The Simple Present

Gebruik

We gebruiken de Present Simple voor het uiten van gevoelens. I think so I like it I hate it

Ten tweede gebruiken we de Present Simple voor het beschrijven van situaties die lange tijd hetzelfde blijven, voor feiten en voor dingen die voor een lange tijd waarheid zijn. We live close to school The road is long I dislike potatoes

Ten derde, gebruiken wij de Present Simple ook bij acties die regelmatig voorkomen

We go there every week I visit my friends every day

Page 15: up n…  · Web viewIntroduction. Pronouncing English – text. Verbs to be and to have. Huckelsbrook farm. Famous people. Pronouncing English. Dearest creature in creation, Study

Bevestigende vorm

Bij de ik, wij, en hen- vorm, komt er na het werkwoord geen extra letter. Dus:

I get Ik krijgYou get Jij krijgtWe get We krijgenThey get Zij krijgen

I usually get breakfast ready before mom wakes up. All children in the class like candy. I know the answer to your question. I always do my shopping in the local store.

Maar achter he, she en it komt er altijd een -s of -es. Dus:

He gets Hij krijgtShe gets Zij krijgtIt gets Het krijgt

It gets (get) busy at weekends. He thinks (think) he knows (know) the answer. She makes (make) a lot of noise when she's home alone. He watches (watch) a lot of TV in the weekend.

Page 16: up n…  · Web viewIntroduction. Pronouncing English – text. Verbs to be and to have. Huckelsbrook farm. Famous people. Pronouncing English. Dearest creature in creation, Study

Ontkennende vorm

Bij een ontkennende vorm gebruiken wij altijd een vorm van 'do not'.Voor I, you, we, they geldt dat we do not letterlijk overnemen, met een werkwoord daarachter.

I do not like apples Ik vind appels niet lekker You do not like apples Jij vind appels niet lekkerWe do not like apples We vinden appels niet lekkerThey do not like apples Zij vinden appels niet lekker

'Do not' kan worden afgekort tot 'don't'. I don't like apples You don't like apples We don't like apples They don't like apples

He, she en it krijgen hier een -es als toevoeging. Deze keer niet achter het werkwoord. Deze keer komt de -es achter 'do'. --> Do +es= Does He does She does It does

Vraagzinnen

De vragende vormen hebben dezelfde regels als hierboven beschreven. Alleen staat 'Do' of 'Does' vooraan de zin.

Does he like you? Do you like candy? Do they love each other?

Let er wel op dat de -es achter 'do' wordt toegevoegd bij he, she en it, en niet ook nog eens achter 'like'.

Goed FoutDoes he like candy? Does he likes candy?Does she talk much? Does she talks much?Does it stand there? Does it stands there?

Bij he, she en it mag je maar 1x een -s of -es toevoegen. Deze komt achter do als je die moet gebruiken of achter het werkwoord.

The Number 1,000,000,000

In English this number is a billion. This is very tricky for nations where 'a billion' has 12 zeros. 1,000,000,000,000 in English, however, is a trillion.

But don't worry, these numbers are even a bit problematic for native speakers: for a long time the British 'billion' had 12 zeros (a number with 9 zeros was called 'a thousand million'). Now, however, also in British English 'a billion' has 9 zeros. But from time to time this number still causes confusion (just like this paragraph, I'm afraid). ;o)

Singular or Plural?

Numbers are usually written in singular.

two hundred Eurosseveral thousand light years

The plural is only used with dozen, hundred, thousand, million, billion, if they are not modified by another number or expression (e.g. a few / several).

hundreds of Eurosthousands of light years

Homes: reading

Luke Matthews has an amazing home, but he doesn’t live in ahouse – he lives in a lighthouse. The lighthouse is, of course, near the sea and today you can hear the waves crashing onto therocks below.

“In fact you can hear the sea every day,” says Luke. “It’s notreally a quiet place, it’s often windy and there are many noisybirds calling. There are no cars or people near but there’s always a lot of sound.” Inside the lighthouse it’s much quieter. The walls and windows are very thick to protect the building from storms. Luke says he isn’t afraid of the storms. He knows that he’s safe in the lighthouse which is over a hundred years old.

The building is no longer a working lighthouse although there’s still a light at the top for the ships. “Many lighthouses are empty now, and some don’t have a light,” saysLuke. “It’s quite easy to buy one to live in.” Luke is a writer and for him it’s an ideal home to work and live in.

So why is a lighthouse a good place for Luke?“Well, the first reason is that it’s easier for me to work when there are no people around. I can turn off the telephone and write in peace. Writing is easier for me when I am alone. Secondly, the views from the lighthouse are just wonderful. Themorning sunrises and evening sunsets are incredible, and the countryside all aroundis beautiful. I can see 360 degrees all the time and I love that. The views help me with my writing. When there’s a big storm it’s wonderful. Finally, I love sea life. From the lighthouse you can see dolphins and whales and many different kinds of sea birds. My favourite are the seals which play in the water. I fish a lot too, and ofteneat lobster and crab – they’re delicious!”

All the rooms in the lighthouse are on top of each other. On the ground floor there’s the kitchen which also has a table and chairs for dining, above that there’s the living room. Above the living room is a bedroom and small bathroom, and right at the top is the room where Luke does his writing. A spiral staircase is right in the middle, and allthe rooms are round, of course!

So, does Luke have any problems with his unusual home?“Not really. It’s difficult to grow vegetables in the garden because it’s too windy, and there are too many rabbits! The nearest village isn’t too far away, it takes meabout half an hour to walk there. There are a couple of shops and also a pub if I wantto meet some other people but I prefer being by myself. For me it’s

New Driving Laws for Teens

(1/25/2006)

There are new laws for teenage drivers. Some parents do not know about these new laws. It is very important that everyone learns about and understands these new laws.

A teenage girl died in a car crash. She was a passenger in a car. The driver of the car was 16 years old. There were two other passengers in the car who were also hurt.

The accident reminded some people of how important the new laws are for teenage drivers. The laws were written to hopefully save lives. Maybe the teenage girl would still be alive if the law was followed.

The new law states that teen drivers cannot have passengers in their car who are under the age of 20 unless there is another licensed driver over the age of 25 in the car too. The law also states that teenagers cannot drive between the hours of 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. These laws need to be followed for the first year that a teen driver has his license.

Some students said that they know about the laws but do not obey them. They want to drive with their friends. Some teenagers are breaking the law by driving with friends in their cars.

There are some exceptions to the new driving laws. Teens can drive their brothers and sisters to school. They can also drive during off-limits hours because of work or medical reasons. They need to keep a note in their car stating why they need to drive.

Many more teenagers die in car crashes than adults. New laws were made to help keep young drivers safer. If the laws are going to work they will need to be followed. http://www.cdlponline.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=activity1&topicID=3&storyID=221

Abandoned ship Where are the crew and passengers?14 December 1872

Yesterday morning people saw a small sailing ship enter the Bay of Gibraltar. This was not an unusual site, but the sailors on board were from another ship. The captain of this ship, his wife and child, and the original crew were all missing.

The 31-metre Mary Celeste left New York on 7 November and was sailing across theAtlantic to Italy. On board were Captain Benjamin Briggs, his wife Sarah and their two-year-old daughter, Sophie. There were also seven crew members, making a total often people. The cargo included 1,701 barrelsof industrial alcohol.

A week later another ship, the Dei Gratia, left New York for Italy. Captain Morehouse spotted the Mary Celeste off the coast of Portugal. He saw that the ship was out of control. He was surprised, he was a friend of Captain Briggs and knew he was a good seaman. He watched the ship for two hours and tried to make contact but there was no reply. The captain decided to send some of his sailors in a small boat to the MaryCeleste to have a look.

They found that the ship was in good condition but there was nobody on the ship. Special equipment and all the ship’s papers were missing, except the captain’s logbook. One of the sailors said, “There was a lot of water inside the ship and the captain’s bed was all wet. Also the galley was in a bad state - the cooking pots were everywhereand the cooking stove was knocked over. It looked like they left in a hurry – they didn’t take their boots. Perhaps they thought the ship was going to sink.”

So how did they leave? The sailor added, “There were no dinghies on board. Alsothere were ropes hanging over the side, and one was broken. Perhaps they got into a dinghy and the rope broke in bad weather.” Captain Morehouse said that the weatherwas very bad with strong winds and rain before they found the boat. He put half ofhis sailors on the empty boat and brought it to Gibraltar.

However, why the crew and passengers left the ship and what happened to themnext is a mystery.

Abandoned ship

‘Ghost boat’ found with no crew.

20 April 2007

Yesterday afternoon coastguards in Australia began searching for three men. The air and sea rescue operation included12 planes and four boats. The search began after a boat was found with no crew. The 12-metre Kaz 11 left Arlie Beach on15 April and was sailing around the coast of Australia. On board were the skipper Derek Batten, 56, and brothers Jim and Peter Tunstead aged 69 and 63. All three are experienced seamen. The men bought the boat last week, they wanted to sail for six to eight weeks around the north to western Australia. However, only three days later, a plane spotted the boat off the coast of Queensland. The pilot couldn’t see any people so he tried to make contact but there was no reply. Yesterday morning a rescue helicopter senta crewman down to the Kaz 11 to have a look.He found that the boat was in good condition. One of the sails was torn but everything else was normal. The table was set and there was food ready to eat. There were two laptop computers on, mobile phones and sunglasses were on the table - but

there was nobody on the boat. There were also life jackets and emergencyequipment on the boat. The dinghy was also there. The only thing missing was the crew. The pilot of the rescue helicopter said,“It’s almost like they just walked off the boat.”He also said that the lights were on and

the engine was on too.So what happened? A spokesperson

said, “It was very windy when the men left on Sunday but this was normal and not a problem. It was good sailing weather. Everything on the boat was in a good state, nothing was knocked over. However, therewere three fenders on the side of the boat. These are put out when another boat comes near. To me it looks like they left in a hurry. Perhaps they went on another boat.” However, why the crew left their boat and what happened to them next is a mystery. The search continues.
