OVERVIEW OF CONTRIBUTIONS TO TEACHING, RESEARCH AND SERVICE My teaching and research pursuits have been largely shaped by my belief in the importance of engaging key stakeholders, both within the university and the broader community. Most of my contributions in both teaching and research can be characterized as community engaged scholarship. Community Engaged Scholarship encompasses intellectual and creative activities that generate, validate, synthesize and apply knowledge through partnerships with people and organizations outside of the academy www.cescholarship.ca.

With respect to teaching, I engaged community and health system stakeholders in the design and delivery of undergraduate and graduate curriculum in the areas of health care delivery and health policy. My teaching evaluations from students were extremely positive and I believe this is due in large part to the fact that the real world application of the material came alive through the input and examples provided by stakeholders. The commitment to involve key health system decision makers in the design and delivery of the curriculum for a Masters degree in Applied Health Services Research led to the program receiving significant funding support from CIHR and CHSRF My involvement in classroom teaching was reduced to the occasional guest lecture following my appointment as Associate Vice President Academic in 2006. However, my recent role with the development of a Teaching and Learning Framework for the university reaffirmed my belief in the importance of engaging all stakeholders in the teaching and learning enterprise, and I am enjoying the opportunity to apply some of my new knowledge in the classroom setting. Most recently this involved the development and delivery of University 1010 in the First Year Success Pilot Program offered at MUN in the fall of 2012 and 2013. With respect to research, I have had 3 main areas of focus over the course of my career. Health promotion research (in particular heart health) was important at the beginning of my academic career. However, over time, my focus moved to my current research areas of information systems in health care delivery and public engagement in decision making about health care resource allocation. My activities in all 3 research areas shared the following characteristics: (a) partnerships with people and agencies outside of the university; (b) research funding from both peer-reviewed funding councils and community agencies; (c) graduate student training; (d) dissemination activities that included peer reviewed publications and conference abstracts, development of tools/frameworks to guide practice and delivery of presentations to non-academic audiences; and (e) impact on the practice area. For example: (i) our work in developing an Evaluation Framework for the Canadian Heart Health Initiative provided the basis for development of a Canadian National Framework and a G8 database on heart health intervention that supported practice internationally in this area; (ii) the Evaluation Framework for Electronic Health Records initiatives led to my participation on the National Committee on Benefits-Driven Evaluation for INFOWAY (the organization charged with promoting and funding the development of Electronic Health Records initiatives across Canada). Locally, the framework has guided the development, implementation and evaluation of electronic health records initiatives by the Newfoundland Center for Health Information and contributed to their national recognition as a centre of excellence in the field; and (iii) The Framework for Engaging the Public in Dialogue about Health Care Coverage and Health Care Decisions led to an invitation for me to serve as a research mentor for senior executive team members in the Central Health Regional Health Authority (CRHA). Subsequently, the CRHA has formally adopted a stakeholder engagement component in its decision making model and is seeking research funding to continue work in this area. One of my graduate students, Peter Wilton, recently completed his master’s thesis examining two different mechanisms of public engagement in Central Newfoundland and Labrador.

With respect to service, I have served as a participant or leader on a wide variety of academic and administrative committees within the university and the broader community. Since my appointment as
