasks a few

weeks before we started the application upgrade.

Document ID: 1058763.1 - Interoperability Notes EBS 12.0 and 12.1 with Database 11gR2

• DB Size before upgrade: 525 GB

• DB Size after upgrade: 530 GB

Note that the database upgrade took approximately 8 hours, not taking into account the time required to

set up the OS and install the Oracle Home.

Oracle R12.2 Upgrade Stage II: Preparing the Database for the Upgrade

Some of the database patches are mandatory, since they add necessary features for R12.2 and Online

Patching. Make sure you comply with all the requirements included in this document:

Oracle R12.2 Upgrade Stage II: Application Upgrade

As it is customary with version upgrades, the program Rapiwizard is used to install this technology layer

and create the APPL_TOP directories (we recommend having at least 70GB of space in the destination

file system.) This new version manages two base directories:

• fs1: by default, this is the RUN EDITION

• fs2: by default, this is the PATCH EDITION

In a typical set up, the size of fs1 and fs2 is of approximately 30GB each.

Afterwards it’s time to apply the driver that will run the application upgrade (u10124646.drv)

Oracle R12.2 Upgrade Stage III: Online Patching

This step allows us to enable “Online Patching”. Before running the procedure, it’s necessary to validate

that the environment is ready for this feature. We can do so by running the “Online Patching

Enablement - Readiness Reports”, which check if the database currently complies with the OP

requirements. It’s important to solve any issues that may be detected at this point before moving on with

the procedure.

We will also need to increase the free space in some of the tablespaces. This is an estimation of the

space you will need, according to our experience:

• SYSTEM Tablespace: at least 25 GB

• APPS_TS_SEED Tablespace: at least 5 GB

• APPS_TS_SEED Tablespace: at least 15 GB

At this point we are ready to enable Online Patching, simply by applying patch 13543062.

Oracle R12.2 Upgrade Stage IV: Upgrading to Oracle Applications 12.2.2

Before moving forward with the patch to bring your environment to 12.2, you will need to make sure to

apply all the pre-requisites included in the document “Oracle E-Business Suite Technology Stack

Release Notes for Release 12.2”, including database and application patches.

Afterwards, we are finally ready to upgrade to 12.2.2, using the patches 16207672 and 16207673.

Finally, it is worth noting that the final stage of the process (that is, actually upgrading to 12.2.2) is

completed by using “Online Patching”  – meaning this will be the first upgrade that you will be able to

carry out online. Undoubtedly there is an impact on performance, but in our experience, it has proven to

be manageable.
