Online Archive of UCI Historyucispace.lib.uci.edu/handle/10575/5882
In September 1960, The Irvine Company transferred title for 1,000 acres to the University of California. UC Irvine opened for classes in October 1965 with only 8 buildings, welcoming 119 faculty members and 1,589 students to a campus that was still a work in progress.
The official anniversary celebration begins with the 50th Commencement festivities in June 2015. The celebration will conclude with the June 2016 Commencement.
The Anteater Mascotwww.uci.edu/peter/
On November 30, 1965, students voted in the anteater as the official mascot, inspired by Johnny Hart’s “B.C.” comic strip and the feisty anteater that made a “zot” sound when his long sticky tongue zeroed in on prey. Even before the anteater mascot became official, the “Zot!” cheer had been adopted in October 1965. Today the anteater, now named Peter, prevails and thrives. A sign at Orange County’s John Wayne International Airport reads, “Welcome to Anteater Country.” Campus activities and services, from the student portal (ZotPortal) to the Career Center’s job listing portal (Zotlink), have incorporated the rallying cry. Student bills are paid through Zot Accounts and UCI sports fans refer to themselves collectively as ’Eater Nation. The campus convenience store is called Zot-n-Go, e-mail announcements to the campus community are ZotMails, and an emergency message from UCI to cell phones is a zotALERT.

It is important for parents and students to pay attention to and meet all deadlines, keep copies of all documents and correspondence, and read all e-mails from the financial aid office.
Scholarships
UC Irvine scholarships are awarded for outstanding academic achievement. Some scholarships have specific criteria such as leadership, community service, financial need, academic major, or special skills and talents. For a comprehensive list, visit www.ofas.uci.edu/content/Scholarships.aspx.

Blue + Gold Opportunity Plan Expands UC Accesswww.universityofcalifornia.edu/blueandgold
The University of California enrolls more low-income students (more than a third of all undergraduates) than any other top research university system. The Blue + Gold program expands access to UC by establishing a minimum level of grant aid for undergraduates with financial need and qualifying household incomes.
For California residents whose families qualify, Blue + Gold fully covers UC’s systemwide fees. Qualified students must be in their first four years of attendance, or first two years for transfer students. The program establishes a minimum amount of grants and scholarships
students can receive. Students with sufficient financial need can qualify for additional grants to cover other educational expenses such as books, transportation and room and board.
March 2
The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships recognizes that paying for a UCI education is a partnership between parents, students and the university. We provide resources and services to assist students and their families with grants, scholarships, work-study and loans. All eligible students and parents can receive some type of financial assistance.
The University of California currently provides grant and scholarship assistance to more than half of all undergraduates. The net price calculator available at http://www.ofas.uci.edu/content/Calculator.aspx gives families a better idea of the total amount of financial aid they might expect to receive.
Students must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form each year by March 2 to establish financial need and be considered for all types of need-based financial aid for the next academic year. FAFSA information: www.fafsa.gov
Students who are not eligible to file a FAFSA and qualify for the AB540 fee exemption can apply for certain types of financial aid by completing the California Dream Application by March 2. Dream Application information: www.caldreamact.org.
UCI Online Scholarship Application
deadline for current students.Apply for scholarships ranging from $500 to $10,000 through “My Aid” starting January 15, 2014.
Mark Your Calendar Today!Missing this deadline could mean losing grant, loan and/or work-study opportunities! Each year, file your FAFSA or California Dream Application and Cal Grant GPA Verification Form by March 2 to qualify for the highest possible financial aid award. No separate application is needed for the Blue + Gold plan; qualifying students automatically receive benefits.

Academic Advising at UCI
Your Student’s Path to Success
UC Irvine Undergraduate Academic Counselinghttp://ps.uci.edu/~stuaff/ac.html
UCI students are advised by highly qualified academic counselors who understand curriculum and degree requirements. Academic counseling is tailored to each student’s major and interest area. Academic counselors strive to give advice and coordinate with faculty to help students become more proactive and take advantage of campus resources.

Cooperative Approach
Many of the directors who oversee the counseling offices have worked at UCI for over 25 years. All academic counselors are dedicated to fostering effective communication and inter-school coordination. Counselors in the various academic disciplines work together to provide the best possible service to students.
Strategic Advantage
School-based academic counseling allows advisors to get to know the students. Because counselors are responsible for all facets of each student’s academic plan, undergraduates are likely to see the same faces from their first year through commencement. Closely connected to the faculty, UCI counselors have a comprehensive understanding of each school’s curricular structure, requirements and policies. This provides students with a strategic advantage: consistent advice as they advance toward graduation.

UC IRVINE GUIDE
www.housing.uci.edu
UC Irvine offers on-campus undergraduate housing for a smooth transition to college. UCI guarantees two years of on-campus housing to all single freshmen under age 25 enrolling for fall quarter who meet housing and admissions deadlines. Students must live on campus for their entire first year to be guaranteed housing in the second year. Transfer students are guaranteed one year of housing in either Arroyo Vista theme houses or on-campus apartments.
Your student’s RALive-in Resident Advisors (RA) serve students in the residence halls, theme houses and on-campus apartments. Trained to provide leadership, support and fun for student residents, they play important roles in helping freshmen and transfer students adjust to life on campus.
Appliances in student roomsOn-campus housing is well equipped to meet students’ needs. Each residence has a kitchen with refrigerator, stove and microwave. While UL-certified refrigerators not larger than 4.3 cubic feet are allowed in rooms, freestanding microwaves and electrical cooking units are not. Visit housing.uci.edu/communityLife/What_to_Bring.html.
Getting along with a roommateLiving successfully with roommates requires flexibility and a willingness to openly and tactfully communicate. Sharing a room can foster personal growth and lifelong friendship. By establishing ground rules early, roommates increase their chances of getting along. RAs can help in this process.
Resources for sick studentsAs a safety precaution, Student Housing requests that all students with special medical conditions report them to a roommate, RA and community housing office. Residents must inform their community housing office of all suspected or actual cases of a contagious disease such as hepatitis, meningitis or

chicken pox. Roommates or RAs may request meals for a sick student who has a valid meal card. Students may make appointments for an evaluation by a medical professional at the UCI Student Health Center, www.shs.uci.edu.
The University of Californiawill be smoke-free effective January 1, 2014 including on-campus housing communities. For information about the UC Irvine implementation of this all-UC policy, please visit www.chancellor.uci.edu/smoke-free.
Drugs and alcohol in campus housingUC complies with federal laws limiting alcohol use to students age 21 and over and prohibiting the use of illegal drugs. UCI offers many drug and alcohol-free activities. www.healtheducation.uci.edu
Living off-campusStudents who live off campus can get help finding an apartment or roommate by visiting Housing Administrative Services (G458 Student Center), housing.uci.edu/services/Off-Campus_Housing.html, or checking the Anteater Housing Network, offcampus.housing.uci.edu.

UCI: Serious About Student Safety
www.police.uci.edu
The UC Irvine Police Department (UCIPD) provides a safe and secure educational environment for the entire campus, and Irvine is California’s safest city. All UCI Police Officers are state-certified and exercise full law enforcement powers to make arrests, uphold all applicable laws and provide any necessary enforcement services. The UCIPD takes great pride in its community policing efforts and works closely with the City of Irvine Police Department and with the Orange County Fire Authority. In addition to 24-hour police patrol and response services, the UCIPD provides:
• 24-hour 9-1-1 Communications Center to immediately dispatch police, fire and medical services anywhere on campus. All calls are routed directly to the UCIPD’s Communications Center.
• Emergency Blue Light Phones located throughout campus provide 24-7 emergency response. The caller’s location is provided directly to the dispatcher for 9-1-1 and all Blue Light calls.
• zotALERT text and email emergency notification system. One of several UCI emergency communication modes. Students are strongly advised to sign up for zotALERTs at www.oit.uci.edu/zotalert.
• Campus safety escort program. Free service available during evening hours, seven days a week. Call (949) 824-SAFE (824-7233) to request an escort anywhere on campus. www.police.uci.edu/services/safety_escorts.html.

Campus Housing: Safety and Security Firsthousing.uci.edu/communityLife/Health_and_Safety.html
Resident Advisors (RAs) are available around the clock to maintain a safe and secure environment. Although there is no curfew in any on-campus housing community, all residential facilities are locked 24 hours a day. Students must use keys to access both residences and rooms at all times. Parents can reinforce UCI’s safety precautions by reminding students to avoid permitting access to strangers, leaving room doors propped open or unlocked, and to stay alert.

Wellness and Health: Coping with Transitionwww.whcs.uci.edu
College is an exciting time in a student’s life. At the same time, the first year can also be overwhelming: connecting with new friends, academic demands, finding one’s way around campus, missing old friends and juggling life’s other demands. With change comes stress, even when change is welcome and positive.
During this time, it is not uncommon for students to experience a range of emotions including depression and anxiety. Most students settle into a routine and adapt well to the transition. However, there are times in which the adjustment is more challenging. Some students may not directly communicate their distress, but their difficulty may be evident in their behaviors or emotional expression.
Signs to look for:
• Significant changes in sleep or eating habits
• Personal hygiene deterioration
• Significant changes in behavior
• Angry or threatening outbursts
• Thinking or expressing ideas/thoughts of harming themselves or others
• Changes in levels of functioning (e.g. decreased academic performance, social withdrawal)
• Evidence of drug or alcohol abuse
• Paranoia
• Anxiety, nervousness or agitation
• Forgetfulness or difficulty concentrating
• Low energy level or continuous sadness
• Irritability or low frustration tolerance
• Significant weight gain or loss
• Procrastination
The UC Irvine Counseling Center offers a wide range of services and referrals to help students regain confidence.
If you believe a student would be helped by therapy, a good way to suggest a counseling visit is to simply listen, express concern and recommend a Counseling Center appointment.
Safeguarding Your Student’s Health
Research indicates that wellness supports academic and personal success. Good health is about balancing life in all areas.
Stress BasicsStress is the primary health concern for students. While it is not possible to eliminate stress, how one responds to these experiences affects physical and mental health. Here are some tips for your student:
Sleep
• Too little sleep results in decreased motivation, memory and concentration.
• By studying well before exams and learning to take regular study breaks, students can avoid burnout and fatigue.
• Noise, light, substance use and poor health habits can compromise sleep. Earplugs and sleeping masks help sleep difficulties.
Exercise
• Exercising at least three days each week. Aerobic activities – walking, running, swimming, dancing or many other pursuits – satisfy this requirement.
• Exercise can help students make friends, relax after a test and allow time for reflection.
Healthy Diet
• Balanced meals help build a healthy immune system. UC Irvine’s food service offers students healthy menu options.
• Students should select “Peter’s Pick” healthy eating logo-identified items.
Relaxation
• Relaxation decreases metabolic heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate and muscle tension. Deep breathing and stretching help manage test anxiety and improve academic performance.
• Relaxation takes practice. Students should take time for relaxation exercise for at least 15 minutes each day.
Involvement
• Involvement with campus and community organizations can give students a healthy break from academic routine.
• Building relationships outside the classroom provides students significant mental health benefits.
• Parents can encourage students to join groups or activities that appeal to their interests.
