During the semester: 50 per cent

During the exam period: 50 per cent

Attendance: 2 classes can be missed. Any additional missed class lowers the final grade.

Regular preparation for the class, and classroom presentation: 25 %

Mid-term test: 25 %

Final exam: 25 (oral exam) + 25 % (presentation of the home assignment)

Exam:

a) home assignment – a short paper (3-5 pages) summarizing an individual or a group

research project. This project will be presented during the exam.

b) Oral exam (drawing one question and talking about the subject issue).

Cieľ predmetu/Goal

To obtain elementary knowledge from theory of literature, literary history and criticism, as

well as an overview of some 20th century research methods in the area of literary studies

Stručná osnova predmetu:

Literature and Literary Studies. Nature of literature. Literature as a separate area of studies.

Functions of literature. Overlaps with other disciplines. General, comparative and national

literatures. Division of literary studies. Theory of literature. Literary history. Literary criticism.

Theory of Literature 1. Tropes (Figures of speech) and Figures (Rhetorical, Syntactic, Figures

of Sound).

Theory of literature. Drama, its nature and composition. Action, acts, scene, dialogue.

Characters. Genres. Drama and Theatre.

Mid- term test.

Literary history. Major periods, movements, and development of European literatures.

Some ‘fashion’/current topics in studies of literary history. Colonialism, post-colonialism,

imperial and post-imperial periods. Gender studies, feminism and literature.

Literary criticism 1. (Literary studies). Some methods and schools – brief overview. New

Criticism. Russian formal school. Structuralism and post-structuralism. Psychoanalysis and

literature.

Literary criticism 2. (Literary studies). Some methods and schools – brief overview

(continued). Hermeneutics and literature. Semiotics. Interpretation of literary texts.

Deconstruction and postmodernism.

Literary criticism 3. Axiology, values, opinions, literary life.
