Dear Saints, There is one phrase to describe our current events that has become so popular that we have come to expect it. This is ironic, since the phrase is actually trying to tell you how these events are unexpected. The phrase? Unprecedented mes. First, there was the coronavirus, in which things that had not happened in our own generaon were observed and described in countless news briefings and commercials and event cancellaons as unprecedented mes. But then this riong began, and once again, within 75 days of the unprecedented mes of the pandemic shutdown, we hear that these are now unprecedented mes. How many mes can something be unprecedented before there is a precedent for it? Im reminded of the Athenian descripon in Acts 17, when we hear of the peoplesinterest in Pauls new teaching because all the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there would spend their me in nothing except telling or hearing something new(Acts 17:21). We are also a people who are inundated with all that which is new. And Satan is an opportunist. He uses mes of change to bring fear and anger and to tempt us into sin. Fear is not a sin, but placing our fear in anything besides God alone is a breaking of the 1 st commandment. Anger is not a sin, but it oſten leads us into sins of hatred, bierness, violence, or destroying anothers reputaon, breaking the 5 th and 8 th commandments. Satan uses the opportunity of change and chaos and turmoil to torment you with the disorder of this fallen, sinful world. And he would tempt you to believe that this is all there is and that it is now up to you to do something about it, since these are things that have never happened before. They are unprecedented. Forget about God, the devil would say. Hes busy enough with his own maers. Since this is unprecedented,God must be knocked back on his heels as much as anyone, right? No, dear saints, it is not as though God is scrambling, all in a frenzy, francally trying to figure out how to react to the day-to-day changes in our world. No, whatever kind of suffering we see, God has seen it. Whatever kind of change we encounter, God knows it. Wise Solomon would remind us, What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun(Eccl. 1:9). Dear Saints

There is one phrase to describe our current events that has become so popular that we have come to expect it This is ironic since the phrase is actually trying to tell you how these events are unexpected The phrase Unprecedented times First there was the coronavirus in which things that had not happened in our own generation were observed and described in countless news briefings and commercials and event cancellations as unprecedented times But then this rioting began and once again within 75 days of the unprecedented times of the pandemic shutdown we hear that these are now unprecedented times How many times can something be unprecedented before there is a precedent for it

Irsquom reminded of the Athenian description in Acts 17 when we hear of the peoplesrsquo interest in Paulrsquos new teaching because ldquoall the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there would spend their time in nothing except telling or hearing something newrdquo (Acts 1721) We are also a people who are inundated with all that which is new

And Satan is an opportunist He uses times of change to bring fear and anger and to tempt us into sin Fear is not a sin but placing our fear in anything besides God

alone is a breaking of the 1st commandment Anger is not a sin but it often leads us into sins of hatred bitterness violence or destroying anotherrsquos reputation breaking the 5th and 8th commandments

Satan uses the opportunity of change and chaos and turmoil to torment you with the disorder of this fallen sinful world And he would tempt you to believe that this is all there is and that it is now up to you to do something

about it since these are things that have never happened before They are unprecedented Forget about God the devil would say Hersquos busy enough with his own matters Since this is ldquounprecedentedrdquo God must be knocked back on his heels as much as anyone right

No dear saints it is not as though God is scrambling all in a frenzy frantically trying to figure out how to react to the day-to-day changes in our world No whatever kind of suffering we see God has seen it Whatever kind of change we encounter God knows it Wise Solomon would remind us ldquoWhat has been is what will be and what has been done is what will be done and there is nothing new under the sunrdquo (Eccl 19)

Amidst the tumultuous unpredictable and ever-changing world that we have come to expect Bethel

Lutheran Church stands as a herald of a different message What does she proclaim Rather than echoing the drone of new and unprecedented times a truth is told that far surpasses our experiences in this world Instead of telling what we observe to be real we tell of the one and only real God who never changes We articulate the immutable character of God how He is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love We gather around the enduring and precious Word of God which communicates the depth and breadth of Godrsquos love that He would take on our flesh that he would offer Himself as the sacrifice the payment the redemption for all of our sins We proclaim Christ crucified and risen for you

This message tells of the one truly unprecedented time when God gave His Son for the salvation of the world Yet that good news is now the precedent for all that the church does The Gospel does more than just grab our attention or give inspiration for this moment in life The unchanging truth of Godrsquos love for you in Jesus actually gives life It creates faith in you to receive the forgiveness of your sins It gives the promise of the resurrection It promises that the chaos and turmoil of this life are temporary And while the turmoil rages on the Gospel drives away your fears and rightly places all of your fear your love and your trust in God alone And then God takes away that fear in Jesus He is a rock-solid refuge His Word endures forever The churchrsquos one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord And Jesus Christ is the same yesterday today and forever

COMMUNION SERVICES Time-slots are available on Tuesdays amp Saturdays from 10 amndash3 pm for families or

individuals to schedule Communion To schedule a time for your family please go to our website wwwbethelbismarckcom and click on the SignUpcom button From there choose ldquoCommunion Servicesrdquo to see available time slots Or simply call the church office and wersquoll help you sign up

return to normalcy is not interrupted

Therefore Bethelrsquos Elders have laid out a plan for resuming Communion here in June with Bible Study resuming in July Communion will be on 1st 3rd and 5th Sundays It will be distributed in a continual flow walk-through manner with the pastor and assistants using super-cleanliness sanitizing hands and wearing masks More explanation will be given at each service The private Communion services will continue to be offered on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10am-3pm

It is important that we remain united as a congregation bearing with one another and forgiving one another Each of us are likely at different levels of readiness for returning to normal Especially regarding Communion St Paul scolded the church in Corinth for not remaining as one body saying ldquoI hear that there are divisions among youhellipfor in eating each one goes aheadhelliprdquo He goes on to say ldquoSo then my brothers when you come together to eat wait for one anotherrdquo (1 Cor 1118 21 33)

Let us rejoice that we have been able to continue to hear Godrsquos Word and receive the Sacrament throughout the entire pandemic If it has been a while since you have received the Sacrament I invite you to sign up for one of the Family Communion slots I continue to remember all of you in my prayers that the Lord would guard and keep you in steadfast faith enduring to the end rooted and built up in the Word of God

Here at Bethel we have been blessed to be able to resume our in-person worship services on May 10th while continuing to offer online streaming of our services As of this writing we are coming into our fifth Sunday of the restart What a blessing Thanks be to God On that first Sunday when Bethelrsquos sanctuary actually had people in the pews

again I was brought to tears of joy Several members have commented that they reacted the same way both from being gathered with fellow friends and believers and also simply from being in the sanctuary again Others have had this joy as they came for the brief Communion services during the week

While the restart has begun things are still not normal yet Most notably not all of you are back But in addition we have been seated in every-other pew with sanitizing of all common surfaces between and after services We have had the front door propped open The bulletins are thicker than normal because for this time they are being used in place of the hymnals The pews are taped off for every-other-row seating We still are not shaking hands or passing the offering plates There are still many things that are not yet back to normal

But ndash thanks be to God ndash we are going to take the next step towards normalcy by resuming the celebration of Holy Communion during our services beginning this Sunday As we do we continue to use caution that our

Throughout its 53 years Bethel Lutheran Church has been gifted with innumerable blessings from the Lord These blessings find their pinnacle in the certainty and consolation of the Gospel ndash that Godrsquos love is for you through your Savior Jesus Christ whose death and resurrection have forgiven all of your sins and granted you salvation and life everlasting

As the Gospel has been proclaimed God the Holy Spirit has called and gathered many to be members of our congregation The Word of God has blessed us to be a blessing (Gen 122) It has recreated us in Jesus Christ for good works (Eph 210) And when good works are done all glory to God

Especially since the middle of March when everything shut down I have been continually reminded of how blessed we are as a congregation Irsquom

thankful for our Sunday School teachers who called and sent mail to encourage students Irsquom thankful for Pat Sebastian who kept reaching out to our youth and young adults during this time Irsquom thankful for our Elders who spent extra time in decision making and in calling our members Irsquom thankful for Jenny Tschaekofske for all her work in extra communication mailing sermons putting together newsletters when everything was up in the air and for continuing to make all that we do at Bethel be done with excellence Irsquom thankful for our Altar Guild who spent extra time filling candles and making themselves ready for whatever changes might come Irsquom thankful for the ladies of the LWML for coordinating food for Harold Pfennigrsquos funeral Irsquom thankful for Vicar Dailey and his faithful care for members work on sermons and newsletter articles and his diligence to learn all he can about pastoral ministry Irsquom thankful for our Organists who endured playing in an empty sanctuary and joyfully continued to bring beautiful music to our services Irsquom thankful for all of those who have cleaned and sanitized after our services Irsquom thankful for Becky Emter and all who helped in coordinating virtual hymn-sings Irsquom thankful for all of our Bethel members for their generosity who have faithfully supported Bethel over the years allowing us to come into this time debt-free and many of whom offered their help and finances to those who might be in need All glory to God

But among all of these I want to offer a special word of appreciation for Scott Tschaekofske He is the one who has been behind the camera making all of our online services work And as many of you have noted our services have not just ldquoworkedrdquo They have been done with excellence Scott having no training beforehand on any audio or video work stepped in immediately to an incredible learning curve He has waged more battles behind the scenes than any of us can possibly know making split-second corrections to camera freeze-ups and microphone interferences He has spent countless hours testing and troubleshooting as well as planning his scripts for each service for slides and scenes I know that Scott does not want the recognition for he is a humble willing servant But I am so thankful for him So please join me in giving all praise and thanks to God for Scott To God be the glory

Article XI Godrsquos Eternal Foreknowledge and Election Divine election is the teaching that ldquofrom Godrsquos gracious will and pleasure in Christ Jesus election is a cause that gains works helps and promotes our salvationrdquo (FS SD XI 8) Divine election is Godrsquos working of our salvation in which ldquoHe chose us in Him before the foundation of the worldrdquo (Ephesians 14) Election is not just knowing beforehand who would believe Christ and be saved but it is Godrsquos work bringing us to salvation

There were no real debates among Lutherans on the teaching of divine election However Calvinist theology was beginning to hold sway over some Lutherans so this article was included For Calvinism taught a horrendous teaching known as ldquodouble predestinationrdquo This Calvinist teaching held that God chose some people for salvation but He chose the rest of humanity for the fires of hell In this teaching Christ only died for the sake of the elect Yet this teaching blatantly goes against scripture when Jesus said ldquoFor God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal liferdquo (John 316)

In the correct understanding of predestination or election the Formula of Concord directs us to look nowhere else but Godrsquos revealed Word And in Godrsquos Word we hear that Jesus died for the sins of the world and that ldquorepentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in His name to all nationsrdquo (Luke 2447) God ldquodesires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truthrdquo (1 Timothy 24) ldquo[Christ] is eager that all people should come to Him and allow themselves to be helpedhellipFurthermore He promises the power and the working of the Holy Spiritrdquo (FC Ep XI 7)

But if faith is something the Holy Spirit works in us and God desires all people to be saved then why are not all people saved Well ldquothe reason some are not saved is as follows They do not listen to Godrsquos Word at all but willfully despise it plug their ears and harden their heartsrdquo (FC Ep XI 11) Scripture tells us that people can harden their hearts to Godrsquos Word (Hebrews 47) resist the Holy Spirit (Acts 751) persevere in sins without repentance (Luke 1418-20) and seek other ways to righteousness and salvation outside of Christ (Romans 931) No one has the power to come to faith yet people can resist the working of the Holy Spirit and remain in their sins

However the teaching of election is of great comfort In this teaching we see that God has indeed elected us

ldquowithout any merit or worthinessrdquo of our own but out of pure grace And since we have been saved apart from our works and God has planned our salvation from eternity our

The Formula of Concord Articles IX amp X Vicar Richard Dailey

salvation is secure in Christrsquos saving work on the cross ldquoHe has not only promised this gracious election with mere words but has also certified it with an oath and sealed it with the holy Sacraments We can call these to mind in our most severe temptations and take comfort in them and with them we can quench the fiery darts of the devilrdquo (FC Ep XI 13)

Article XII Other Factions and Sects Article XII addresses various false teachings in Christianity at the time I cannot cover everything this article addresses so I will just highlight a few The Formula condemned the assertion that our salvation depends on both Christrsquos saving work and our godliness As we talked about in article IV our good works are a result of our saving faith not a contributing factor in our salvation Also condemned was the view that children were born innocent Article I addressed this very issue Because of original sin ldquoall have sinned and fall short of the glory of Godrdquo (Romans 323) Other articles that were condemned were the claims that Christians could not hold property hold public office or make weapons Several other false teachings were condemned in the areas of the church government and home life

Conclusion It has been a blessing walking through the Formula of Concord with you I would encourage all of you to read the Epitome of the Formula of Concord which is a condensed version of it It can be found at bookofconcordorg It has been a blessing to be with you this year and I pray that the Lord continues to bring you His peace which passes all understanding and that He guards your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus our Lord

Reaching Caring and Sharing Christ

June-July 2020

June-July 2020 ldquoMain Street Livingrdquo Media Ministry

COMMUNION SERVICES Time-slots are available on Tuesdays amp Saturdays from 10 amndash3 pm for families or

return to normalcy is not interrupted

Page 4: Unprecedented Times? June-July 2020 Newsletter.… · bring fear and anger and to tempt us into sin. Fear is not a sin, but placing our fear in anything besides God alone is a breaking

June-July 2020 ldquoMain Street Livingrdquo Media Ministry

June-July 2020 ldquoMain Street Livingrdquo Media Ministry

HAVE YOU been watching the ldquoThis Is The Liferdquo programs along with the MSL Divine Services each Sunday As our LCMS President Matthew Harrison states during his introduction of these programs though they were recorded in the 1960rsquos and 70rsquos the subject matter is still very relevant I personally look forward to watching each weekrsquos episode ndash and often find my emotions welling up as the story line develops These critically acclaimed dramas still do a wonderful job of ldquobringing Christ to the nationsrdquo

Although many congregations have either started meeting face to face again ndash or are discussing doing so soon ndash there are likely those within our viewing area who will still be

staying close to home Therefore this remains an excellent time to make a list of friends and neighbors to check with whom may not yet know about the TV and internet ministry of MAIN STREET LIVING In addition to being broadcast each Sunday morning you can view all archived programs at any time for a year at wwwmainstreetlivingcom ndash then click on the link under the picture identified as ldquoNorth (Fargo)rdquo
