HUNGARY - BUDAPEST

Located at around 200 m above sea level Hungary is a

state of 93 thousand km² situated in Central Europe. The

region is referred to as the Carpathian Basin. North to South

it is 268 km and East to West it is 528 km. The terrain consists of flat land plains to the

East and smaller mountains to the West. Kékestető is the highest point with 1014 m in

height. The main rivers are the Danube and the Tisza,

both are considered large and are conducive to ship

and boat travel. The largest lake of Central Europe is

also found here called Balaton, it is 78 km long and 14

km at its widest point, covering an area of 592 km² and

is referred to by Hungarians as the "sea of Hungary". It is

a summer paradise for sailing, fishing and swimming

with its silky sky blue waters.

Budapest, the capital of Hungary is situated along

the Danube. The river divides the city into two

parts. The hilly Buda is located along the right bank

of the Danube, while the flat left side is called Pest.

Budapest is populated with approximately 1.7

million people, roughly one fifth of the country's

population.

UNIVERSITY OF VETERINARY MEDICINE BUDAPEST

The university has an uninterrupted teaching

record for more than two centuries (since 1787),

making it thus one of the oldest veterinary

schools in the world. It is the only veterinary

school in Hungary. It is a state institution

supervised and financed by the Ministry of

Human Capacities and is accredited to issue the

diplomas of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine

(D.V.M), Master of Science (MSc) in applied

zoology and the postgraduate degree of Doctor

of Philosophy (PhD) in veterinary sciences.

Page 4: UNIVERSITY OF VETERINARY MEDICINE BUDAPEST HUNGARY · UNIVERSITY OF VETERINARY MEDICINE BUDAPEST The university has an uninterrupted teaching record for more than two centuries (since

4

Postgraduate education is also organized by the university

for the veterinarians on several fields of the veterinary

praxis meeting the demands of the colleagues wishing to

specialise themselves in a certain animal species (horse,

cattle, poultry, pet animals etc.) or in a specific field of

veterinary praxis (microbiologist, toxicologist, veterinary

legislation expert etc.).

Besides the graduate and postgraduate education,

internationally highly estimated research work on

practically each field of veterinary work is run by the

academic stuff of the university, mostly in cooperation

with the support of different national and international

grants.

Keeping the demands of international integration and joining the European

education and research community in mind, since 1989 in addition to a yearly

enrolment of about 100 Hungarian students international students have been

continuously enrolled in the school. A full veterinary program has been instituted and

is offered in English with the pre-clinical section also in German. Currently about 1000

international students are studying veterinary medicine in Budapest from all over the

world.

In 2001 a new Large Animal Clinic was

opened in an ideal rural environment of the

University Field Station area 30 km from the

city. The historical campus remained the

centre with the Office of the Rector, the Basic

Science Departments and the new Small

Animal Clinic opened in 2006, while the new

Large Animal Clinic is gradually developed

into a centre for farm animal and equine

practices. Both sites are equally equipped with up-to-date diagnostic and

therapeutic facilities and will provide increased opportunities for teaching, practical

training and research.

Our university is also an EAEVE Accredited

Institution as in February 2014 the European

Association of Establishments for Veterinary

Education evaluated our school in two

stages examining our curriculum and our

quality management system as well. The

high level of veterinary training attracts

excellent, motivated students and the

European accreditation certifies that the

level of the Hungarian veterinary training

equals to that of the best schools in Europe.

Results of the EAEVE evaluation are followed by professional organisations overseas,

and the EAEVE accreditation helps to accept the diplomas outside Europe, too.

Electives

For the exact list of available elective courses and their details (number of hours,

credits, timing etc.) please visit the Neptun-system – it is edited and updated by the

relevant departments. In this booklet you’ll find a general overview only. Please note

also the deadlines for (de)registering in the Neptun-system to attend these classes

and their exam.

In case of elective courses with limited places for participation regular full-time

students come first compared to part-time students, inactive and visiting (e.g.

ERASMUS-) students. For elective courses with limited number of participants a

deposit of EUR 150,- might be asked for to ensure attendance. It will be refunded if

the course was attended and the exam attempted. Credits, however, are granted

only after the successful exam only.

Ad hoc courses held by departments (guest lecturer, meeting etc.) cannot be

accepted as credits if not indicated otherwise. Title For students

IMPORTANT!

Attendance at lectures required

The university Council decided to change the Academic Rules relevant to the

attendance at lectures. This change has been approved by a unanimous vote of the

Council which included also the representatives of international students.

Accordingly the former free attendance has been changed to a required

attendance following international trends derived from the credit system. Credits are

given on the basis of workload to which lectures also belong. The opinion of the

Council was that the codification of free attendance is no longer compatible with

the new version of the Hungarian Higher Education Act whose 2004 version omitted

the paragraph on voluntary attendance.

The Council left for the Departments the way and degree of control. The number of

missed lectures is limited to three. Certificates of parallel study related activities will

be accepted on the formula which can be obtained at the Office of International

Relations.

In case of more than three unexcused absences from a subject the semester will not

LANGUAGE COURSES

Although most of the guest students join the English programme of the university and

study all subjects in English you may consider learning some basics in Hungarian as

well. Amongst the language courses offered by the Department of Foreign

Languages (building N) one of the most popular is ‘Hungarian as a foreign

language’.

Students can join the course at four levels: elementary, lower-intermediate,

intermediate and advanced. Due to the high number of foreign students studying at

our university and the limited places, guest students are recommended to enrol to

the course right at the beginning of the semesters. Enrolment takes place at the

Department of Foreign Languages. For more info please visit:

http://www.univet.hu/en/university/units/department-of-foreign-languages.

CLIMATE

Hungary is situated in the moderate temperate zone and has a

continental climate with four seasons. The hottest months are

July and August, when the temperature can reach 28-35 C. In

spite of the sometimes extremely hot summers students are

advised to be well prepared with warm clothes since in the

coldest months (December – January) temperature can fall

below zero degree, even -10 /-15 C is not extraordinary at this

time of the year.

CULTURAL FACILITIES

There is a wide range of cultural entertainment opportunities to choose from in

Budapest. There are theatrical performances and concerts of classical and light

music every day, with both Hungarian artists and guests from all over the world. For

more information: http://funzine.hu/en/, http://welovebudapest.com.

Grand opera and ballet are staged at the Opera House, whereas the Operetta

Theatre is the place to see and hear the operettas and musicals.

For English language productions look for Budapest Secret Theatre.

The Budapest Spring Festival and the Budapest Autumn Festival are two major

international music, theatre, film and art festivals. www.festivalcity.hu.

In June beside the Festival of Music, the Bridge Festival and the events of the Danube

Water Carnival take place.

In August one of the most inevitable locations of the cultural and

music life of Europe is found on the green island of Óbuda. The

one week long festival is called Sziget Fesztivál (Island Festival)

and was first organized in 1993. It is very popular among students

and young adults and year by year more and more people

come to the festival from Europe and other corners of the world.

Sziget is not only a festival, but a week-long opportunity to camp

out in the temporarily built festival city on a gorgeous island

where besides basic facilities posting and banking services,

restaurants, pubs, shops and a number of other amenities

provide comfort and entertainment. http://szigetfestival.com/.

From the programme of the numerous cinemas found in the city you can easily

choose your preferred movie with the help of the following website:

http://www.xpatloop.com/movies/. You can watch movies in original language

without subtitles at Palace MOM Park Cinema.

If you want to quench your thirst for literature there is a wide selection of quality

second-hand English books at Massolit Books & Café where you can enjoy a cup of

coffee or tea as well. You should also visit Bookstation in district

13.

If you would like to see Hungarian and international

contemporary dance, check out MU Theatre (www.mu.hu) or

Trafó House (www.trafo.hu) where you can attend modern

dance classes as well. Vibrant folk music is available in Fonó

For more sporty activities you can visit one of Hungary’s ten

National Parks or the caves around Budapest. The country is

famous for its several thermal baths and to top it all there are

huge parties in different baths

called Cinetrip.

Millenáris is a scientific and cultural centre close to Széll Kálmán Square. The complex

includes a park, a small artificial lake, cafés, an interactive museum and a theatre.

If you are interested in bike related programs contact the Hungarian Cyclists’ Club

which is the most significant civil organisation in the Hungarian cycling society. They

organize cycling tours as well as ‘Bike to Work’ and ‘Bike to School’ campaigns.

Last, but not least we have to mention some important cultural events at the

university. Probably the most formal from these events is the ‘Stork Ball’ organised in

each November for the newly enrolled students

called in local slang a “stork”.

Another important series of events takes place

usually in the springtime. It is called ‘Equus Days’ with

lots of fun and programmes like sport matches,

carnival, parties and the so called ‘International Day’

when foreign students can bring their culture a bit

closer to us and present a little bit the country where

they are from.

SPORTS

For details about the actual sport facilities, visit the P.E. Department at building G., 1st

floor. There is a fitness saloon at the dormitory as well.

GASTRONOMY

The Hungarian cuisine is a prominent feature of the Hungarian culture, just as much

as the art of hospitality. Traditional dishes such as the world famous goulash (gulyás

leves) are often flavoured with paprika (ground red peppers) and black pepper.

Thick, heavy Hungarian sour cream called tejföl is often used to soften the dishes

flavour. The famous Hungarian hot river fish soup called fisherman's soup or halászlé is

usually a rich mixture of several kinds of poached fish.

Other dishes are chicken paprikash, foie gras made of goose liver, pörkölt stew, and

vadas (game stew with vegetable gravy and dumplings).

Desserts include the iconic Dobos cake, Strudels (rétes) filled

with apple, cherry, poppy seed or cottage cheese, Gundel

pancake, plum dumplings (szilvás gombóc), somlói

dumplings and gesztenyepüré (cooked chestnuts mashed

with sugar and rum and split into crumbs,

topped with whipped cream) and of course

Túró Rudi a sweet chocolate bar filled with

lemony cottage cheese.

Palinka is a spirit native to Hungary and comes in a variety of flavours

including apricot (barack) and cherry (cseresznye). However, plum (szilva) is

the most popular flavour. Tokaji is the name of the wines from the region of

Tokaj-Hegyalja in Hungary. The name Tokaji (which is of Protected

Designation of Origin) is used for labelling wines from this wine

district. And finally Zwack Unicum is a bitter, dark-coloured

liqueur that can be drunk as an aperitif or after a meal, thus

helping the digestion as a blend of 40 Hungarian herbs has

been used to create this liqueur.
