WAYS TO Keep Faith AliveCall a family member you have not spoken to in a while.

When school starts back that's a signal for us to start back with Bible study and small groups. So here's your chance to get connected with God's Word, a community of believers and most of all our God. Check out the offerings below. Invite a friend. You can sign up online or on the brochures around the church.

DENOMINATIONS GALOREWednesdays from 6:30 - 8:00pm // room 125Beginning August 21 and Ending October 16

Led by Baxter HurleyI’m not too discouraged by different denominations. All Christian churches hold many beliefs and practices in common. It is the differences that spice things upand allow us to worship God in ways that reflect our uniqueness. For example, I don’t appreciate when incense is burned in a church service. It isn’t that I’magainst using sensory perception in worship — but incense drives my sinuses crazy, and, to be frank, I like breathing. And while I am not musically gifted, I do love music and wouldn’t want to regularly attend a church that bans instruments. And yes, such places of worship exist for those who are really old fashioned, deeply contemplative, or other things that I am not.If you have ever wondered about the differences between Christian denominations, my next class is for you. As we examine the differences in major American denominations, we will simultaneously study our own beliefs and practices more thoroughly. The only text needed will be your Bible, but if you like extra work you can read Handbook of Denominations in the United States — 400 pages of pure fun.

THE EPIC OF EDEN: UNDERSTANDING THE OLD TESTAMENT

Wednesday mornings at 10am ANDWednesday evenings at 6:30pmBeginning August 14 // Room 97

Led by Teresa EdwardsAs Christians we spend a lot of time in the New Testament and the Gospels. This makes a lot of sense. Yet to truly understand the Gospel story, we need a sense of what the Old Testament offers and how it shapes our understanding of the New Testament. In addition, the Old Testament contains stories that rival some of the most exciting movies we see on the big screen! In this class you will:• Gain a rich understanding of the context in which

the Old Testament was written• “Organize your closet,” making sense of all the

Old Testament parts, pieces, and stories you’ve accumulated over time

• Discover how the the big story of Scripture has serious implications for our present. Just because it happened in the past doesn’t mean it stays there!

PRAYER CONCERNS

THE “OLD” SONGSBy Cannon A. McClain

August is a wonderful time at FHUMC! Throughout the month, one can hear the sounds of familiar tunes floating out of the sanctuary and into the hearts of all present. As the choir director, people often come to me to discuss these old songs and their place in the church community at large. Folks sometimes worry that the hymns they hold so dear won’t make it into the hearts and minds of younger generations. I have a couple of responses to that! First, I would argue that good music has the habit of sticking around. The oldest song in our hymnal is #184, Of the Father’s Love Begotten, and was written at some point in the 11th century by an anonymous monk. You’d be right in guessing that we don’t sing a lot of music from the 11th century, but this hymn has stuck around. And why? Because it’s good music. The same goes for Amazing Grace (1778), Standing on the Promises (1886), and Victory in Jesus (1939). There are any number of songs from these years that no one knows anymore, and most of them were never much good anyway! But these have stayed with us, because good music always finds its way into new ears. My second response is that younger generations ARE enjoying the “old” songs. For one, the Chancel Choir is directed by a man that would still have trouble renting a car! I’ll close with a story. At this year’s Vacation Bible School, the children would start each evening by singing and dancing along to a variety of songs. One of those songs was our old favorite, Leaning on the Everlasting Arms. Now no one told the kids they were learning a song written 150 years ago, but they danced and sang their hearts out all the same! Good music sticks around, and we’re always making new “old” songs.

MISSIONS OFFERINGSchool is getting into full swing in Bibb County! As Christians we are aware of our duty to provide for the children of our community and we endeavor to meet this responsibility through our Backpack Ministry, primarily serving the elementary age group. The Mentor’s Project of Bibb County exists to address some of the many needs of our disadvantaged middle and high school youth. It is a dropout prevention program that matches successful, caring adults from the community with at-risk students. These role models provide encouragement and motivation to students who need additional support and assist them in reaching their full academic, social and personal potential.

The Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce initiated the Mentor’s Project in 1990 to address the Chamber’s concerns for the success of students in the community and the high dropout rate. This organization is now a

FINANCIAL REPORT

separate, nonprofit agency governed by a board of directors. The pilot program began at one high school in Macon. Encouraging stories of mentor/protégée relationships prompted the further expansion of the program to each of the 14 public middle and high schools in our county with over 250 mentors.

June O’Neal, the director, also offers seminars on financial aid, strategies for staying off drugs, and self-esteem building, and help with food and other basic needs for these youth . Community service projects such as feeding the homeless are a big part of the Mentor’s Project, giving these young people a chance to give back to their community. This valuable organization welcomes you to join their cause and directly support children in our community. No matter how little or big the amount, it will make a difference in the life of a child. Nearly 100% of the protégés who graduate from high school with an active mentor will attend a post-secondary institution and become productive members of the community. If you are interested in taking a more personal interest in the life of a young person, you can contact June O’Neal, director, at 478-765-8624 or their website www.mentorsprojectbibb.org.

NEW DATE: WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 710am // Room 97

For our Gracelaced explorers this summer, you are invited to come together to study, share and reflect on our time with God over the sum-mer. Bring your book and anything else that inspired you along the way. It’s not too late to pick up a book and get started in this 8 week self guided reading. Contact Teresa Edwards for more information on getting a book for yourself.

Join us on Sunday, August 11 for our monthly One Step service. Over the next few months, One Step will be collecting toiletry items for Desmond’s new church ministry to homeless people in Montezuma. As you are shopping, consider picking up wash cloths, toothpaste, toothbrushes, mouthwash, deodorant, soap, or any other item which God lays on your heart that we can use to create “care bags.” We look forward to seeing you at our Ridge Campus at 6:00 PM as we continue to work together to bridge the culture gap in Macon and the surrounding areas through Christian worship and fellowship.

Macon Outreach is collecting FRUIT CUPS OR CANNED FRUIT for those in need. If you are able to donate, please place your items in the

Missions Cabinet at the canopy entrance.

This morning, I caught a glimpse of Dr. David Jeremiah on TV saying that to live A Life Beyond Amazing (title of his latest book), one of the characteristics we as Christians develop is sharing unconditional love, which is

active love with no expectation of return. Another preacher was saying that under grace, Christ invites us to “Come to Him”, like a Father who calls his young child to “come to daddy”. That is why I love sending shoeboxes through Operation Christmas Child: We get to practice “unconditional love” to children around the world by filling a shoebox with simple gifts, perhaps with little personal notes or photos, but always with lots of prayers. Then the shoeboxes allow local ministries with few resources to invite children to come to a shoebox distribution to hear about a Heavenly Father who loves them and local people and

ministries who want to share life with them. I personally receive a deep sense of satisfaction and joy that I have the privilege to play a small part in this ministry.

If you want to experience that same joy, take the brochures from around the church that explain how to fill a shoebox, and begin to pray for the child who will receive your box and all our family in Christ worldwide who will get your box from here to there. One FHUMC saint already paid for the empty boxes available around the church that you can take home to fill. Freely take as many boxes as you think you (or you and your family or you and friends or neighbors) can fill and start purchasing useful items that are on sale now. Bring your filled boxes to church during Collection Week, November 18-25, when we will say a final corporate prayer to send our boxes on the next step of their journey. I think you’ll be glad you took this next step of faith in sharing unconditional love.

CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERSBackpack Ministry will be having a meeting for all volunteers on SUNDAY, AUGUST 11 at 4:00 in ROOM 125. We always need new volunteers to pack bags for children, hand out bags of food to children on Friday afternoon, drive the van to deliver carts with bags of food to schools on Thursday and Friday, and stock food in bins on Thursdays. If you are interested in volunteering, please join us for this informative meeting. We are grateful to have the counselor from Twiggs middle and high school share with us what the ministry means to their students and school family. Hope you will attend and hear about the impact the ministry is having on these schools.

A HUGE THANK YOU to our regular volunteers. Team Captains, please notify your team members about the meeting. We are looking forward to starting the new year and working with the Middle Georgia Community Food Bank on obtaining more food for our 1,870 children. Please be in prayer for the children, teachers and schools. If you have any questions about the ministry, please call Brenda Lambert at 478-747-2348.

The pumpkins are coming to the Pumpkin Patch at Forest Hills UMC on Saturday, October 5, 2019. Look for more information in the September newsletter. Let’s make this 24th year the best year yet!
