In Cyber Literacy: Evaluating the Reliability of Data, Susan Regan Gregson defines Cyberliteracy as:

“knowing where to go to find reliable and accurate resources on the Internet”

In Lisa Mulka’s new book: Cyber Literacy for the Digital Age she places further emphasis on new technological advancements in today’s society:

“Cyber Literacy for the Digital Age equips students with the knowledge, tools and resources they will need to adapt, grow, and stay safe in today’s ever-changing technological world”

CYBERLITERACY:

“Cyberliteracy means voicing an opinion about what these technologies should become and being an active, not passive participant.”

To be cyberliterate, an individual must be “more than a user” of technology and must “become an active participant in the discussion.”

Cyberbullying:

Teen Internet Statistics:

55% of teens have given out personal info to someone they don’t know, including photos and physical descriptions

29% of teens have posted mean info, embarrassing photos or spread rumors about someone

29% have been stalked or contacted by a stranger or someone they don’t know

24% have had private or embarrassing info made public without their permission

22% have been cyberpranked

Cyberbullying:Cyberbullying can happen

through the use of e-mail, cell phone text (SMS) and multimedia messages (MMS), instant messaging (IM), defamatory Web logs (Blogs), personal Web sites, and online personal polling sites.

Case Study:

John C. LeBlanc- Professor at Dalhousie University

Examined 41 cases of suicide since 2003 that involved cyberbullying

All cases involved teenagers between the age of 13 to 18.

78% of the cases the individual committed suicide were bullied both at school and online and 17% were only targeted on the internet

Examples:

In 2012 a British Columbia teen took her own life a few weeks after posting a YouTube video describing how she has been tormented by bullying online and struggling with depression.

In 2010, an 18 year old Rutgers University student in New Jersey jumped from a bridge after he discovered his roommate used a webcam to spy on him.

In 2008, a 13 year old Missouri teenager hanged herself after being the target of a hoax on MySpace.

Learning Objective:

Cyberliteracy should be implemented into the school’s curriculum and schools should have information sessions for students, staff and parents about cyberliteracy as well as issues surrounding online security, privacy and cyberbullying
