  • CHALLENGE

Take a drive through the countryside and you’ll still see plenty of cows grazing and fields of wheat growing tall. Delve a little deeper, however, and you’ll discover an agricultural revolution underway.

The world’s growing population — currently 7 billion — is putting more pressure than ever on the earth’s finite resources. We need to feed, clothe and shelter those billions of people while petroleum supplies shrink and climate change increases the risk of droughts, floods and other extreme weather.

The agricultural sector is stepping up to the challenge.

    UNLIMITED OPPORTUNITY

Today, environmentally responsible advances are increasing crop yields, saving precious water and helping producers farm more efficiently. Nor does it end there. As well as food, farmers are growing the ingredients for everything from bio-based jet fuels to car parts and cancer treatments.

At Bioenterprise, we see a sector with outstanding growth potential. We see blue-sky investment opportunities. We see bold ideas generating new products and entire new industries.

But we’re not just spectators. As one of North America’s leading agri-business accelerators, we’re right in the thick of it, driving a wave of innovation that is transforming agriculture, manufacturing, medicine and a whole lot more.

  • AbCelex TechnologiesSafer chicken, coming right upEach year, millions of North Americans fall ill after eating chicken, thanks to Campylobacter. The corkscrew-shaped bacteria infects more than half the raw poultry sold in the U.S., making it one of the biggest causes of foodborne illness in the Western world.

To tackle the problem, AbCelex’s Dr. Saied Babaei turned to the camel families. These desert creatures have a unique type of antibody that is small, stable and cheap to produce. Babaei and his partner, Dr. Ali Riazi, set to work creating fragments of these antibodies — so-called “nanobodies” — targeted at Campylobacter.

They knew any cost-effective livestock treatment must be delivered in feed. In the course of the last three years, the pair successfully engineered nanobodies that can withstand the high temperatures used to process animal feed and the low pH and enzymes in the chicken’s digestive system.

That’s when they turned to Bioenterprise. We connected them to industry players, conducted market analyses, and put together product costings. “Bioenterprise came to the rescue,” says Babaei. “It was perfect timing.”

As a result, AbCelex struck a $2 million venture capital deal and attracted high-profile partners. If field trials prove successful, safer chicken could be just around the corner.

  • Anatis BioprotectionAttacking aphids the natural wayAphids infesting your tomatoes? Whiteflies wreaking havoc on your cucumber crop? Anatis Bioprotection has the solution.

For 20 years, Dr. Silvia Todorova worked to identify the perfect strain of parasite to control greenhouse pests — one that was aggressive enough to obliterate whiteflies, thrips and other assorted nasties but wouldn’t wipe out beneficial insects like ladybugs or bees.

The result was BioCeres: an all-natural insecticide based on a fungus called Beauveria bassiana.

Then came the challenge of lining up suppliers, manufacturers and distributors and clearing all the regulatory hurdles. Throughout that journey, Anatis leveraged the expertise of Bioenterprise. We helped Anatis put together a business plan, build financial models and connect them with industry partners.

“It was a good fit,” says Jean-Bernard Gélinas, the company’s director of marketing and business. “They helped the company to get on track.”

Now, Anatis is focused on full-scale commercialization for 2015. While they’re currently targeting farmers, the team has its eye on other markets that could benefit from their bio-insecticide: lawn care professionals, pest control companies, bed bug exterminators and more. “Almost every week, someone asks us if we have tested the product against that insect or that other insect,” says Gélinas.

  • Agri-NeoAll-Natural AmbitionYou can kill dangerous bacteria in dairy products using pasteurization. You can sanitize fruits and veggies with a chlorine rinse. But what about low-moisture foods like seeds, sprouted grains, nuts and spices? Agri-Neo has developed Neo-Pure, an all-natural, government-approved solution to destroy harmful microbes on low-moisture foods. Neo-Pure can reduce pathogens like Salmonella by more than 99.999%. The non-toxic solution is applied as an aqueous mist onto food, where it eliminates microbes on the surface and penetrates into cracks, crevices and biofilm. Agri-Neo co-founder and COO Rob Wong wants to see Neo-Pure become a new global standard for ensuring the safety and quality of low-moisture food. For assistance, he turned Bioenterprise. “They’re definitely a leader in the Canadian space in terms of working with agricultural companies,” Wong says. “They’re laser-focused in this area.”

We provided Agri-Neo with strategic connections and expertise to find the talent they needed. Those connections also led Agri-Neo to customers, funders and regulatory professionals. On top of that, Bioenterprise provided a valuable sounding board, says Wong, helping the team think through strategic business decisions. Since its inception in 2009, Agri-Neo has more than tripled in size and moved to a much larger space in Toronto. They’ve attracted a number of Canadian clients and plan to expand into the U.S.
