F or over 30 years Marian McPartland hasbeen introducing listeners to musicianswho’ve captivated imaginations and

enriched our world. A legendary pianist her-self, McPartland crafted a show that won aPeabody award and many accolades over itshistory. At age 92, Ms. McPartland has decid-ed that her talents of thoughtful listening, pointed questioning, and unparalleled experi-ence in jazz would be best served as the artis-tic director of Piano Jazz rather than its host. She will be overseeing the selection and pro-gramming of rebroadcast episodes, providingquotes for the weekly web feature at NPR.org,and guiding the Piano Jazz digital archiveproject and education website.

Before stepping down as host, Ms.McPartland handed the reins over to pianistJon Weber, and with producer ShariHutchison, a new series was born, Piano JazzRising Stars.

Because WBGO strives to deliver fresh andcompelling jazz content to our listeners, PianoJazz Rising Stars with Jon Weber will beginairing on Thursday nights at 6:30pm, in theposition that has been so elegantly held by Ms. McPartland.

This new program picks up right where Ms.McPartland left-off with insightful interviewsof the jazz legends of tomorrow mixed withengaging and unique performances. If you’rea fan of Piano Jazz you may remember Weber, who filled in numerous times for Ms.McPartland. He brings a vast knowledge ofjazz history, excellent musicianship, and theability to coax the very best performancesfrom the amazing artists who visit the showeach week.

Weber’s extraordinary affinity and passionfor music expressed itself when he was just

three-years-old, and bythe age of six, he hadinternalized 2,000 stan-dards from his grand-mother’s piano rolls.According to his online bio his mother recallsa young Weber, “. . . replaying Dr. Suess andBugs Bunny records, changing the chordsevery time. He’d invent a different arrange-ment each time he played a tune, improvising, quoting; shuffling the deck. It was always likea game for him.”

This game became a serious profession forWeber as he studied and mastered his craft. He has released three albums includingSimple Complex with drummer Mark Walker;tenor sax man Eric Alexander; trumpetersDiego Urcola and Roy Hargrove; bassistsAvishai Cohen, Niels-Henning ØrstedPedersen, and Peter Washington; and vibra-phonist Gary Burton.

As host of Piano Jazz Rising Stars you canexpect Weber to introduce you to many wel-come wonderful guests including pianistTaylor Eigsti, guitarist Julian Lage, alto saxo-phonist/vocalist Grace Kelly, vocalist SachalVasandani, and the 2011 Thelonious MonkCompetition winner, pianist Kris Bowers, justto name a few.

We hope you’re excited for Mr. Weber’s fresh perspective, insights and inspired performances with these rising stars of jazz. Of course, you can listen to archives of Piano Jazz whenever you like at npr.org/programs/piano-jazz. WBGO is proudto have broadcast Ms. McPartland’s voice, unique approach, and undeniable grace for somany years. Tune in to this new program andwe’re certain you will hear her incrediblemagnificent influence.

Monday, September 3 is Labor Day and if you tune into WBGO that after-noon you can spend some holiday

time with Rhonda Hamilton as she samplesmusic from the Caramoor Jazz Festival. TheJazzSet team headed to the festival, held July 28, 2012 at the outdoor performing artscenter near Katonah, New York, to capturesome magic.

Opening the 19th Caramoor Jazz Festivalyou can hear the “supergroup,” The Cookers, led by trumpeter David Weiss with hornmenEddie Henderson, Craig Handy and BillyHarper. The group has been together fiveyears and has just returned from a tour of theNorthwest.

The broadcast continues with two winningvoices—Gretchen Parlato, this year’s JazzJournalists Association Female Singer of theYear, and Dee Dee Bridgewater, who receivedthe award in 2011. Both Dee Dee andGretchen spent July touring Europe, so theirtransition to the Venetian Theater stage atCaramoor will be graceful.

Not one but two NEA Jazz Masters are onthe program. Kenny Barron will play a solopiano set, and drummer Roy Haynes leads hisFountain of Youth Band. Barron will probablywing it. As he told George Kanzler in thismonth’s New York City Jazz Record, “I rarelydo set lists. It works out better for me. Everytime I try and do one I’m always sorry I did it.. . . I like to read the audience, see who’s outthere” and choose accordingly. “That’s notpandering, it’s just realizing who you’re play-ing for.” Toward the end of his set, Haynes islikely to get up and dance. We’ll make that aradio highlight.

JazzSet’s Grammy® Award winningTechnical Director Duke Markos recordedand mixed in Surround Sound. We thank theCaramoor Jazz Festival for supporting this holiday special.

coverstory

T he TD James Moody Democracy ofJazz Festival is coming to WBGO’sblock this October, and all of

Newark is abuzz. The festival features twoanchor events at the New JerseyPerforming Arts Center (NJPAC) withsatellite events throughout Newark.Festival performers include GeorgeBenson, David Sanborn, The ManhattanTransfer, Christian McBride andAngelique Kidjo to name a few.

The President and CEO of NJPAC,John Schreiber, describes why this excit-ing new festival bears the late JamesMoody’s name: “As a non-musician, oneof the things I love about Moody—andthe reason why we wanted to name a fes-tival after him—is Moody’s sense of joy,”Schreiber says. “That joy, combined withhis extraordinary talent, is what can take acivilian and turn that person into a jazzfan. We wanted to create a festival in hishonor at the Arts Center that would havea really authentic resonance with NewJersey and, especially, Newark. Newarkalso deserved a festival of equal caliber toits hometown jazz station, WBGO.WBGO positively represents the city to alocal and global audience, NJPAC is

delighted to have them as co-presenter ofthis historic event.”

WBGO President and CEO, CephasBowles continued on why Newark is thehome for the festival: “Moody is one ofthe patron saints of Newark, a leading jazzfigure who went to high school here, and—by virtue of his celebrity—showedNewark to be a great jazz incubator andtown. As a global jazz ambassador, he letpeople know that Newark, which is only12 miles from Manhattan, is a vital part ofthe jazz capital of the world.”

The festival will also be host to the firstever Sarah Vaughan Vocal Competition,on which WBGO hosts Dee DeeBridgewater and Michael Bourne willserve as judges during the live finals.Additionally, a new series will launch dur-ing the festival, Dorthaan’s Place. ThisSunday jazz brunch series is named afterand produced by Dorthaan Kirk, whomany refer to as the First Lady of Jazz, especially around the halls at WBGO,where she has worked since the radio sta-tion’s inception in 1979.
