THE JUNIOR DOCTORS’ fight is not onlyabout rates of pay, staffing and hospital fines. Itis about the future of NHS itself. The Tory

government is imposing additional financial andstaffing burdens on the NHS in order to presentit as a ‘failure’ requiring drastic ‘reform’. Thisreform will, of course, take the shape of moremarketisation, charges to patients, moreprivate sector provision and the outright

privatisation of NHS services and facilities.

The Communist Party of Britain (CPB) expressesits solidarity with the Junior Doctors in their struggleagainst the new contracts imposed by thegovernment and calls upon all unions to act insolidarity with them to save the NHS.

We therefore urge unity with the BMA and otherhealth unions to protect free and high qualityhealthcare. All workers and their unions must uniteto stop the Tory privatisation and destruction of theNHS.

The Department of Health’s claim that the newJunior Doctors’ contract is necessary to deliver thepromised 7-day NHS is a Tory lie. The 7-day NHS isalready in place, except that the government is notprepared to fund it adequately, especially at

weekends, relying on overworked Junior Doctorsworking unsocial hours with insufficient staff support.

The Tories have repeatedly attempted to discredit theJunior Doctors and their unions, showing contemptfor their overwhelming rejection of the new contract.After meeting solid resistance from the overwhelmingmajority of the workforce, Health Secretary JeremyHunt and his government took the most anti-democratic course of action by seeking to impose it.

In reality, the Tory government is acting on behalf ofbig multinational companies who want to privatisethe NHS for the sake of profit. Very methodically,the NHS is being carved up and handed out toprivate companies. To facilitate this process, thegovernment hopes to demoralise already exhausted,disheartened doctors, denigrating their efforts andtheir commitment and hoping they will not resist thecuts, burdens and privatisation.

Privatisation is already well underway, especially inEngland where the government has direct controlover the NHS. In Scotland, the EU Commission isforcing the SNP government to increase the role ofthe private sector in funding and managing new NHSprojects.

The Labour administration in Wales is being punishedfinancially by Tory central government for failing toprivatise more parts of the Welsh NHS.

Significantly, the Scottish and Welsh governmentshave put the interests of staff, patients and the NHSfirst by extending their contracts with the JuniorDoctors and their unions, rather than imposing paycuts and even more flexible working.

The peoples of England, Scotland and Wales hold theNHS very close to their hearts. It continues to be atremendous social achievement to have a service freeto all at the point of delivery. At a time when everyaspect of the Welfare State is under savage attack,the NHS is no exception to Tory plans. In fact theNHS is a key target.

Everyone in Britain must realise that the fight to savethe NHS has reached a new phase. The Torygovernment’s attack on Junior Doctors in England ispart of this overall fight and consultants, nursing staffand all healthcare workers who give their life andlabour to make NHS what it is, will be next.

It is also no coincidence that the Junior Doctors havebeen targeted just as new Tory anti-trade legislationlimits still further the right of workers to take

industrial action, even more severely in essentialservices such as healthcare. Therefore Communist Party urges all unions and allworking people to unite with the Junior Doctorsand all other health workers and their unions tosave the NHS from privatisation.

The Communist Party calls for:l Withdrawal of the imposed Junior Doctors’ newcontracts in Englandl No changes in the classification of unsocial hours. l No changes to pay progression.l The resignation of Health Secretary Jeremy Huntfor misrepresenting hospital mortality rates and failingto settle the dispute along the same lines as theScottish and Welsh agreements.l An end to the privatisation of NHS services andfacilities.
