III. Detailed Progress:

A. Advising and Registration:

All the 45 USP VI scholars are registered for Spring 2016 and Summer2016 with full time

loads. The scholars have been in regular contact with their academic coordinators and

have been receiving proper advice and direction.

B. Monitoring of Scholars:

A plan has been devised for the monitoring of scholars in order to ensure that they will

maintain good academic standing and graduate on time. This plan is made up of

multiple stakeholders who are working with the scholars in order to ensure their well

being:

a. OCE:

The Outreach and Civic Engagement at the Lebanese American University, headed by

the Assistant Vice President who oversees the execution of the program and ensures

successful implementation, supervises orientation, enrichment activities, and media

coverage, and works closely with academic coordinators on USP curricular progress.

b. Student mentors:

Each scholar has been assigned a student mentor whose main job is to make sure that

the scholar is doing well scholastically and that he/she is not facing any problem. The

student mentor is a junior or senior student of the same major who has demonstrated

Page 5: University Scholarship Program (USP VI) Cooperative

leadership skills. He/she helps the scholar in issues related to his/her every day life:

dorms and adjustment on campus. Refer to Appendix 1.

c. Academic coordinators

Since USP VI scholars do not have a designated academic advisors, these students have

been followed up closely by the USP academic coordinators. For reporting and tracking

students’ performance, direct contact with each of these students’ classroom

professors has been established.

d. Student support/tutoring:

Whenever deemed necessary, USP scholars receive support and tutoring from LAU

student support centers such as the Cooperative Learning Center, the Writing Center,

and the Academic Computer Center in addition to the counselors and professional

career and academic advising coordinators in the Deans of Students’ Offices in both

Byblos and Beirut.

e. Academic Progress:

During the April 2016 - June 2016 period, instructors sent three progress reports for

Spring 2016 semester. The reports were studied and, when needed, proper advisory

action was taken. The reports demonstrated that the USP VI scholars are performing

well and progressing normally. It is important to note that the 45 students enrolled in

regular classes, and as of the end of Spring 2016 semester:

8 scholars have a major GPA 4.0

28 scholars have a major GPA between 3.0 and 3.99

6 scholars have a major GPA between 2.0 and 2.99

3 scholars have no major GPA below

35 scholars (77.8%) have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above

10 scholars have a cumulative GPA between 2.0 and 2.99

Moreover, it is important to note that no one has a cumulative GPA or major GPA below 2.0. In August 2016, summer semester came to an end and by then the instructors had sent

three progress reports for Summer 2016. The reports were studied and, when needed,

proper advisory action was taken. The reports demonstrated that the USP VI scholars

are performing well and progressing normally.

Out of 45 scholars, 18 students enrolled in regular classes, and as of the end of Summer

2016 semester:

Page 6: University Scholarship Program (USP VI) Cooperative

VII. Quotes from Scholars

It seems that after joining the USP, I learned how to see the world for the first time. Being engaged in all the leadership activities broadened my perspective and showed me that a lot is possible when you set your mind towards a common goal especially while working with likeminded passionate individuals. Since joining the USP, I learned how to express my passion and how to implement the skills and knowledge that I have acquired towards helping my community. I can’t imagine how the world would have been without USP and without the support and encouragement of such programs in making our idealistic futures a reality.

After we graduated from school, my classmates and I each went in our separate way. I was seeking the golden road. After being adopted by the most loving family on Earth, the USP, completely change my life and changed me on a personal level. Ever since I got accepted by the scholarship, my self-confidence and determination rose like never before. The USP gave me the golden opportunity from a pool of thousands of students all across Lebanon, took me by the hand, and whispered kindly: “There you go, shine bright”. Given the opportunity to enter one of the most prestigious universities in Lebanon, I was able to major in the field that I always dreamed off. Today, thanks to USP, I am majoring in Computer Science, being taught by the most reputable professors in the field, and becoming an active member in my community; all of which I wouldn’t have achieved without the help of USP. 201500*** - Computer Science

As a young teenager, I used to dream of being able to make a change, a difference in my country. I’m not talking about superheroes with their black caps and hidden faces like they made us believe in the comics, but I’m talking about powerful “women” who believe in themselves and in their country and have so many potential but are waiting for an opportunity to excel. When people used to talk about USP scholarships a couple of years ago, I thought that this is the golden key to change my path. And it really was. Here I am today pursuing a Business degree at LAU under the guarding wings of the USAID. USP encouraged me to still believe in myself. In addition to academic excellence, USP gave me the opportunity to be highly engaged in leadership activities in my community. USP taught me that education is the most powerful weapon that could change the world and thus it should not stop when a semester ends. USP taught me to dream bigger and to make the impossible possible as long as you are working hard enough. And one day, you will be that change you always wanted to be. 201505*** – Business Marketing
