TRAIL MANNERS

Good manners is the grease that helps people get along with each other, avoiding friction. • 18 & UNDER MUST WEAR A HELMET. • Be aware of the effect your actions have on

others, their horses and their property. • Do not upset your co-riders’ horses. • Ride at a quiet, controlled pace. • NEVER PASS OTHERS AT A GALLOP. • Keep a safe distance… don’t crowd others. • STAY WITH A DISMOUNTED RIDER • Respect the property of others. (ie: lawns, farm

fields, crops, groves, livestock, etc.) • Leave gates as you found them: Open gates

should remain open. Closed gates should remain closed.

• DO NOT PASS THE TRAIL BOSS or drop behind the drag rider.

• Stay with the trail boss on the same side of the road. Do not split the road.

• Clean up after your horse. Pick up manure or spread it depending on where you are. Do not clean your trailers out when you unload.

• NO PROFANITY AT ANY SFTR EVENTS. REMEMBER! If you mind your manners others won’t mind when you and your horse return to ride.

HORSE CHARITIES

The SFTR donates to these charities once a year. These charities are badly in need of donations. Please try to send what you can to help them. Thanks from the SFTR.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Hey Trail Riders, It’s that time of the year again, time to nominate a NEW Board. A group of people that will continue the SFTR tradition of a full calendar of rides and ac-tivities that make us one of the most outstanding horse clubs around. That is not only my opinion but it has been said many times by many different peo-ple. This is your club. Holding a ride, participating in meetings and events and serving on a committee or the board are some of the ways that we all get to know each other. Knowing many other members is how we can best nominate someone that could bring your hopes for the club to the table. So nominate someone to help make decisions for our club. This brings up another thought, what do we want for the future of OUR club? Some of you joined to participate in specific rides, like the beach rides or the Everglades Ride or a specific parades, like the ones that we get to decorate our horse and ourselves, like the Homestead Tree Lighting and the Orange Bowl Parade, or one of our charitable event like Autism, St. Jude or Toy Drive. For what ever reason you join, it’s our club and the more we participate the better it is for all of us. Best of all the community loves the SFTR and we love it too. Speaking of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the Ride is coming up Saturday March 7th and we have added a new link on our website to donate and give credit to the member that referred you. You do know that the per-son that collects the most in donations gets a prize at the end of the ride. Happy trails,

Mike & BB

Adrianna Rue- In her 3rd year of cheerleading, her Dyna2ty team took a 2nd place in the American Champi-onships in Daytona; and a 2nd in the Spirit Cheer competi-tion in Ft. Lauderdale. Well done! Champ, in the Open div. State Fair results to follow soon! We heard Rachel Shearing's Jery, won in his 1st Open division canine agility meet & did 12 weave poles- and had a Q. Awesome pup! At the Rodeo, 8yr old Janelis Egozcue won 3rd in the Buck-off, and our SFTR junior Sarah Rotella, was crowned the new Rodeo Queen! What a wonderful year ahead awaits both these young ladies. Emma Brower and her handsome TB Sunny won a 1st, 2nd, & 3rd in the 1 meter jump competition in the HITS show in Ocala. They are a great pair to watch for the future! Locally, Danny Medina's son, Diego, earned his green belt in Tae Kwon Do – well done! A not so funny thing happened to Sharon Perrin when she was in Jamaica recently....she felt the earthquake that was south of Cuba - the one some claimed to have felt in Miami. On a recent very windy weekend, Craig Priest left his stirrups to shoot clays, and his team won the 3-man blind match. We have members involved in many different activities –

AROUND THE PADDOCK… Activities Increase as Our Winter Yields to Warmer Days

ask them about it sometime. Our club has committee people who try to inform or help our members on a variety of activities of the SFTR. The Emergency Management committee chair, Amanda Andujar, is looking for a replacement for her position, as their family is moving away this summer. The job en-tails letting the members know about different emergen-cy care, transport, barn issues, etc that may arise and providing a site link for individual research. This volun-teer may use current internet info, guest speakers, clin-ics, etc as a source of info to relate to our membership. (This position is not Hurricane Stall related, as that po-sition is generously handled by Debi Priest.) Anyone interested in being the Emergency Management chair, please contact any Board member or officer – we could really use the help! Remember our SFTR General Meeting for March is on Monday Mar. 2, 7pm dinner, 8pm meeting. Find out what events are coming up and how you can join in the action. Our special guest speaker will be Adrienne Hunsberger, from the Extension office. She will be identifying poisonous plants in our area, how to eradi-cate them, how to spot toxicity in animals and possible medical protocols. Horses graze on almost everything, and not all of it is safe for them to ingest. Come learn what you can do to keep your pastures safer for your stock, and how to spot these plants on the trail!

10TH ANNIVERSARY AUTISM RIDE On February 8, 2020, we celebrated the 10 year anni-

versary of the Autism Ride! We had close to 80 riders

on a cool overcast day, as the Sifuentes family wel-

comed us back to Rancho Victoria for the second year.

The trailers started rolling in early and filled the parking

area, and registration went smoothly with the help of

Sonni Peles and Denise Bourgoigne-Kanke. Bill Guz-

man did a wonderful job taking pictures of the group

and guests before, during and after the ride.

JC Viña was the trail boss again and led the group on

a safe ride. Upon returning, the riders entered the arena

to show off their horses and wave to the guests who

were seated in the bleachers awaiting the

upcoming shows. The Homestead Everglades Posse la-

dies then entered the arena with the military flags and

Sarah Rotella, the new Rodeo Queen, came in carrying

the American flag. They all lined up and Pablo

Sifuentes went on the sing the National Anthem, and

did an amazing job! Next came the presentation of

Spanish and Friesian horses ridden by Pedro & Victor

Sifuentes, along with several other talented riders show-

ing off their majestic dancing horses, as 2 young ladies

performed a beautiful folkloric dance.

Following the shows, everyone lined up for a deli-

cious lunch, courtesy of Viña & Sons. JC Viña has

been providing our lunch every year since the very first

event. We had a delicious menu of smoked ribs, pulled

pork and chicken sandwiches, baked beans, chips and

coleslaw. Pig Floyd’s BBQ prepared all the food and

we had more than enough to go around.

Every year, this event gets bigger and better and I

need to thank all those who help make it happen. On

Friday evening, Alex Egozcue showed up with all our

sodas donated from Pepsi. He was a great help set-

ting up coolers, as well as all the tables and chairs,

with Eddie Garcia. Carolina Puig, Martha Insignares

and Olga Horn helped with all the bandanas and gift

bags. On Saturday, Nelson Rodriguez set up his DJ

equipment and kept the music going all day long.

Norbert Perets & Snowie’s stayed busy till the very

end and donated all his proceeds at the end of the

day! Megan Barnes & Carolina Puig organized the

raffle & auction prizes, and also sold raffle tickets

along with Juana Cabrera. The

Cowhunter whip brought in $845 this year!

This year, we had a program book with articles

about the history of the Autism Ride and the work

that Whispering Manes does. We also had business

advertisements and Robbie’s added their 20% dis-

count in their ad. Between the proceeds of the pro-

gram book, donations, raffles & food, we raised

$18,478 for Whispering Manes. Domingo Hernandez

deserves a special mention, as he alone, collected

$7,250 as well as bringing numerous valuable raffle

& auction items.

Thank you to all who participated, donated, baked,

volunteered and helped make this happen. Whisper-

ing Manes will have more than enough funds to offer

scholarships for therapy to different

special needs students in the community.

This is why we ride!!!

Until next year….Happy Trails!

MARDI GRAS WITH A WESTERN TWIST

Excited that this was the first Trail Boss event for my-self and for Dennys Cabrera, we could not have hoped for a better ride. We gathered at Larry & Penny Thompson Park and were delighted as always with Ben's company, his help, and the delicious array of doughnuts he brought for everyone. Dennys made sure we had a breakfast before the ride by bringing pasteli-tos, croquetas & coffee; and we had plenty of water for the ride. We tacked up & left at 10am with just enough sunshine filtering through the clouds to keep us com-fortable along the cool breezy way. Most of the ride was along a series of canals, where we saw people fish-ing & lots of wildlife – including birds, ducks, iguanas, and an alligator. There was an abundance of turkey vul-tures at Mt. Trashmore- but thankfully the stiff breeze kept the smells going away from us. We were dressed cowboy/cowgirl style for Mardi Gras, & it was fun wav-ing to the people who ran to their back fences to watch our ten riders leisurely ride by, and interesting to talk to the bicycle riders we passed along the way. We all stayed close for safety at road crossings, at the canal gates & bridges – making sure everyone felt secure and

could have a good time. We even packed extra water in case a rider ran short along the way. We are Trail Riders, and look out for each other! At Black Point almost 15 more SFTR & friends joined us for lunch, & we had arranged for everyone to sit together by the water. That way we could all watch our horses while we ate at the Grill and even answer questions from the public about our rides, the breed of our horses, their care and their unique per-sonalities. I want to thank all the shuttle drivers who came to assist the one-way riders, and for the parents & families who helped make the lunch stop a success. After lunch we took a different route back to the park, and arrived tired & hungry. Lucky for us there were still pastries & donuts left-over from breakfast, so we finished them off in celebration of a great ride with good friends. Exhausted, but thrilled that the weather was so nice and our group was so wonderful, we each headed for home. Thank you Ben, Juana & family, Sarah & her family & all the riders for making our first TB event a success. Can't wait to do it again!

We gathered at Pine Lake, inside the Everglades Natl. Park, and while tacking-up were greeted by Ben and hot doughnuts. What a great way to start a ride! Colby Stroud & Mike Maldonado were our fearless Trail Bosses, and did an excellent job of leading our herd of 7 (including new rider Raimundo T.) along the narrow palmetto lined trail into the outback. Fearless was Comanche, as Colby gave us a whoa, seeing a 4' gator in our puddled path. The pack squeezed to a halt, and slowly one-by-one we filed past the lounging reptile as it wallowed half sub-merged in the clear water on the far side of our trail. We headed onward...he never moved. The breeze was cool and the clear skies peeked through the tall pines as we finally emerged into the grassland section of the ride. The dense and saddle-high weeds left no easy way to progress, so we took a trail running along the pine woods until the trail turned west toward the deer mounds. Took some searching, but Mike & Colby

ALL WHO WANDER ARE NOT LOST found a safe semi-clear area by which we could ride up the mound, and we meandered most of the way around atop the mound looking out at the expanse of untouched Everglades terrain. There might have been python skel-etons beneath us, but the overgrowth was thick & fet-lock high, and so we couldn't see any. The sun to our backs we scampered down from the mound and Mike headed us back into the shaded forest. Enjoying the loop back into the woodlands we shared stories & songs as we rode, and only made one wrong turn – which was quickly corrected and provided a source of laughter. We were not lost, we were having an adventure! After about 11 miles we were once again at Pine Lake and took a group photo to commemorate the terrific ride. If you haven't done this ride, you need to, as it is a local gem of three ecosystems along one trail... and even better with good friends!

grooming and the farrier. She has not yet been tried under saddle. She has made an amazing transformation since we rescued her. Gitana’s dropped hip doesn’t seem to bother

her at all, and is much less noticeable since she’s gained her weight back. RESCUE STORY: Gitana was a stray who found her way

to a SW Miami-Dade ranch on February 4, 2018. She was emaciated, with a body score of a 1 on the Henneke scale, and arrived with a dropped hip.

Our formal parades are over for this season, but there is one more make-up parading event that we encourage eve-ryone to do - the open-ing ceremony at the Mi-ami-Dade Cattle Show, at Tropical Park, on Sat/Sun, April 18 & 19; 12noon- 1pm. Mike Maldonado will TB this special event in which we present the colors and ride the arena at Tropical Park to open the festivities both days. ALL SFTR members are invited to join in the fun, be introduced & ride around the huge arena to thrill the international spec-tators. Meet at 11am in the rear parking area – enter

the park off Miller Dr. and follow the road to the right, past the baseball & soccer fields. You will see a sign for the barn on your right & a check-in guard. Be prepared to show your current Coggins papers (or in your phone) !! Dress cowgirl/cowboy and have your horse well tacked. English attire & tack is also welcomed! Boots, bandana, & hat or helmet please. Juniors 18-under must wear a helmet. This is a walk/trot or oth-er gait and not a wild-run...so even juniors or slower horses are encouraged to attend! We will need flag carriers, gate & banner help, and would really appre-ciate assistance from non-riding members. Parade Team members receive credit whether riding or help-ing. After the presentation, the participants are encour-aged to join in a meet-and-greet with the public out-side the arena. We have done this each year and it is a hit with the families and gives us time to not only show our horses, but share our enthusiasm for riding. We will have water & a snack available after the event, and there is plenty of chicken, ribs, and fair-type foods for sale on site. Please call Mike (305-331-7599) and let him know you will attend, so he may credit Parade Team members accordingly, and re-serve the flag of your choice. Let's all thank Miami Medical Consultants for hav-ing been our sponsor again this season, and we appre-ciate their support for our Parade Team. Meanwhile, if anyone needs a parade shirt, bandana/slide, or tack...please contact myself (Lisa 786-271-4933) or Bonny (305-233-1897) so we can get you ready for the up-coming new season.

IMPORTANT BOARD MEETINGS BEFORE THE BANQUET . . . LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD

We are a few Board meetings away from the Ban-quet, & there are many issues & plans your Board is managing to provide a full calendar of events & have a wonderful banquet in May. Come to a Board meeting and let us know how we can improve our club, or if you are running for office, come sit in on a Board meeting for experience. The March 9 Board meeting will be hosted by Lisa Morgan, at 10500 SW 103 Pl. From the turnpike or coming from the west on 152 St, make a right on 102 Ave at the light. (Coral Reef High will be on your left at the light.) From 102 Ave make a right on 103 Place and follow the road all the way around until it finally bends left. House is on the left, only one with a ramp to the sidewalk. Please RSVP to Lisa Morgan 786-271-4933 so she may plan the meal. Social 7pm, meeting 8pm. The April 13 Board meeting will be hosted by Gin-ger Krenz, and will be held at Sonny & Bonny George Jr's home, 16990 SW 170 Ave. From Krome Ave go

east on 168 St. Make a right on 170 Ave (bad road & speed bumps). Second house on the left. Pass the house and use the 2nd gate by the pasture. Drive all the way to the back of the house to park. Please RSVP to Ginger Krenz so she knows how much food to prepare: 305-773-9013. Social 7pm, meeting 8pm. Your current Board has worked very hard this year to provide a wide variety of activities, short & long rides, camping, fund raising, parades, & guest speakers this year to meet the interests of our members. If you have ideas to finish out this year, something for next year, concepts that would improve the SFTR & include more of our diverse membership, then PLEASE come to a Board meeting and have your voice heard! If you plan to run for the Board or an office (elections start in Mar.), then this would be a good way to see what hap-pens in a meeting and how things are developed & planned. All SFTR members can always attend Board meetings, so join us and offer your ideas to make our club the best it can be, for everyone!

HOMESTEAD RODEO PARADE ROUND-UP

Our hometown Rodeo Parade signals the end of this season's formal parades, & the Trail Riders displayed one of our ideals – it's all about family! Our banner was proudly carried by Deborah Brunson, daughter Gloria & her daughters, Savan-nah & Kaitlyn. Michelle McDaniel graciously loaned her truck as our safety vehicle & it was driven by the Lauzurique family, as their son Ja-son joined us as a safety walker. Vicky was part of the crew, as was Richard - there with his wife Pa-tricia, who was on Poop-Patrol with her partner-in

-crime, Jessica. Augie & granddaughter Hannah were in the mix as well! Heidi honored us by car-rying the USA flag, Colby had the POW, Barbara strutted the Vietnam Vets & our Pres. Mike Maldo-nado had the Fla. flag. Young Abby was a hit once again, as were Dennys, Lynn, & JC. Thank you all for coming out on a tough weekend to share our club with the community. It was great to hear from the crowd and other parade riders back at the Ro-deo grounds, how good we looked and what a great impression we made. Many thanks again!!

~Bonny George, Jr.
