This week, we celebrated the beginning of Lent with special Ash Wednesday prayer services. As a College community we were reminded about the call to prayer, fasting and giving during these 40 days . In 2016, all money raised during our Lenten Appeal will be shared between Mantantubig, Philippines (where our OLSH Sisters are working with the poor and disadvantaged) and Caritas (Project Compassion). Please support our efforts – donations can be made at College reception.

At our Bienvenue evening last week the parents of our Year 11 and 12 students had the opportunity to listen to our guest speaker Darren Pereira from Success Integrated. He presented a number of strategies which parents can adopt to help their daughter achieve greater success in their studies. One of these strategies is listening to music; specifically Baroque music.

Many studies have shown that baroque music has brain-enhancing qualities which regulate the heart beat and synchronise breathing. It has been found that Baroque music stabilises mental, physical and emotional rhythms, thereby promoting a level of concentration and focus which enhance learning. It is even believed that some students have found Maths classes less challenging when Baroque music is playing gently in the background.

The Maths Hub tutorial program starts Monday 8 February and will be held weekly, after school on a Monday in the Library from 3.30pm - 4.30pm. Maths Hub is open to all students at OLSH. It is to support students and help students gain confidence with their Mathematics. Homework can be completed, help can be sought or students can work quietly on their own and get help when required. Teachers and peer tutors will be available to support students. Students will be required to sign in and out for attendance records as these will be used for College Colours.

Week 1 and our student leaders have hit the ground running. On Friday 5 February they participated in a leadership workshop run by YLead where: they were given the opportunity to get to know each other, learnt some valuable leadership skills and began planning for the year ahead. What a wonderful group of students we have leading us in 2016!

I learned that to be good leaders, we have to all walk together towards the same goal. We learned this through a simple practical where all our feet were tied together and had to successfully walk together. It was definitely challenging but also lots of fun! Maria Farag 11GL

Parents are asked to familiarise themselves with the College uniform regulations. These can be found in your daughter’s planner:

Dress Length - not to be any shorter than 3cm above the knee.

Blazer - must be worn to and from school if the jumper is worn. The jumper cannot be the outer garment.

PE uniform - can only worn on days where there is a scheduled dance or PE class.

Lateness - parents must contact the school via a note, phone call or email if your daughter will be late for school. Three times late in a term without notification will mean your daughter will remain after school on a Thursday.

Piercings - no facial piercings.

If you have any questions regarding the College regulations please don’t hesitate to contact your daughter’s homeroom teacher, Year Level Coordinator or myself.

**Please see Student Reception for any lost property as items of value have been handed in over the College break.**

Six Habits of Highly Grateful People by Jeremy Adam Smith November 20 2013 Gratitude is the mental tool we use to remind ourselves of the good stuff. Gratitude is the lens that helps us to see the things that don’t make it onto our lists of problems to be solved. It’s a spotlight that we shine on the people who give us the good things in life. It’s a bright red paintbrush we apply to otherwise invisible blessings, like clean streets or health or enough food to eat.

Gratitude doesn’t make problems and threats disappear. We can lose jobs, we can be attacked on the street, we can get sick. I remember those harrowing times at unexpected moments: my heart beats faster, my throat constricts. My body wants to hit something or run away, one or the other. But there’s nothing to hit, nowhere to run. The threats are indeed real, but at that moment, they exist only in memory or imagination. I am the threat; it is me who is wearing myself out with worry.

That’s when I need to turn on the gratitude. If I do that enough, suggests the psychological research, gratitude might just become a habit. What will that mean for me? It means, says the research, that I increase my chances of psychologically surviving hard times, that I stand a chance to be happier in the good times. I’m not ignoring the threats; I’m appreciating the resources and people that might help me face those threats; I’m appreciating the resources and people that might help me face those threats. Year 11 is a challenging year for students as they enter their senior schooling years. Any transition and change will cause a degree of stress as students are required to move out of their ‘comfort zone’ to tackle new challenges, and acquire new skills and knowledge.

In light of this, the first day back for the Year 11 for 2016 was organised to skill students with a range of ideas, techniques and networks that they will be able to utilise throughout their senior years.

The Transition Day was designed to achieve the following benefits for the participating students:

Taking stock of their strengths and development needs as learners

Developing a SMART study plan

Managing their time effectively including completing all scheduled schooling tasks and homework

Maintaining a positive approach to their studies

Dealing with setbacks and developing resilience

Managing a balance between their school and extra-curricular activities.

The day was organised with a balance of interactive sessions, ice breakers and guest speakers.

Hanna Farrah, was a success speaker from TSSM, which provides specialised programs for Senior Students. Judy Thomas, the School Counsellor addressed the girls on managing stress and anxiety during senior years. She also emphasised mindfulness meditation.

Here is some feedback of the day from the Year 11s:

‘I learnt that balance is very important during the senior years and that we need time to study, but also have time to relax and spend time with friends. In order to have balance we need to be organised and plan our time well so that we can get the best results and be the healthiest people possible.’ Chloe Hart ‘I really enjoyed the speaker Hanna, because his ideas and beliefs on motivation and persistence for learning and achieving your goal were really inspiring and I hope that I can achieve my goal this year as well.’ Dani Hammond

‘That the brain IS LIKE a muscle, and as with all muscles it can be grown, strengthened and toned’! Piwainashe Kahonde

‘Even though the senior years can be extremely stressful, it is important to find time to relax and meditate rather than constantly

worry about school work.’ Yvonne Makowska

‘After subtracting all of the essential commitments such as school, sleep and eating, a person is left with approximately 58 hours per week that they have to divide between all of their activities, leaving over three hours per day as spare.’ Maria Farag

The students finished the day with writing up individual Action Plans for the Year which will be followed with throughout the year.

OLSH College offers a dynamic and exciting debating and public speaking program to students across all year levels. I warmly invite students to consider joining the debating and public speaking team this year. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a number of inter-school competitions run by the Debating Association of Victoria. Students will work closely with coaches, team-mates and external trainers to develop their skills in preparation for competitions.

Why try debating? Do you enjoy a good argument?!

The OLSH debating team is all about fun and skill development. The intense competition allows students to work closely in teams and to build lasting friendships with their peers. Regardless of the final results, students gain deep satisfaction and self-esteem from preparing and presenting their debates.

Many students find class presentations and public speaking at school very daunting. Debating allows students to develop strong communication skills in a fun and supportive environment. Debating provides a number of public speaking strategies and trains students to communicate in a manner that is engaging. These communication skills allow students to excel in speaking and listening tasks across all of their subjects.

Debating and public speaking allows students to examine the many sides of complex and controversial issues that affect our society. Students learn to investigate, discuss, reason and present their ideas clearly and persuasively. Debating students learn to think rigorously and critically about issues and to find innovative solutions to problems.

Coming up:

The Debating Victoria Senior School Competition will commence in just a few weeks, while the Junior Competition will run during Terms 3 and 4. A number of public speaking competitions will be offered to students throughout the year. There will also be opportunities to earn house points through an inter-house debating competition in Term 3.

Term 1:

Senior DAV Competition (Years 9-11)

Venue: Caulfield Grammar School, Glen Eira Rd, Caulfield

Round 1: Wednesday 2 March 7-9pm

Round 2: Tuesday 22 March 7-9pm

Round 3: Tuesday 19 April 7-9pm

Round 4: Tuesday 10 May 7-9pm

Round 5: Tuesday 26 July 7-9pm

Please encourage your daughter to consider debating as an exciting school activity this year. Should you have any queries please contact me via email; [email protected]

Term 1 2016 is officially underway and our Hairspray rehearsals now back on and running at full speed. At the end of 2015, we completed a reasonable amble through Act 1, which was great going given that Term 4 was such a busy term with exams for students, reporting for teachers, camps, graduations, meetings and a myriad of other tasks that need to be completed. In the holidays a range of tasks including set design negotiations, theatre meetings, props shopping and costume construction continued. Well done everyone! We have commenced the year by throwing ourselves into Act 2, which we hope to have sketched out by the end of week 6. Weeks 7 – 9 will begin the process of putting the whole show together with the crew operating set and beginning to order and organise ourselves for our week in the theatre. The final aspects of our set are currently being constructed and painted and will soon be used in rehearsals. Costumes, under the supervision of our efficient costume team, are coming along. In a week or two we will be completing our fittings and sorting out any extra bits and pieces needed by various members of the cast. The publicity machine is preparing to swing into action with billboards, posters and hopefully a local paper story or two.

Hairspray will be performed at the National Theatre in St Kilda. The Performance dates are:

THURSDAY April 21 at 7.30 pm FRIDAY April 22 at 7.30 pm SATURDAY April 23 at 2.00 pm and 7.30 pm

Please put those dates in your calendar now!! Tickets will go on sale at the beginning of March. Bookings will be through the National Theatre website. Details will be announced by the end of February.

We are currently preparing a booklet that will detail arrangements, times, drop off and pick up points for production week and other important information. It will be distributed at a cast/crew meeting in the last week of term. I would like to thank everyone who has been making an ongoing contributing to this production: staff, students and parents who support us by dropping off and picking up cast from rehearsals punctually. Your efforts are appreciated. Let’s stay focused for the next few weeks and keep steadily progressing towards the culmination of our efforts. Mr Bryan Smith Director Hairspray 2016

Parents dropping off and picking up their daughters outside the College on Jasper Road and Robert Street are asked to be mindful of how and where they park, including leaving the driveways of our surrounding residents clear. In the interests of the safety of all our girls, please do not stop in front of the crossing flag on Jasper Rd or across the main exit driveways in Robert Street. It is also important that all road rules and parking restrictions in the area are observed, including not making u-turns during school hours in Jasper Rd and Robert St.

Your assistance and cooperation is much appreciated.
