Welcome to the 2014 United Hospital Foundation Report to the Community. I am honored to write my first “Welcome Letter” as president of United Hospital Foundation.

I’ve been fortunate enough to spend the last 13 years working alongside Duke Adamski and the entire Foundation team. I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank Duke for all his hard work and dedication to building a strong Foundation. I am proud to continue to build on his legacy.

More important, I want to thank you, our donors, for everything you’ve done to make United Hospital what it is today. You are always at the center of everything we do. It is your generosity that allows us to be successful. Your heartfelt giving has made a difference in the lives of our patients and our community. You truly are partners in our mission and I am thankful for each one of you. I believe every donor, every gift matters in the lives of those we serve.

Looking back on 2014 fills me with pride. We celebrated our 30th year as a Foundation. We held record-breaking fundraising events, including the United Hospital Golf Classic – an exceptional amateur golf event – and our Service to Humanity Gala, which is still talked about as being a wonderfully enchanting evening for every guest.

Forecasting into 2015, the Foundation recognizes that we will continue to need you. We have been asked

to help raise money for The Mother Baby Center at United and Children’s - St. Paul. This renovation of our current Birth Center will provide mothers and families with the updated space they need, in addition to the high-level of care they expect. In 2015 we will be creating a Center of Excellence for internal medicine specialty care, bringing providers into an integrated model and creating one clinic vs. “condo” style clinics.

You can expect the return of our highly anticipated and donor-favorite events including the 25th annual United Hospital Golf Classic, the 3M Championship and, of course, the 31st annual Service to Humanity Gala.

Looking forward, the Foundation will assist the hospital in advancing its vision for patient care innovation and integration, while guiding our community through philanthropic leadership. On behalf of the entire Foundation team and United Hospital staff, thank you for everything you do to support our mission to enhance the health of United Hospital patients and the wellness of the community we serve.

Tony and Tom Bonfe


Bonfe’s Auto Service & Collision Repair: A business built on a strong family foundationWhen brothers Tom and Tony Bonfe took the wheel of Bonfe’s Auto Service & Collision Repair from their father, Roger, it was with a strong sense of family pride. What was started in 1951 by their grandfather, Sam, as a 10-stall mechanical shop, one employee and a strong focus on customer service, steadily grew over the years. Second generation owner Roger, Sam’s son, took over the business in 1972 and built on that strong focus of evolving and growing the business, believing in the philosophy, “If you sit still, you are getting behind.”

Since 1993, third generation owners and brothers, Tom and Tony, continue the family legacy of quality service and customer satisfaction. Bonfe’s Auto Service & Collision Repair now has 35 employees, 55 stalls and performs complete collision, painting, detailing, glass and automotive repairs. “We’re not in the business to fix cars, but to fix people,” said Tony, knowing how much car problems can affect lives. It’s that type of insight that helps keep this family owned and operated business growing.

Born and raised in St. Paul, Tony is proud of the “rock solid employees” at Bonfe’s. When a new employee is hired, it’s with the hope and intent that they stay for years. Tony said of their team, “It’s a true family business; everyone here is like family. We want them to stay until retirement.” Employees have been there for 15 years or longer.

Community involvement is an important part of Bonfe’s mission. They have supported United Hospital and the Foundation for many years. Located near United, they have gotten to know the staff who drop off cars for repairs and walk to work. “We feel like we’re in the loop as to what’s going on with United and feel a sense of connection,” said Tom.

Other ties to the United community are through Foundation board members and events. In addition to the Service to Humanity Gala, the United Hospital Golf Classic is a favorite — one at which employees look forward to volunteering every year.

While some may think it would be hard to work with family, the Bonfes would disagree. “Family is very important to us,” said Tom. “Tony and I are only a year and a half apart and we get along very well. We work together every day. We go to lunch together every day. We talk business all the time and we just deal with issues as they come up. We have never had a disagreement.” That tradition of having lunch together started with their grandfather, Sam. “He would take my dad for lunch every day. Then Dad started taking us. And just recently, we started taking Tony’s son, Brian, the fourth generation Bonfe to enter the business.”

The future of Bonfe’s looks bright. Tony said, “Cars are changing faster today than ever. Aluminum is coming out very fast and changing the way cars are manufactured. It used to be that they were 90 percent steel and very little aluminum. Just recently, the very first all-aluminum vehicle came out.” And while that is good for consumers (aluminum is actually a stronger metal, is light and provides improved gas mileage), it means a complete retooling of everything in order to work on the new material. Computers will continue to run everything in cars, making them more complex and expensive to fix, requiring new skill sets.

In an ever-evolving world, it’s reassuring to know that this family provides stability and expertise to United Hospital and the community we serve.

The Don Reioux Cardiac Rehabilitation and Family Center: The Heart of the Family


When a heart attack happens to one person, it has a profound effect on the whole family. Many lifestyle changes are needed for the patient and often for family members. Support and encouragement are important factors as well.

Don Reioux had his first heart attack in 1987. At that time, United Hospital was undergoing some major changes and reconfiguring its space. The need for a quiet, private space for family members to gather or confer with medical staff was apparent. From there, the Don Reioux Center began to take shape. Duke Adamski, past United Hospital Foundation president, worked very closely with Don and Pat Reioux,

meeting many times to make decisions and discuss plans for the Center. Duke was actively involved in building this center and deserves a great deal of credit for bringing it to fruition. The Medical Director of United Cardiac Rehabilitation, Dr. Margaret Beahrs, Don’s physician and trusted friend, was also involved in the design and planning of the facility.

At the time, Don was CEO of the J. L. Shiely Company, a mining company with operations in Denver, Colo., St. Cloud, Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn., where he was employed for 35 years. It was through an endowment from the Shiely family and fundraising by the United Hospital Foundation that the Cardiac Rehabilitation and Family Center was created.

At the ground-breaking event in 1998, Don was a speaker. The Center included a kitchen for cooking classes, a quiet room and a chapel. Heart attacks and heart surgery are life-changing events for the patients’ family, so everyone had an opportunity to learn how to deal with changes in diet and nutrition. Currently, the space includes a cardiac rehabilitation center where heart patients can exercise and are closely monitored while

recovering. In 1995, this space was increased to allow pulmonary patients to use it as well. While that meant removing the kitchen and chapel, this was a good and positive change.

Don was raised in Tower, Minn., and grew up spending much of his time hunting in the woods or fishing on Lake Vermillion. He had just turned 17 when he enlisted in the United States Army. He served with the Infantry and in some of the fiercest battles in the European theater. He was awarded two purple hearts, a bronze star with oak leaf cluster, and silver star with cluster. He never discussed his experiences or awards.

After his time in the army, Don attended the University of Minnesota where he received a BS in business. He then went on to graduate from William Mitchell College of Law with a JD. After that he earned an MBA from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota.

Don passed away in 1991. “He was everything to everybody” said wife, Pat. He was genuine, very kind, extremely intelligent, well read, a good listener and a good decision maker. “He could give you good advice and had a way of making you think it was your own idea,” said daughter, Karen. At some of the army reunions, he was frequently thanked by the men who had served under him, for the lives he had saved, but never talked about.

A wonderful family man, Don and Pat have two daughters: Karen, a registered nurse, and Susan, a teacher. Pat, a retired teacher, keeps busy being a mother and grandmother and enjoys many activities including painting and playing bridge. Don is missed every day by those who love him. His legacy lives on in the Don Reioux Cardiac Rehabilitation and Family Center.


Elaine S. Larson Surgical Center: A Strong Community AssetWhen the capital campaign began in 2011, the goal was to renovate the existing Surgery Department built during the 1970s. It was sorely in need of a refresh and technological update. With your donations, that goal was met. Gone forever are the small, crowded operating rooms. Instead, surgical suites and larger operating rooms were created allowing the surgical teams to better serve our patients with a state-of-the-art surgical center. We were excited to open the Elaine S. Larson Surgical Center on January 24, 2014.

In less than a year, we were able to see more patients due to the availability of the newly furnished surgical suites. More than 180 surgeons have combined to perform more than 5,000 surgeries totaling over 500,000 surgical minutes. “We are benefiting from the utilization of state of the art technology allowing for safer, more efficient care,” said Tyler Lindquist, director, Surgical Services.

Elaine S. Larson was a long time donor, friend and special person to United Hospital Foundation. Gracious and committed to her causes, she believed in giving back in a generous way and leading by example.

Construction is set to begin in March for The Mother Baby Center at United and Children’s - St. Paul and will take about 18 months to complete. Your generous donations made this project possible. Our staff and physicians have been patiently waiting for many years for this news and are excited to have an environment that matches the outstanding care provided to our patients.

A new treatment for cancerous and non-cancerous tumors is now available on the United Hospital campus. A generous gift from John Nasseff allowed the acquisition of the CyberKnife M6™ Series, which uses robotic precision to deliver high doses of radiation to tumors, while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. CyberKnife technology provides a superior patient experience as there are no incisions, anesthesia, hospitalization, and little or no recovery time. The Nasseff CyberKnife is the only CyberKnife M6 in the upper Midwest.

Specialists will begin treating patients with the Nasseff CyberKnife in March.

JULIE COHEN UNITED HOSPITAL VOLUNTEER AND NURSING EDUCATION FUNDThis fund will award scholarships to volunteers pursuing nursing degrees.

EDWARDS ENDOWMENT FUNDThis cataloged collection of nearly 28,000 human hearts and 100,000 photographic slides provides a unique learning and working opportunity for local, national and international physicians, which benefits every person with the potential for heart disease. The endowment fund keeps the registry here at United.

NASSEFF HEART CENTERThe Nasseff Heart Center offers comprehensive care from diagnosis to rehabilitation.

LIPSCHULTZ GUEST ROOMS ENDOWMENT FUNDThe rooms offer a place for families to stay when a loved one is hospitalized. This fund helps subsidize guests who can’t afford to pay for the service.

MEDICAL EDUCATION AND RESEARCH ENDOWMENT FUNDThis resource is funded entirely by physicians and provides grants for clinical research, educational opportunities and the purchase of ancillary equipment.

MILTON M. HURWITZ EXERCARE FITNESS CENTER FUNDThe Milton M. Hurwitz ExerCare Fitness Center provides medically safe and effective exercise and education programs to patients, their families and the community.

NASSEFF NEUROSCIENCE CENTERThe John Nasseff Neuroscience Institute offers comprehensive services, including a multi-disciplinary team for acute and long-term care, and serves as a research and education center to patients with neurologic disorders.
