Founded in 1974
Consists of 14 faculties and departments (natural, technical, biomedical, social, arts, and humanities)
Faculties are still legally independent entities to be integrated by the end of 2007.
About 15 000 students with vocational students: about 22 000

Teaching staff: 734 professors (from assistant professor level to full professors), together with 160 research and teaching assistants
Administrative staff: 370 people
The total budget at University of Split: around 30 million Euros for 2004. Government funding amounted to 70 % of this sum, whereas around 30 % of funding was obtained through other means (mostly student fees, research and professional projects).

Research activities are funded mostly through the funds of the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sports (114 research and 15 technological projects), while about 30 research projects have additional international funding.
Two independent research institutes (Mediterranean Agriculture and Fisheries and Oceanography).
The newly established Mediterranean Institute for Life Sciences (MedILS).

2004. Croatian Government launched strategy for education of the adults
Lifelong Learning is recognised as one of the crucial points towards the society of knowledge
Forthcoming Croatian laws about education of the adults and about Lifelong Learning
The laws emphasise knowledge, skills and capabilities regardless the types of
learning and training, i.e. formal, non-formal and informal learning.
