INTRODUCTION: -The government of India in 1976 had inserted the term “socialist “in the preamble of country’s constitution thereby committing itself to ensuring the development process. But post liberalization (1991) can be seen in the context of the larger role being conscious carved for the private sector in any economy which was earlier largely controlled and managed by the state now, increasing acceptance of CSR by large no of corporate.

The idea of CSR first cane up in 1853. The world business council for sustainable development defined CSR as “the continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and to contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as the local community and society at large.”

“CSR IS ABOUT HOW COMPANIES MANAGE THE BUSINESS PROCESS TO PRODUCE AN OVERALL POSITIVE IMPACT ON SOCIETY”

“Corporate social responsibility is a management concept whereby companies integrate social and environmental concerns in their business operations and interaction with their stakeholder”.

CSR is generally understood as being the way through which the companies achieves a balance of economic, environmental and social imperatives.

WHY CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IS IMPORTANT?Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a broad term used to describe a company’s efforts to improve society in some way. this effort can range from donating money to non-profits to implementing environmentally friendly policies in the work place.

Hence we can conclude that corporate social responsibility are the raising concept within the public sector units.

The companies in their CSR activities should give more preference for education, environmental issues, poverty elevation programme, employment generation, roads and power etc. in order to move from theory to concrete action, many obstacles need to be overcome. a key challenge facing business is the need for more reliable indicators of progress in the field of CSR, along with dissemination of CSR strategies. lack of transparency is another issue which needs to be focused. this is mainly due to the fact that there is little need of knowledge about the CSR within the local communities since no sincere efforts has been made to create awareness about the CSR and win the confidence of the local communities.

Lastly but not least there is a need to increase the understanding and active participation of business in equitable social development as an integral part of good business practice.

SUGGESTION: -

Each and every company should undertake the element of corporate social responsibility into consideration.it is for the benefit of the company’s long life and consistent growth.

As we have seen in both the company NTPC LTD & Bharat petroleum ltd. Have conducted a no of social responsibility activity it has gained a good reputation in the globally competitive market.

In these days more social responsibility you undertake, more you will get consumer’s loyalty.

As the business is being operated within the society, it become compulsory to conduct CSR activities to win consumers’ confidence and represent a global brand image.

At last to say “we should give back to the world, what we take from it.”
