HOWARD SAFIR ’63 Chairman and Chief Executive Officer SafirRosetti, Omnicom Group Inc. Howard Safir is currently chairman and chief executive offi- cer of SafirRosetti, Omnicom Group Inc. SafirRosetti is a pre- mier company serving the security and investigation needs of its clients both nationally and internationally. He also serves as consultant to the chair of Choice Point, a leading provider of cre- dential verification and identification services. Howard was appointed 39th police commissioner of the City of New York by Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani on April 15, 1996. In his four years as police commissioner, he achieved a 38 percent reduction in major crime and reduced homicides by 44 per- cent, the lowest level in three decades. Commissioner Safir began his law enforcement career in 1965 as a special agent assigned to the New York office of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, a forerunner of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Barry Gordon has more than 32 yearsof investment experience. After sever-al years with New York HanseaticCorporation as a senior security analyst specializing in aviation andtechnology, Barry joined NationalAviation and Technology Corporationas a portfolio manager in 1973.

He was instrumental in the formationof American Fund Advisors in 1979and is now its chairman and presi-dent. ANDREW ’66 AND ROSALAND KARLAN ’67The Karlans met in history class during Roz’s freshmanyear and have been married for 34 years. Drew graduat-ed with a B.A. in biology in 1966, Roz a B.S.Ed. in ele-mentary education in 1967.

After graduating from Hofstra, Drew (an ROTC cadet) wasassigned to active duty in the U.S. Army. After serving, he and

Roz moved back to New York, where he began a career in the chemical and pharmaceuticalfields and she continued hers in education. Ray joined Schumacher as manager of financial planning and analysis. In 1986he was promoted to vice president, marketing services and administration. By1994 he was again promoted to vice president, corporate marketing. In 1997 theboard of directors named Ray senior vice president, marketing as part of a seniormanagement realignment. As the company went through a restructuring inAugust 1998 Ray took on the responsibility of acting president for the newInterior Design Group.

HOFSTRA BIDS FAREWELL TO ALLAN TOD GITTLESON

Hofstra University is saddened by the passing of Chairman EmeritusAllan Tod Gittleson. A generous and dedicated member of the

Hofstra University Board of Trustees since 1967, ChairmanEmeritus Gittleson served from 1973 to 1975, and was namedChairman Emeritus in 1992. He was the founder and CEO ofthe Hofstra Health Dome. In 1979 Hofstra’s life sciences build-ing was dedicated in his honor.

Mr. Gittleson was the creator and a major benefactor of theUniversity’s Distinguished Academic Scholar Program, an active sup-

porter of the NOAH program for under-represented student populations, theProgram for Higher Education of the Disabled, and the School of Law. He wasnamed an Honorary Alumnus of Hofstra in 1987.

Mr. Gittleson is survived by his wife, Mildred, daughters June and Nancy ’82, ’84,three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Former Hofstra University Trusteeand American University PresidentGeorge H. Williams passed away onMay 18, 2003, at the age of 85.

George earned a bachelor of arts in1939 and continued a strong rela-tionship with the University. Inaddition to serving as a trustee, hewas honored with the George M.Estabrook Award in 1961 and wasnamed Hofstra’s Alumnus of theYear in 1965. In 1969 he was pre-sented with an honorary doctorate.

He is survived by his wife, Molly;children Mary Beth, Jeanne, Kevinand Stephen; and five grandchildren.
