Your last chance to see one of Monet’s most luminescent paintings right here on campus! One of the most recognisable motifs of Impressionism – the Japanese bridge over the water lily pond at Monet’s garden at Giverny – is the subject of this masterpiece, on loan to the gallery from the Art Institute of Chicago.Admission: FREE.

When asked to respond to The Barber’s exhibition on American artist George Bellows, artist-in-residence Matthew Pagett was drawn to his illustrations made during his time at the Ohio State University from 1901 to 1904.

Pagett decided to explore the University of Birmingham in 2017 – taking in its communities, activities, cultures and traditions – drawn like a magnet to the mysterious Karen Lodge. He presents his findings in words and images as an academic calendar that sits somewhere between the digital and the analogue.Admission: FREE.

Exhibition: More real than life, 19th-century Portrait PhotographyUntil Sunday 24 September

The dawn of photography made commissioning self-portraits accessible to the masses. Now in its final few weeks, The Barber’s summer exhibition, co-curated by University postgraduate Art History and Curating students in partnership with the National Portrait Gallery, explores the phenomenon of the carte de visite in the second half of the 19th century.

This display looks more closely at the history of cartes de visite and their representation of celebrity and gender identity, revealing the secrets of the illusions created in these fascinating images. Admission: FREE.

Unmask the economic life of this once-great mediaeval empire, centred at the city of Constantinople (modern Istanbul), whose golden majesty astounded visitors from across the world.

Saturday 7 October Words words wordsIn this workshop we’ll be gathering words from all over the Barber to use in writing as openings, endings, and components of collage texts, and also having a go at writing alternative labels for artworks.

Saturday 9 December Morals and messagesIn response to the Pride and Persecution exhibition, we’ll discover the Old Testament stories painted by Jan Steen, along with tales behind other works in the galleries, and look at ways of writing then with a modern twist.

Saturday 20 January Boxes of delightAnother chance to explore the thousands of images of artworks in the Barber Photograph Room, by taking down boxes from the shelves at random and using their unexpected contents as inspiration for writing.

Exhibition: Pride and Persecution – Jan Steen’s Old Testament ScenesFriday 27 October 2017 – Sunday 28 January 2018

Jan Steen is one of the most engaging and brilliant artists of the 17th-century Dutch Golden age. Best known for humorous, gently moralising scenes of everyday life, he also produced some 60 remarkable paintings narrating scenes from the Bible and classical mythology and history.

This major exhibition centres on the Barber’s own Steen masterpiece, The Wrath of Ahasuerus. It explores the emerging Dutch nation’s links and associations with the Biblical Israelites, connections with paintings of similar subjects by Steen’s predecessors and with contemporary theatre and the Barber painting’s fascinating history. Beyond the Battlefields: Käthe Buchler’s Photographs of Germany in the Great War Friday 20 October 2017 – Sunday 14 January 2018

This exhibition focuses on the amateur photographer Käthe Buchler (1876–1930). Buchler photographed the German home front during the First World War. Her black and white images feature her family and community, wounded soldiers returning from the frontline and the nursing staff who treated them. The photographs will be shown alongside images, documents and objects related to the University of Birmingham’s role as a military hospital from 1914–18 and the members of staff who were involved in the conflict.

There is also another display of work by Buchler on display at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery from Friday 20 October – Sunday 14 January.Venue: Rotunda Gallery, Aston Webb BuildingAdmission: FREE exhibition.

Delta Field Grid: David PrenticeFriday 4 August – Friday 6 October

Presenting recently gifted works by David Prentice (1936–2014), this exhibition features 1970s large-scale triangular paintings referred to by the artist as ‘delta field grids’.

A founding member of Birmingham's internationally renowned IKON gallery, Prentice was commissioned by the University of Birmingham in 1970 to create Pleiades, a series of grids on mirrors.

This marked the beginning of a close relationship between Prentice, his artist-wife Dinah and the University; culminating in the gift of the three delta field grid paintings, several smaller works and Prentice's meticulously kept archive.Venue: Rotunda Gallery, Aston Webb BuildingAdmission: FREE exhibition.

How to find us

By rail: University Station, on the Cross-City line is five minutes’ walk to the centre of campus. Up to six trains an hour depart for the University from Birmingham New Street.

By bus: numbers 61, 62 and 63 travel to the University’s Edgbaston campus and all run frequently from the city centre.

By car: from the M6 motorway, leave at junction 6, at the end of the motorway, go over the flyover and join the A38, Bristol Road. The University is on your right, 2.5 miles from the city centre. From the South leave the M5 at junction 4 to join the A38. The University is on your left, eight miles from the motorway.
