8. Detail BRONCO Ta Kou {ZA1694) 26 March l 971 to 20 October 1971 1 Officer/66 Enllsted/18 Naval Advisors

Detail BRONCO was tasked with the construction of a 30 man ACTOV Radar Facflity and cantonment for the Vietnamese Navy on top of the 442 meter south knoll of Nui Ta Kou, the construction of a two mile double bituminous surface treated access road to the radar site, the construction of a 100 man base camp. and the upgrading of five miles of access road from Route QL-l to the base camp.

C. Detail MUSTANG Ca Mau (WR1713) 20 Apri 1 1971 to 20 October 1971 1 Officer/81 Enlisted/18 Naval Advisors

Detail MUSTANG was tasked with the construction of a 500 man Vietnamese Navy Intermediate Level Support Base at Ca Mau. Included were berthing. messing. administrative. storage, medical. and boat repair facil1tfes as well as utilities distribution systems and perimeter lighting and fencing.

0. Detail MAVERICK Mui Dinh (BN8356) 9 April 1971 to 26 September 1971 l Officer/35 Enlisted/4 Naval Advisors

Detail MAVERICK was tasked with the construction of a 50 man ACTOV Radar Facility and cantonment, including the rehabilitation of two existing masonry structures at the site of an abandoned French lighthouse at Mui Dinh. a 225 meter hill 20 miles south of Phan Rang. Also included were the installation of utilities and the pioneering and construction of a one mile. double bituminous surface treated road from a cove on the south China Sea to the ACTOVRAO site.

E. Detail PINTO Binh Thuy, RVN 29 March 1971 to 13 October 1971 5 Enlisted/6 Naval Advisors

Detail PINTO was tasked with the direct support of Detail MUSTANG. Ca Mau, including the procurement and delivery of food, beverages. ammunition. and detail supplies. The deta11 additionally provided a trans-shipment point for construction materials coming from Bien Hoa and operated three LCH-8 landing craft in support of Ca Mau during the course of the deploy­ment. Detail PINTO additionally undertook the construction of revetments and other small facilities for VAL-4 in Binh Thuy early in the deployment.

Detail COLT, the waterfront construct1on crew in RVN. was tasked with the construction of an ammi lift p1er at Tan An to facilitate sand offload at that s1te; the construction of a 40 foot wharf and floating Pl AMMI P1er for the Regional Defense Force and their U.S. Marine Advisors at Quang Xuyen. in the Rung Sat Special Zonei and the construction of a 440 foot tfmber pile footbridge at the Vietnamese Navy dependent shelter site at An Kh nh.

Detail TROTTER, NMCB FIVE 1 s Mobile Construction Team, was tasked with the completion of utilities left undone at the Chau Doc, Tan Chau, and Cho Moi ACTOV bases by other units of the Third Naval Construction Brigade, due to nonavailability of certain critical materials. Working primarily on pier and POL systems, the detail installed pumps and piping, tested the POL systems. and provided POL, water, and electrical services to the berthing piers.

H. Detail PALOMINO Phan Rang (BN6080) 9 April 1971 to 16 September 1971 2 Enlsited

Detail PALOMINO was tasked with the direct support of Deta i l MAVERICK at Mui Dinh including the procurement and delivery of food, beverages, ammunition, mail, and supplies as well as the arrangement of helicopter flights from Phan Rang to Mui Dinh for visitors.

Detail CORRAL was tasked with the construction of the new base camp, Camp Covington, to be used as the future home of the backup Pacific Alert Battalion. the commencement of work on the Guam Naval Mineral Products Facility, and the provision of self-help support for commands on Guam .

J. Detail X-RAY Naval Air Station. Cubi Point, Philippine Islands 20 March 1971 to 17 September 1971 1 Officer/70 Enlisted

Detail X-RAY was assigned urgent minor construction tasks in support of project NOAH - the relocation of the Patrol Squadrons and Fleet Air Wing stationed at Naval Air Station Sangley Point. PT to NAS Cubi Point by 1 September 1971. Included in the project was the rehabilitation and construction of office spRces and utilities. The detail was also assigned the upgrade of the Seabee compound in preparation for NMCB 133's detail slated to continue work on Project 703 - the relocation of dependent housing from Sangley to Cubi Point. The detail performed several self-help projects on base.

K. Detail CLYDESDALE Naval Air Station. Sangley Point, Philippine Islands

8 July 1971 to 30 August 1971 1 Officer/37 Enlisted

Detail CLYDESDALE was assigned the task of prepa ing and moving, via barge, 48 duplex and one single unit of Navy dependent housing from Sangley Point to NAVSTA Subic. A stringent deadline of 1 September was placed on this project, as. on that date , Sangley would be turned over to the Philippine Government.

Detail SEAHORSE was tasked with the recovery of a Navy a1rcraft which had lost its landing gear while attempting a landing at Pagan, about 300 miles north of Guam. The detail constructed braces for the plane, jacked it into place on a lowboy trailer, and returned it to Guam in the well dee~ of a YFU landing craft

1 . Detail HUSKY Naval Station, Adak, Alaska 25 March 1971 to 23 October 1971 l Officer/70 Enlisted

Detail HUSKY was tasked with the complete construction of a Flrst and Second Class Petty Officer's Mess for Naval Station. Adak. Covering some 9000 square feet, the project included the construction of finish cabinet work such as bars and inlaid dance floors, plus installation of kitchens. carpeting and interior furnishings as well as erection of the precast concrete tilt up panel building and installation of all utilities. The detail additiona l ly undertook self help tasks upgrading the station theater and hospital and repairing approximately two miles of station roads.

Throughout the deployment, se l f help deta i ls were detached to assist various commands in the Pac i f i c area. At Sa n Miguel, s1K men were tasked to lead up a 4 0 man station self help division in the upgrading of the enlisted men 1 s club. In CONUS, a majority of the work revolved around barracks and club rehab i litations.

A. 1-15 March 1971. RVN. Guam and Adak Advanced parties departed Port Hueneme California

B. 20-26 March 1971. The Guam and RVN detachments departed Port Hueneme Detail MUSTANG and elements of Detail X-RAY moved on site at Cubi Point. PI. Detail HUSKY embarked for NAVSTA Adak. A 6 man delf-help detail moved on base at NAVCOMMSTA San Miguel. PI.

C. 26 March 1971. Detail BRONCO deployed to Nui Ta Kou to re11eve NMCB 74 Detail KILO ;n the construct1on of an ACTOV Radar Site and access road and upgrade operations on Route 341.

D. 27 March 1971. Elements of Detail COLT deployed to Tan An to commence installation of a pier in order to facilitate sand off­load operations at the site of the proposed intermediate support base.

E. 29 March 1971. Detail PINTO deployed to Binh Thuy to undertake construction of modif1cat1ons at VAL-4 and provide support to Ca Mau.

F. 9 April 1971. Detail MAVERICK deployed to Mui Dinh to relieve NMCB 74 Detail JULIETT in the construction of an ACTOV Radar Site and access road. Oetafl PALOMINO. a detachment from Detail MAVERICK, deployed to Phan Rang to provide logistic and transportation services for Oetafl MAVERICK.

G. 19 April 1971. Twenty-one personnel deployed from Guam to Cubi Point NAS, Philfppfnes Islands. Detail MUSTANG then deployed to Ca Mau, RVN to relieve NMCB 3 Detail BOREALIS in the construction of an intermediate level support ACTOV base.

H. 20 April 1971. Detail COLT moved off site at Tan An upon transfer of project from Thirty-Second NCR to OICC. RVN.

I. 23 May 1971. Detail COLT deployed to Quang Xuyen to commence construction of a pier.

J. 28 June 1971. Detail TROTTER, comprised of ten personnel deployed to Chau Doc to commence work on remaining construction items at Chau Doc, Tan Chau, and Cho Moi .

CC. 7 November 1971. The RVN delay party departed Saigon for Los Angeles, California marking the end of Mobile Construction Battalion deployments to the Republic of Vietnam. The Battalion Flag shifted to Detail CORRAL.

DD. 14 November 1971 . The NAVCOMMSTA San Miguel self help detail returned to Detail CORRAL.

EE. 22 November 1971 . Detail CORRAL departed Guam for Point Mugu, California marking the end of the 1971 deployment.

22 Aprtl 1971. Rear Admiral Spencer R. SMITH, COMCBPACt Captain Robert H. NELSON, OICC Marianas, and Captain David C. MORE, CO, P C Guam, visited Detail CORRAL.

2- 3 Mai 1971. Although typhoon Amy came within 80 miles of Guam. w nds reached a velocity of 60 knots and caused typhoon condition l to be set. NMCB FIVE responded to the potential disaster by supplying diesel generators to critical areas designated by PWC Guam.

24 MaY 1971. At Detail BRONCO, Nu1 Ta Kou, RVN, the road crew returned to camp on Route 341 detonated a mine containing approximately 20 pounds of e~plosfves with a lowboy trailer. No personnel were injured.

26 May 1971. A rockhaul dumptruck traveling on Route 341 returning to Detail BRONCO's base camp detonated a land mine. No personnel injuries occured.

31 Mai 1971. Commander Robert A. SCHADE, JR., CEC, USN, was relieved as Commanding Officer. U. S. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion FIVE, by Commander Robert J. McHUGH, Jr., CEC, USN. Present at the change of command was Rear Admiral Foster M. LALOR, COM3NCB, who delivered appropriate remarks.

8 June 1971. Captain Donald W. WlTTSCHIEBE, COM30NCR, was the honored guest at the block1ay1ng ceremony which symbolized the beginning of vertical construction on the Guam Seabee Camp.

13 June 1971. The first truck in Detail BRONCO's mine sweep team detonated a land mine on Route 341. One person, BU3 Michael DEZIK was seriously injured and MEDIVACED. Several others received minor injuries and were treated on site. Later in the day, a second truck 1n Detail BRONCO's mine sweep team detonated a land mine on Route 341 resulting in two persons, LTJG John A. LARSON, OIC Detail BRONCO, and CM3 James A. ROSS, receiving serious injuries and being MEOTVACEO.

17 June 1971. Detail BRONCO's sweep team found three 30 pound TNT mines on Route 341. Two mines were blown in place and the third was detonated by a scraper after the area was checked by the sweep team with negative results.

18 June 1971. A scraper returning from a job site on Route 341 detonated a mine containing dynamite and decomposed composition B near Detail BRONCO. No personnel injuries resulted.

30 June 1971. Three mines, one on the ACTOVRAD access road, were found by Oeta11 BRONCO's sweep team and blown in place.

22 July 1971. A 5 ton cargo truck in Detail BRONCO's sweep team d onated a mine containing approximately 50 pounds of explosives on Route 341. Two personnel. SW3 Frederick c. REYNOLDS and HMl

10 Au~ust 1971. UTC William L. LOGAN, CPOIC of Detail TROTTER, was kille when his jeep overturned enroute to Binh Thuy from OPBASE Tan Chou.

18 August 1971. Detail BRONCO's sweep team found and detonated in place two land mines on Route 341.

18 August 1971. Twenty men fro m Detail CORRAL worked into the night to help clean up an oil spill which threatened the beaches at Gab Gab and Proteus Point on Guam.

24 August 1971 . Rear Admiral Henry J. JOHNSON, CEC, USN, Commanding Officer, Western Division, Naval Facilities Engineering Command, visited Detafl HUSKY, Adak.

28 Au@ust - 3 SeRtember 1971. Rear Admiral Walter M. ENGER, CEC, USN,ommander,AVFACENGCOM, and Chief of Civil Engineers, visited Details X-RAY and CLYDESDALE in the Philippines, Detail STALLION 1n Bien Hoa, and Detail CORRAL in Guam.

11 September 1971. Rear Admiral Patrick J, HANNIFIN, Commandant, Thirteenth Naval District, visited NMCB FIVE Detail HUSKY, Adak.

16 September 1971. CBC Bien Hoa was renamed "Camp William L. LOGAN" in a ceremony officiated by Rear Admiral Foster M. LALOR, Jr., Commander. THIRD Naval Construction Brigade.

21 Se¥tember 1971. EA2 Donald REHM was wounded by sniper f1re at Detai MUSTANG, ISB Ca Mau.

25 September 1971. The Bien Hoa Army/Air Force complex received six rounds of 122MM rocket fire. Detail STALLION remained at Red Alert for two hours from 0430 to 0630.

25 September 1971. The ACTOVRAD Facilities at Mui Dinh were accepted by the Commander, Second Coastal Zone, Vietnamese Navy.

AA. 27 September 1971. The ACTOV Intermediate Support Base at Ca Mau was turned over to the V1etnan1ese Navy with minor punchlist items remaining.

BB. 28 September 1971. Two rounds of 122MM rocker fire impacted approximately 300 yards from Camp Logan, Bien Hoa at 0700. All hands remained at Red Alert for one-half hour.

CC. 30 September 1971. The first vehicle in Detail BRONCO's sweep team detonated a concealed mine on Route 341 wounding three personnel and destroying the vehicle. Later in the day a second mine was found and detonated in place.

DD. 19 October 1971. The Adak First and Second Class Petty Officer 1 s Mess was accepted by the Commanding Officer. Naval Station Adak.

EE. 20 October 1971. The ACTOVRADAR site at Ta Kou was turned over to the Commander. THIRD Coastal Zone, Vietnamese Navy. With the concurrent completion of all work at ISB Ca Mau, this marked the completion of all taskings assigned to the THlRO Naval Construction Brigade.

FF. 31 October 1971. NMCB THREE's Advance Party arrived at Detail CORRAL.

GG. 6 November 1971. The THIRD Naval Construction Brigade was decommtssioned in ceremonies at Camp Logan, Bien Hoa. Seven members of NMCB FIVE were decorated by Commodore Lan Nguon Thanh, the Vietnamese Vice Chief of Naval Operations.

HH. 22 November 1971. NMCB THREE relieved NMCB FIVE at the Guam deployment site. NMCB FIVE departed for CONUS and completed its 1971 deployment.
