Life at Compass Housing Alliance is made up of hello and goodbye. Hello, as we welcome people to our overnight shelters, hygiene center, day center or any of our housing programs. Goodbye as we wish people Godspeed as they move on to more stable, healthy lives, as they reconnect with family, perhaps secure employment, achieve sobriety, find community. The year 2012 had major hello’s and goodbye’s as we broke ground for the new Nyer Urness House in Ballard, opened Dekko Place apartments, and said goodbye to Executive Director, Rick Friedhoff.

Throughout these transitions in 2012, Compass Housing Alliance stayed true to its mission of developing affordable housing and providing essential services to people who are homeless. Men, women, and families found support for their basic needs, a shelter bed, a transitional home or an affordable apartment. Many more were able to stay connected – over 10,580 people received mail, including 800 folks who received their election

ballots and were able to vote in November.

Like the patchwork quilts that cover all Compass Housing Alliance beds, these pieces come together to make a whole. With your support, the faith of our partners in ministry, the hard work of our clients, and the skill of a talented staff, lives are improved and our community is strengthened. Thank you.

A Patchwork of Hello and Goodbye

Of the 51 families that were part of the HomeStep Family Program during 2012, twelve stabilized and moved into their own housing.

At the Adult Service Center, staff and case managers worked tirelessly with day guests and helped 43 of them move from the streets into permanent housing in 2012.

The CSO received over 800 ballots for the November election. No other program in all of Washington helps so many people on the margins of society be part of our democracy.

2012 Highlights & Program Outcomes

Renton Veterans CenterForty-five children lived at the Veterans Center in 2012. Twenty-nine households moved into more permanent housing.

Pioneer Square Men’s Program133 men moved from this program into permanent or long-term transitional housing.

Cascade Women’s ProgramThirty women moved into service enriched transitional housing or permanent housing.

First Church Men’s ShelterSixty-three men moved into service enriched transitional housing or secured permanent housing.

Shoreline Veterans Center82% of residents moved into permanent or more independent housing

Nyer Urness HouseWe broke ground in February and construction began on this permanent housing project for 80 homeless individuals.

Ask the quilting group at Bethany Lutheran Church in Greenlake when they began their quilt ministry and they will answer:

“Longer ago than any of

us can remember!”

These dedicated volunteers have been sewing quilts together for at least 30 years. These days, 12 members gather every Wednesday for four hours to cut, sew, converse, eat lunch, and sew some more.

“This is a tangible way to show our faith. It’s a way to give something beautiful and thoughtful that can be their own, not just an ugly hand-me-down.”

Quilting for a Cause

The Bethany Quilters are not the only group that provides quilts to Compass. 2012 was a big year for quilts as other church groups, including Ballard First Lutheran and Queen Anne Lutheran, began to make 80 quilts for Nyer Urness House--one for each apartment that will be occupied by a formerly homeless resident. At Compass Housing Alliance, providing a warm bed at night is paramount to our mission. The warmth that comes from a special quilt hand-made with love is at the heart of what we do.

Chubb Group of Insurance Co transformed the back yard at Burien House, a program that provides housing to 7 veterans who are working or going to school.

“It has been a great experience for me to be a part of the Compass Housing team for the last 16 years. It has been challenging, frustrating, inspiring, and fun at the same time. I have had the opportunity to meet interesting people; do interesting and meaningful work; and to feel the genuine support of many people. It’s hard to ask for more.

There is never a perfect time to say good bye, but for me and for Compass Housing, October 2012 is a good time. We have a really good team in place, strong relationships with government funders, and many strong partners in ministry. I tell you without qualification that the management team is blessed with the necessary talents, commitment, and perspective to lead Compass Housing to a new and better future.”

Rick Friedhoff began as Executive Director of The Compass Center in February 1996. During more than 16 years, Rick oversaw the organization through tremendous growth, an earthquake, merger . . .

Dekko Place OpensGeorge, a Navy veteran, heard about Dekko Place

soon after finding out that rent would be raised at his last apartment. Realizing that it was too expensive for his fixed income, he turned to Seattle Housing to find a low-income apartment and was faced with up to a year and a half waiting list. Because of Dekko Place, George can afford to buy groceries and live a comfortable life as a retiree. He takes advantage of the buses right outside and is a member of Gethsemane Lutheran next door.

On May 30, 2012, we celebrated the opening of Dekko Place, an apartment building with 50 units of housing for low-income adults and families. The project was a collaboration with Gethsemane Lutheran Church and included an extensive remodel of their worship and fellowship space. The building also includes the Hope Center, which houses Mary’s Place, a center for homeless women and children.
