University of
Warsaw
History
University of Warsaw was founded in 1816. The newly-formed University consisted of the following faculties: Law, Medicine, Philosophy, Theology, Sciences and Fine Arts.
From the beginning, the history of University of Warsaw has been closely linked to the history of Warsaw itself and in great measure – the history of Poland, even in times of partitions, wars and national uprisings. Also in the most difficult times for Poland, the University was a major center of nation’s intellectual life and independent thought.
The political and economic transformation that began in Poland in 1989 resulted in rapid development of higher education, opening up new opportunities but also challenges for University of Warsaw.
Thanks to the high standards of research and teaching, University of Warsaw has earned its international distinction as Poland’s leading
