• Set in England in the early 19th century, Pride and Prejudice tells the story of Mr and Mrs Bennet‘s five unmarried daughters after the rich and eligible (称心如意的) Mr Bingley and his friend, Mr Darcy, have moved into their neighbourhood. While Bingley takes an immediate liking to the eldest Bennet daughter, Jane. Darcy has difficulty adapting to local society and repeatedly clashes(冲突) with the second-eldest Bennet daughter, Elizabeth.

About the Novel

• Jane Austen (1775-1817) one of the best-loved English novelists. In each of Austern six novels, a woman meets and marries an eligible man after a series difficulties.

Jane Austen began writing novels in her early 20’s but did not publish them until late in life. She never married, and she lived happily in the rural, upper middle class society described in her books.

About the Author

Main Characters

Mr Darcy. He is a very rich and important person. But he really does not want to join in an entertainment that is for people of lower social rank, he refuses to dance with Elizabeth whom he thinks is not important enough or pretty enough for him. In doing this he shows his pride.

Main Characters

Elizebeth dislikes Mr Darcy immediately when she hears why he doesn’t want to dance with her. This dislike increases when she gets to know Mr Wickham who seems to have been badly treated by Darcy. Finally it becomes prejudice when she discovers that Darcy has tried to stop his friend from marrying Elizebeth’s sister, Jane. As a result Elizabeth shows her prejudice against Mr Darcy.

She thought it was Mr Darcy that seperated Elizabeth’s sister from Darcy’s friend.

“He is poor because of you. He is innocent yet you treat his hardships with extreme unkindness.”

She thought it was Mr Darcy that led to the hardship of Wickham.
